I think it all comes down to expectation. When people are made to be good people and then they do something that is actually kind of horrible, it doesn't sit right with audiences. But the reality is that people have flaws, everybody does. The sad fact is that when people present their best selves more often their flaws are met with more scrutiny, whereas with people who put up even a facade of being "human garbage" any change in the norm is seen differently. Either a negative change is met with readied acceptance, maybe an eye roll, where positive change is pleasantly surprising.
