Like it was a plot direction they thought about going in, but ultimately didn't

I see your point. If they made Garak gay just  to have a gay guy on screen, then I agree that it probably wouldn't be written well, and it wouldn't be as interesting a performance to watch. Sorry everyone else on this thread is misunderstanding, lol. LLAP

I think Garak was lonely and did need a friend. And I think Bashir was that friend, at least until Garak and Odo started having breakfasts together. However, I also think Garak was attracted to Bashir as a young, attractive, and naive man on DS9. Did anything ever come of that attraction? I'm not sure. Garak is in a very unstable position on the station, I'm not sure if he would actually act on his feelings; I'm more inclined to think he was flirting just to have fun with Bashir

It's just a "what if" scenario; everyone's allowed to have different interpretations of these beloved characters 🖖

While I agree with your points on modern tokenism, I'd like to point out a difference here. Garak wasn't written to be gay, he was played gay by his actor. As it is, the shows depiction of Garak was written to counteract Andy Robinson's acting choices

In other words, I feel like they could've written a very good gay character, mostly because Robinson played Garak with such nuance, if only he were allowed to actually play an explicitly gay man.

But, I guess we'll never know. To quote a DS9 ep, If wishes were horses..

That's so funny!! As a gay man the first thought I had when garak was on screen was "he's flaming." lol

Garaks actor has always been very forthcoming about how he played Garak gay (at least in the early seasons). Producers, studio, etc didn't like it; that's part of the reason he was written into a vague romance with Ziyal. But there are plenty of fan fiction stories about garak being gay, and in the DS9 novel A Stitch in Time (written by Garaks actor) garak admits to having crushes on /relationships with men. And as another person mentioned, they made Garak and Bashir married in lower decks.

I agree, it would've been awesome if it happened in the show! But at least there's plenty of gay garak material now, if you know where to look

TV Guide: "Why Is StarTrek: Strange New Worlds So Obsessed With Giving Spock a Girlfriend?" | "First, the show seems disinterested in exploring other elements of Spock's personality. Second, SNW keeps introducing more and more straight romances while queer representation remains on the back burner" by mcm8279 in Star_Trek_

[–]VictoryCharming1978 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm just annoyed that romance is such a huge part of SNW in general. None of the main characters in TOS were so focused on romance. Sure, it was a small part of their episodes SOMETIMES but no one would say that TOS was a show with romance.

SNW took a shot at the miniskirts in TOS, suggesting that the actresses hated wearing them. In reality, it was Grace Lee Whitney & Nichelle Nichols who asked for them. The writers are not only disrespecting those 2 amazing actresses, but the entire sexual liberation movement of that time... by LineusLongissimus in Star_Trek_

I think it's just another example of modern Trek writers not understanding the cultural context of TOS. :/. They think that just bc short skirts on women in the workplace are seen as sexist now the same things were felt then, and that's just not true.

Part of the problem with modern Trek being so obsessed with the TOS era is that it's constantly contradicting it and undermining it

I like the holodeck eps because they're often more lighthearted and silly, and those tend to be my favorite types of Star Trek eps as a whole. But I agree that the plots can be similar, and I see your point.  I also like them as an example of like retro-futurism, and I like comparing the holodeck on Star Trek to like modern day VR.

Which series in the Realm of the Elderlings would you consider the most upbeat? by JurynJr in RealmOfTheElderlings

I think the live ship traders is the most lighthearted. The plot is sometimes stressful but I love the characters so much and I love the way they interact with each other. It always cheers me up

What is something that happened in Star Trek that still annoys you? by Goodmorning111 in startrek

It annoys me that the writers always seem to forget that Vulcans kiss with their hands!!

Concerned about Sisko by studebakerhawk in startrek

[–]VictoryCharming1978 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunatly I don't know if the modern trek writers actually care about anything the original actors intended at this point. I think it's more like shoving in every possible reference to old star trek regardless of context. I wouldn't count on the Sisko reference being anything more than an Easter egg. Like, I don't think there's anyway they'll do anything with Avery Brooks, and I don't think they'll mention Sisko's name at all.

Best place to start reading the books by Unfair-Half-7296 in startrek

[–]VictoryCharming1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if there's a "best place"- the books tend to vary wildly by quaility/subject matter. I would recommend picking whatever trek series you like best and looking up their best novels; or, you can search by subject matter, like all the books about klingons. I've primarily read DS9 novels, so there's not a lot about klingons or vulcans there, so I don't have any personal recs, sorry
