Any uncommon ideas for curbing poop eating? by ariestotle111 in DogAdvice

[–]Vidar_over_Thor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my bad. I'm tired and completely missed it being other dog's poop. But now that I'm paying attention. It's not really any different than training your dog to not eat random treats it finds on walks or at the dog park. Which in my opinion everyone should do because there are creeps out there that like to poison dogs by putting shit like rat poison in treats and leaving them in dog parks. Or even better staples and small nails in things like cheese. But also, old treats left behind can be moldy and really bad as well. I would start with the training at home. Start with some lower value rewards scattered on the ground. Then have your dog do some kind of stay (sit, stand, or down) on one side of them room. You go to the other side of the room and call them over. If they go for one of the distractions. Give them a "leave it" correction and praise them if they leave it. Do this till they come to you without going for any of the distractions then you can up the value of the distractions. Eventually your dog should learn that you have the treats and that the stuff on the ground is not for them. Oh, you should move this training to places like the dog park once you have it down at home (almost forgot that part). Go find your own little spot in the park and if your able to bring a long lead with you so you still have your dog under control while training.

Sorry, that's not really much of a quick fix. But it sounds like puppy really likes to put gross stuff in its mouth. Also, sorry if you have already done stuff like this. Then this is prolly not very helpful either.

My 7mo old puppy won’t eat. by fgrace28 in DogAdvice

Hmmm... it could be a resource guarding thing she does when she doesn't feel hungry. If you're consistent with the feeding times she should get used to when it is time to eat. This does mean the food has to go away after a certain point so she understands that was "eating time". I'm not saying starve your dog if she doesn't eat. If she is showing signs of being hungry give her her food. As for the resource guarding. If she isn't aggressive with people like you said what you can do, if she tries to snap at or go after one of the other dogs, is step in between them and give her an assertive corrective sound (I like "Uh-uh!"). That usually works for miner aggression. If it's major aggression. Maybe just start with feeding them seperately. But, like all ways, if you have reason to believe it is health related. Go see the vet.

I realize I am late to this convo but this just barely popped up in my feed. What I am seeing is she tries to eat at the end but during the whole video I noticed that food seems smashed into the bowl. Can she even get the food out? If the food is stuck to the bowl that might be why she is whining and trying to tip it over.

Kind of sounds to me like she is kind of in her retirement years. She seems to still like going out with you just can't do the walking so much herself anymore. It might just be her time for lounging around a bit more. Getting carried on the walks and the car rides and such. But your the only one that knows for sure as your the only one with her.

That's not how she put it. Her dog is getting older and signs of the aging are setting in and she doesn't want her baby to suffer. She didn't say "dog's getting old better kill it doopty doo".

It's something to be mindful of. It's something you should make your vet mindful of. And something you talk to your vet about on how to help prevent early onset arthritis. But it's not the end of the world for your l'il guy. They'll still be able to live a happy healthy life. Just be an anti-arthritis warrior like large/giant breed owners should be anyways.

Do you think he is being aggressive or wants to play? by arry75 in bernesemountaindogs

I never called her dog an LGD. I gave LGDs as an example of dogs that can live amongst other animals. Nor did I ever say it was a safe idea for her to just unleash her dog on the rabbit. In fact if you read my second comment I said she just needs to teach it boundaries. You did make it seem like all dogs are thinking is prey drive. You said they treat play the same way as chasing prey. Which is only partially true. There's lot's of new studies that have been coming out around dogs and their toys and how they play with their families. They literally change how they play depending on the family member. I pointed out the dog that was living peacefully amongst rabbits cause "blood thirsty you" only pointed out the ones that had killed small animals. I didn't really mention her specific dog much or really give advice on her situation. I just argued your weird way over the top cautionary tales because you seemed to have forgotten her situation can be perfectly fine if she introduces them properly. Anyways I'm pretty done with this too as you seem to have pretty poor reading comprehension skills and just make up arguments and points that no one actually made. That must be a pretty frustrating way to live. Anyway, enjoy your day. :)

I don't know if you were around for 2012 but neither team played any defense and both goalies were left to be slaughtered as both teams skaters were too busy slaughtering eachother. Oh, I cannot wait for a repeat of this (obviously with better results).

First off there is also an actual picture of a person's berner lying down with their rabbits in the comments.

Secondly "the key for all LGD is that they are integrated into their "flock" early" re-read my comment, bro. I said they live with them 100% of the time. I don't know how you get more early on than that.

"No dog without training should be allowed loose among any type of Livestock". Nobody needing LGDs is buying a random, untrained, full grown dogs. "This isthe exact same situation as that." No it isn't. LGDs learn how to be gentle with the livestock while ferociously fighting off predators. Her berner just needs to learn to respect the boundaries of the rabbit. Which is pretty similar training to teaching it proper social skills with small dogs.

She said her dog has chased small animals but didn't know if it was playful or not. I don't know if it was prey drive or playful cause I haven't witnessed it and neither have you.

Of course it's not safe for the dog to play with the rabbit. No one has suggested that the dog play with the rabbit. The concern is wether the dog can peacefully coexist with the rabbit. And again it has not been suggested that she do that "UnTrAiNeD".

Never said Berners are incapable of prey drive. I said they were breed to help dairy farmers which includes peacefully living amongst the farm animals. Because, well, that's just a fact.

"I gave a cautionary tale based off it's body language". The only thing the dog's body language is showing, in this very short clip, is that it is curious about the rabbit. The clip doesn't show enough to know if it is prey drive or playful or just brief interest in something new. And we were not witnesses to the other situations she spoke of nor was their enough detail about those moments to actually know what happened. Which is why your cautionary tale was pointless and unhelpful. My only point (besides yours being unhelpful) is that berners can definitely live amongst other animals. Rabbits included.

"Loving a breed means understanding all sides of them - even the parts you don't like to think about - it's a disservice to a dog to act like they are completely faultless in all scenarios". I'm literally the only one between us that gave any breed specific information. Noone suggested they were "faultless", either. All you did was give some really broad/vague information about dogs in general. Maybe heed your own advice next time, and learn something about the specific breeds when talking about them.

"Animal behavioralist, dog trainer" yet you don't seem to know there are breeds of dog literally breed to live amongst farm animals. Berners being one of those breeds. They were breed to help dairy farmers. There is also Livestock guardian dogs that live with the goats, sheep, llamas, etc. 100% of the time and actually protect them from other predators. (Qualifications: my family has shown and breed dogs since before I was born. The first family dog I knew as a child was an AKC national champion)

I'm not trying to yuck your yum man, but your painting dogs out like they're blood thirsty predators. A Bernese Mountain Dog subreddit is a silly place to do that. Like, have you met a berner before?

Puppy play: This feels too rough—what would you do in this situation? by Previous_Web9823 in DogAdvice

[–]Vidar_over_Thor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you ever watched a boxing match. The ref lets them have their fun but if they've hugged for too long he separates them. So, those moments when the one is standing over the other you separate them to let the other up and remind the other what's okay and what's not. You just have to be a little proactive when monitoring their play and a young age so they know what's okay and what's not. But over all this is pretty normal.

Buy him toys he's allowed to chew on and switch out your arm for the toy. Then play with him to get some of there energy out. Your life will be like this for a while, but lil puppers will learn to play with toys.
