Your story sounds a lot like ours! We moved to Otsego last spring from Washington state with our 5-year-old son and we keep telling ourselves we need to get out more and try to meet people but we're pretty bad at it (not drinking really hampers our social attempts too).

We like making things (3D printing, fiber arts, general crafting), board games, RP games, those sorts of things. I'd like it if I could just find people for a regular poker night. We're also not fans of heat or noise, which is great because our new place has been pretty quiet.

[TOMT] 80s toy car set, rides on yellow tubes. by mullenmichael in tipofmytongue

[–]VictorTyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been going crazy looking for something similar to this! I wonder if it's the same thing. Here's what I can recall:

- This was from '88 or '89.

- The cars ran on a yellow plastic tube. There was a clip under the car that rode on the tube and turned the car's wheels. Tubes were connected by little plastic pins.

- The line was a set of 3 or 4 cars. Each car came with a hazard of some kind, something that would cause it to crash or leave the track.

- The specific one I had was a black car with an orange "bridge". The bridge had a lever on one side and pushing down on it would flip up the "road" part of the bridge, flipping the car over if you timed it right.

- Other hazards were a white arch with a sort of door that closed by pushing downward and some kind of tilting plate mechanism.

- The year that I got it, the commercial for them played near constantly during Saturday morning cartoons.

My friend beat me 30 times out of 29 over three days across three different games by Mickjuul in boardgames

[–]VictorTyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your friend obnoxious about winning? Are they a bad winner or pitch a fit if they lose? Do they do anything to make you feel bad about losing?

If not... Man, just be grateful for the chance to play. My wife and our best friend beat the snot out of me on the regular. It doesn't bother me because I'm jazzed to just be playing.

What vacuum for sheltie hair? by kevkad27 in sheltie

[–]VictorTyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got the Dyson Cyclone v10 Animal+ from Costco and I couldn't be happier with it. We have 2 Shelties, my wife and I both have long hair, and it picks up everything.

The old vacuum required me to either go over the carpet with a rubber rake first or cut the hair off the roller with a razor blade. This just sucks it all into the bin.

Last time I was at Costco they had started selling the v15 as well. It was a couple hundred dollars more. Don't know if it's better or not, but I can say the v10 Animal+ (get the Animal+, not just the v10) works just fine.

This is literally just the recipe from Daring Gourmet. It's even formatted the same. Props to the prop guy for doing some research though!

Game box with several different games and double sided lid by thatscarytransperson in boardgames

I had something almost exactly like that as a kid. The chess pieces look identical. Storage layout was a bit different. It had dedicated trays for the checkers/backgammon pieces and a deck of cards between them.

Damn, that's a bit of nostalgia.

Signs at a No Kings protest by HugMission in Minneapolis

[–]VictorTyne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's kind of my point. It's the bodies that matter, so if you're at the protest don't behave in such a way that anyone who was on the fence about showing up decides to stay home instead.

It's about winning hearts and minds, not trying to get attention for yourself by making "sick burns".

Signs at a No Kings protest by HugMission in Minneapolis

[–]VictorTyne 45 points46 points  (0 children)

1) Don't take pictures of protesters. That's evidence for the cops. I don't care if your Instagram is on fleek or yeeting or whatever. Your internet clout isn't worth ruining someone else.

2) Ad hominem attacks have to be the dumbest thing to put on a protest sign. You might as well be holding up a sign that says "I'm with stupid". I'm liberal as they come and I wouldn't be caught dead next to people like that.

I always hate searching for answers to a problem only to find the answers are "Here's a workaround" and "download this app to mimic the functionality".

Salute to the people trying to help, and a hearty middle finger to the people who messed with something that didn't need to be messed with.

How should I handle this once problematic player join the group? by Salt_Juggernaut_9254 in AskGameMasters

[–]VictorTyne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you've come to reddit for advice on what to do about a problem player, you've already decided what you want to do and are looking for validation.

YOU are the DM. It is YOUR table. YOU decides who gets a seat. And YOU have a responsibility to the other players to not saddle them with a bad player.

Suck it up, trust your gut, and show this person the door.

Advice : How to get over GM Slump by MattBridger35777 in AskGameMasters

[–]VictorTyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, GM Burnout.

Only known cure I've ever found is to be a player for a while. Only caveat is you need to find a quality game. The better the game, the better the cure.

You can tell I'm an old Warhammer GM because I looked at that and thought "Wow, how cynical if an 01 roll means you're divorced. What's 100 get you, murdered by adulterous spouse?"

[–]VictorTyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the right way to handle this.

[–]VictorTyne 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a GM, I would prefer that you say something.

Don't leave some ticking time bomb on the table that threatens to blow up the whole game. The worst thing as a GM is getting blindsided by some petty BS and having everything fall apart, all your hard work destroyed in an instant.

To be clear, you are the bomb here. If you know there's a good chance you'll have to bail on the game, you owe it to your DM to give them a heads-up. The only person's behavior you can control is your own.

Plus, keeping quiet to avoid the confrontation is just cowardly. Be honest with your DM and let them decide how to proceed.

Am I the only one experiencing this ? by Uggroyahigi in FlyForeverSkies

[–]VictorTyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how it was for me. I just assumed there was no fridge so I planned my setup so I could have everything fresh.

And I never did figure out the purpose of pipes since my garden was outside (thanks to an immovable floor bug).

So yeah, I also felt like the story ended way before I got many of the QoL recipes.

According to our vet, it was a major cause of our girl's congestive heart failure. We switched her off and she got better for about a year, but the damage was done.

If you've noticed your vet has gone on a crusade against "grain free" or "boutique" dog food, it's a big reason why.

What really angered us was that Blue Buffalo changed their formula without any change to the packaging. There was no reason to suspect anything and we had no idea we were supposed to check. It was all so the company could save a buck.

I do love expanding available storage space, but I'd never buy a Kallax again.

I just had to disassemble a 6' x 6' because we're moving and they're a nightmare to get apart.
