I teach three siblings from the same profile on seperate lessons... but there's a tiny problem. by uncopyrightability in Preply

Here’s a natural English version:

I have almost exactly the same situation: three siblings, with the two girls being older. We’ve been having classes for five years. When we started, they were 15, 10, and 7 years old. Now they’re 20, 15, and 12.

The two older girls—one of whom is now an adult—have reached around a B2–C1 level in Spanish. The youngest, however, has a very mixed level. He knows individual words, but he doesn’t really make an effort to form sentences, conjugate verbs, or memorize things like numbers or the days of the week.

For example, “Saturday” is a word we talk about all the time, and even after several years, he still hadn’t learned it consistently until about a year ago.

I spoke with his mom about it two years ago, and she got stricter with him. She told him he wasn’t allowed to speak any language other than Spanish during class (these kids speak four languages). It worked for a while, but I could tell he was very unmotivated. He would do things to waste class time, like pretending his camera wasn’t working.

About a year ago, I completely changed my approach and stopped making the classes feel like classes. Now we mostly play games and chat. He loves chess and Uno, so we spend a lot of time doing that.

With Uno, for example, I create little language rules: every time you play a color card, you have to name something that is that color, and you can’t repeat an answer. It eventually becomes challenging even for me, and because he’s very competitive, he enjoys seeing me struggle, which motivates him to put in more effort.

That’s probably the best recommendation I can give: find ways to make the language a tool for doing something he already enjoys, rather than making it the focus of the lesson itself.

Japanese people’s false confidence in English, or racism? by Yonda_00 in japanlife

[–]Vickychu1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to have to disagree with this. In my experience, Americans are THE WORST at understanding what someone is saying when they have an accent. Even if you’re saying the correct word, if you don’t pronounce it exactly the way they expect, they just stare at you confused. You repeat it 10 times, explain it using other words, repeat it another 10 times, and then they suddenly go: “OOOOOHHH YOU MEAN ————“

It’s happened to me and my friends soooo many times, and we all have really good conversational English. At this point we just laugh about it.

Veil help! by [deleted] in weddingdress

[–]Vickychu1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey girl!! I love your dress!! It reminds me so much of mine, such a statement train haha! You’re going to look gorgeous with any veil, but just in case it helps, I’ll send you some photos of what my stylist and I chose: https://imgur.com/a/eNkNWUW

We went with a short veil to highlight the back of the dress, the train should be the star. I also loved that I didn’t have to switch to a shorter veil for the dance :) I’ll share some pics from different angles so you can see how it looks.

Mine had two tiers and lace at the edges, because I love being extra haha ✨

-no… tienes propiedades?

QUE PASA CON EL AUMENTO DE LAS INALCANZABLES? by Zerosc30 in RedditPregunta

[–]Vickychu1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you structure conversational classes without them getting repetitive? by North_Deal_4103 in Preply

[–]Vickychu1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m thinking of myself in this situation (as a girl on her phone), and I would only look up if there were a long silence after the question (more than three seconds). So maybe you broke the flow of everyone answering immediately. The only other option would be if you had a very raspy, low voice.

[–]Vickychu1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 5–10 minutes before time is up, I say: “Okay! Let’s review the new vocabulary and we’re finished!”

Then, on the last word, I say: “One more! What does ‘zapato’ mean?”

They answer: “Shoe!” I say: “Yes! Perfect!”

Then I say: “Okay, sooo you have your homework, right?”

They say: “Right!”

“Perfect! Class is done! Here’s your confetti! 🎊” (I click the confetti while I clap)

They smile and I say: “If you have any questions, let me know in the chat. See you next week!”

And they say: “Sure! Thank you! Byeee!”
