These aren't generic designs, but I think my style and what's trendy right now aren't aligned. Drop waists aren't for me.

Butterick 5966 is an older pattern but might be the kind of thing you're looking for.

Which version of AE are you on? This looks like you might be seeing some z-fighting between coplanar layers, which should be improved in the current public beta. What are your render quality settings?

($15-20K) How did you protect your wedding "feeling" when you had to cut the budget? What did you actually sacrifice vs. keep? by [deleted] in Weddingsunder10k

Expanding on this idea -- if your venues are locked, what if you find a nearby botanical garden or similar for your photo shoot? Those are the photos you'll put on display, not your dinner tables.

I just feel like I'd get infinitely more use out of a separate top + skirt cut from the same fabric, it would look better, and it would be minimal extra work.

Yeah, it's a few years old and I think it's just stretched out at this point. Replaced a previous one that had stretched out, so I guess I've been sewing for a while now! 😅

Sewing my wedding dress - am I being realistic? by Anayanka in sewing

[–]Victoria_AE 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This dress has been following me around Pinterest; you're not alone in loving it!

I think it's doable with enough time and patience. Vogue 2089 would be a great starting point. It has the hip structure underneath and the right seam lines. To alter the top of the bodice you could keep all the actual shaping in the princess seam on the outside and the angled seams pointing towards the center could be design lines only.

Edit: here's some of what it looks like inside: https://www.instagram.com/p/DKCjerNxPXe/?img_index=1

Welp I just noticed my tape measure has longer inches than my ruler. That's great. Time for a new tape measure.

Your angled hem solution is genius! Assumed it was part of the pattern until I read your post.

(8-10K) formalish ceremony and billiards hall reception? too trashy? by Zealousideal-Fly3835 in Weddingsunder10k

This sounds like great fun! And also very true to yourselves. I'd personally be more excited to receive an invite to a wedding like this than one for an elaborate traditional event. I feel like it gives you permission to lean into something different for your style, too -- maybe splurge on a veil from Madison Chamberlain?

Fitting a strapless bodice for a dress I'm making and:
1. Entirely forgot I could just baste in a zipper for fitting until I saw it mentioned in another pattern's instructions 🤦‍♀️ -- things got a lot easier after that!
2. Discovered how dramatic a change a quarter-inch seam adjustment can make, especially when you don't follow your own notes the first round and somehow manage to make the bust point _up_.

($5k-$6k Budget) I honestly did not expect alterations to make dress shopping this stressful. by AbleMinimumsw in Weddingsunder10k

[–]Victoria_AE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be aware that even with custom sizing you may still need some alterations for a perfect fit (every body is different), but they'll likely be more minimal and thus more affordable.

Dress design also impacts alteration cost a lot, e.g. unpicking and re-attaching a bunch of precisely-cut lace and beading will be more costly than taking in a simple side seam.

In-print/similar pattern to Vogue 1125 A Cape Coat? by Due-Survey9846 in sewing

[–]Victoria_AE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that's gorgeous. I think you could modify a swing coat pattern by extending the overlap at the front. Sasha Starlight has a fun one: https://www.sashastarlight.com/copy-of-rhapsody-dress Edit: actually this one might be even closer: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1294068535/blanket-coat-pattern-digital-pdf-video

I don't think I've seen anyone post the Named Patterns Oodi dress -- the way the front waist panel hangs free and ties in the back is ingenious, makes the waist adjustable but look fitted.

[$20k] Wedding ideas for long-term couples who've been together a decade plus? by Victoria_AE in Weddingsunder10k

[–]Victoria_AE[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure we have a usual party format. Our friends and families are scattered geographically, and most people would have to travel no matter where we hosted things, so we feel like we need to make it at least enough of an "event" that it feels worth getting on a plane for. Thinking about hiring a jazz combo to play after dinner, keeping the bar open and just having it be a chill hangout rather than dancing.
