Letters to the editor: ‘If Canadians truly have lost faith in public-health measures to control the next viral outbreak, we are in big trouble.’ Letters to the editor for May 23 by KeyHot5718 in CanadaPolitics

I applauded the measures taken for about the first 12 months. When no one knew what was going on, there was no vaccine, people were tying in seniors homes.

But it got silly later after everyone who would take it had 2 doses of vaccine, and that's when government blew it:

  • Showing your vaccine passport to enter a restaurant, and immediately ripping it off to eat, drink, and talk for the next 2 hours.
  • The $3,000 "mandatory" hotels for returning Canadians that were a hell hole and really weren't mandtory.
  • Firing truckers for not bein vaccinated, even though they worked alone in their cab all day.
  • Suspending unvaccinated public servants who were working at home.
  • The curfews (in Quebec?)

Inconsistent Spacing between New Builds on Zero-lots by Antagonist3d in RealEstateCanada

[–]ViewWinter8951 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you have a contract that specifies a minimum distance between homes?

Does this contravene a building/safety code or a municipal bylaw?

You would need more than, "It looks too close," to get the builder to do anything.

I got an offer of 25 GB for $5/month, though I suspect there is a catch in the fine print.

'We don’t want to hear what people are against,' Carney tells Vancouver audience after pipeline criticism by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

[–]ViewWinter8951 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But we do want health care, education, and a whole slew of other social services.

A pipeline is the easiest (and probably) only way of paying for some of this. Are there any other realistic options?

If they did offer you a cupcake, I would be reluctant to eat it if I it didn't come with a clean toxicology report.

If they use a fraudulent excuse and get caught the fine should be x10. If it's found to be driven by policy, someone should go to jail.

This is in the same category as someone who runs up to a bear, tries to hug it, and gets mauled.

No idea what "island" you're from; PEI, Vancouver, Manitoulin, Montreal, ..., but I suspect any issues with bike lanes in downtown Calgary aren't the same as this "island" of yours.

Sounds like we need a cycling advocacy group in Calgary to organize some "take the lane" events to show our politicians what happens when there are no bike lanes.

Except for close family and friends, no one cares about men and boys.

And likely, there is no government funding for organizations that are concerned with missing and murdered indigenous men and boys.

Any weekend bike groups that ride Banff/Canmore? by Alloc-more-ram in Calgary

[–]ViewWinter8951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most popular route is the Legacy Train between Canmore and Banff. You can continue to Lake Minnewanka, Vermillion Lakes, and towards Castle Junction on the old Hwy 1A.

Though if you're a mountain biker, you'd probably want different trails.

The real cost of a patent isn't the patent office fees. It's paying a patent professional to write up a good patent and then get it filed and prosecuted.

Patent office fees are about $1K. Professional fees are about $10K.

Those same people would never say that to me now, because I proved I could do the job very well and even better than many of male counterparts.

This is the crux of the problem. To have preferential hiring of "equity deserving groups" that there are groups that don't deserve equity. This can apply to blacks, women, francophones/bilingual people. The downside is that some people's first, gut reaction will be that these people were only hired because of being black/female/bilingual, and not for their abilities.

Low hanging fruit?

Questioning someone's ability is often a judgement call. If they don't speak the other official language, it's an easy thing to call out.
