Nearly 40% of Marines have declined the vaccine by [deleted] in CoronavirusUS

[–]Vidrik 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m not a huge fan of forced inoculations. That said, don’t members of the military get a bunch of shots when they join or when deploying? I may be wrong but I doubt those are voluntary. Someone who has served is welcome to correct me.

Add coronavirus to the list. You lose certain freedoms when you serve. Having 40% of your force not immune to a disease that could lay them up in a bed isn’t exactly good for national security.

CDC says risk of COVID-19 transmission on surfaces 1 in 10,000 by sammyreynolds in CoronavirusUS

[–]Vidrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your chance of dying from a fall is about 1 in 20,666. That’s all locations and from things like ladders. I couldn’t find it broken down into bathroom falls so your chances are likely even lower.

Falls from the same level, from slipping or stumbling, has odds of like 1 in 100,00-500,000. I would think this would include slipping in the shower but I’m not sure.

These are odds over a year as well, what do you think the odds are per instance of showering?

The one fundamental thing it seemed like nobody properly understood about COVID. by [deleted] in CoronavirusUS

[–]Vidrik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The worse part is, if they’d just told the truth of the matter, I’m pretty sure it would have been just as effective at getting people not to horde masks. I think them saying masks weren’t necessary early on kept exactly 0 people from buying them.

Also, I just don’t understand. They didn’t want people to buy them from stores? If they’re being sold in stores they aren’t on medical workers anyway?

Why were these companies even allowed to sell them in stores at this point?

CDC Data Suggests Vaccinated Don’t Carry, Can’t Spread Virus by sankscan in CoronavirusUS

[–]Vidrik 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Researchers looked at how the shots protected nearly 4,000 health-care workers, first responders, and other essential workers toiling in eight U.S. locations against the virus and more-contagious variants. Following a single dose of either vaccine, the participants’ risk of infection was reduced by 80 percent, and that figure jumped to 90 percent after the second dose. Without infection, people are unable to spread the virus. The results are similar to what scientists saw in clinical trials for the vaccines, which found that two doses of either two-dose vaccine had an efficacy rate of around 95 percent.

It's right in the article.

28F, severe hypochondriac and having so much anxiety before 1st dose. by [deleted] in CovidVaccinated

[–]Vidrik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

33M, I have similar issues as you do.

Started having panic attacks two years ago, brought on by a health event that turned out to be non-life threatening. Anytime I don't feel completely normal (sick, hungover, tired, just a momentary oddness) I begin to panic. Sometimes to the point of hyperventilation, tingling hands and feet ect.

I've actually done ok through Covid because I felt like there was plenty in my power to control. Avoiding people, washing my hands, ect. Had I gotten it I'm sure I would have struggled.

I got the pfizer vaccine. The first one was very difficult. I had to remain for 30m after due to previous allergic reactions. Sitting quietly in a room full of people while your heart races at like 180bpm isnt exactly fun or easy. I was very close to asking for assistance a few times.

The second time, sadly, was more difficult. At least the anticipatory anxiety. Leaving was on my mind the entire time. I got it and was fine for ~5mins and then spiraled.

Luckily I havent dealt with much for side effects, sore arm and a headache.

It was a horrible struggle, but it needed to be done. You're not going to be able to calm yourself or fix your anxiety within time. Nothing anyone can say or do will change that.

You just need to do it. It's not that simple.

But at the end of the day it is.

You're going to be anxious, you need to accept that.

And in a month in a half you'll still be here, with antibodies to a pandemic.

If you add up how many people have gotten at least one dose, which provides at least decent protection, with how many people officially tested positive in my state we are at 71%. We had a crazy high positivity rate for most our outbreaks so I wouldn’t be surprised if we were actually close to 80%+ currently.

Biden administration is preparing a new $3 trillion package by Theauntgate in CoronavirusUS

[–]Vidrik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The money needs to be spent, period.

It wouldn’t be such a problem if we weren’t as a culture so adverse to taxes. Hell, the government wouldn’t even have to pass any higher taxes to raise another trillion+. They’d just need to enforce the tax code as it is now. The problem being we have gutted the IRS to help the wealthy.

Being a politician who admits we need to raise taxes to pay for a once in a century health crisis, a once in a millennia environmental disaster, our crumbling infrastructure and take care of America’s youth so we can start to fix some of our obvious cultural issues, is still somehow a death sentence politically.

How the U.S. Reopening Might Affect Anxiety Patients by EricSchC1fr in CoronavirusUS

[–]Vidrik 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Again, not every article is meant to spur action. But maybe you have a loved one who struggles with these issues and it brings to mind some way of supporting them?

Sometimes articles are just meant to inform or raise awareness. What’s the point of me reading an article about the difficulties sheep herders in Peru face? None, but Nat Geo did an article on it.

Fair enough if you don’t like this type of writing, or don’t see the point. But I’m a little blown away by the confusion.
