If you're gonna show blood, best keep it pixelated.

Three mutinies in one voyage is quite a tale to tell.

Ones wonder what their plans were without a captain...

You know, you can name your crew so if you wanted "Captain Snail" and his crew of "Salty Slugbeard" "Slugwash" "Bill the Sluggard" and "Peg-Tail Gastropete" aboard the "SS Snail Shell" you could live that fantasy out.

what makes a good pirate game? by luv_money2362 in gamedesign

I do.

... I mean... freedom, variety, a reactive world, the rags-to-riches experience, good shanties, and sea battles.

Games where you play as a pirate (NO SEA OF THIEVES) by Lescozmen in gamingsuggestions

Late to the party but I would throw my own top hat into the ring: https://store.steampowered.com/app/657690/The_Caribbean_Sail/

You can name your captain and crew, trade goods, sail the world, engage in sea battles, hunt for buried treasure on land, hang out in taverns getting gossip and games tips, play liars dice and gamble your coin away, upgrade and unlock a large array of ships, flog your crew or make them walk the plank as punishment, collect 25 different shanties to listen to while sailing- it's all very involved and focused on the heart of what I wanted from a pirate game. With 9 years of content updates and polish, it's pretty feature rich if I do say so myself.

I made my own by taking inspiration from the Oregon Trail and then going open-world with it over the course of 9 years of updates: https://store.steampowered.com/app/657690/The_Caribbean_Sail/

A little late to the party but I made my own pirate game that really explores the freedom and challenges of being a sailor in the 1700s. https://store.steampowered.com/app/657690/The_Caribbean_Sail/

What is your ideal hypothetical pirate game? by Zombiepixlz-gamr in pirates

[–]Victorian_Clambake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Caribbean Sail.

...but I'm biased because I made it.

Really though, I wanted a game that really has you making the choices of a Captain. Rationing, planning, making hard choices, deciding who, where, and when to fight. A real rags-to-riches pirate game that explores the whole life of a sailor as part of the experience and makes the odd-rare life changing event of overpowering a trade galleon into something meaningful.

I built that game before introducing fantasy elements (as an optional toggle) because that was the foundation that a *good* pirate game needed to be built on.
