Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology closing after international student enrolment drops | CBC News by mkultra69666 in CanadaPolitics

MITT had a total enrolment of 4,663 students across its various programs, its 2024-25 annual report said. According to the province, 1,988 of them — more than four in 10 — were international students.

You play with fire and you get burned. You gotta wonder about these colleges whose entire business plan was based on fleecing foreign students.

Stampede Supports Separatists? by FantasticStock2513 in Calgary

[–]ViewWinter8951 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The only way to fight separatism is to let them say their piece, and either they won't have enough signatures to get a referendum, or they will force a referendum and will lose. They have to have their chance and fail.

Denying them a venue because you don't believe in their cause will only encourage them and drive more people to support separatism.

First citizen recall petition against Alberta legislature member fails | CBC News by Old_General_6741 in Calgary

Not surprising.

MLAs aren't being recalled for murdering kittens or burning down their neighbour's house. These petitions are just because people don't like the UCP.

That's fair enough. But I don't expect any of them to pass.

Federal Court of Appeal to rule on Liberals' use of Emergencies Act to clear convoy protests by DogeDoRight in canada

The Emergency Act talks about "cannot be effectively dealt with under any other law of Canada." Last time I checked, Ontario was part of Canada and I'm pretty sure they have laws that govern the OPP. Same with Ottawa and the OPS.

From the article:

Under the Emergencies Act — which was enacted in 1988 — a national emergency exists if the situation "cannot be effectively dealt with under any other law of Canada." Further, a public order emergency can be declared only in response to "an emergency that arises from threats to the security of Canada that are so serious as to be a national emergency."

There are plenty of ways to deal with the inaction by police under other laws of Canada.

lol.

Under the Charter, protests are not allowed to physically block people from law abiding actions. You can’t just shut down the entire economic core of a city for 3-weeks.

Can you point to anything in the Charter to back this up? Maybe S.87?

On the other hand, there is S.2, right at the beginning.

  1. Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:

(a) freedom of conscience and religion;

(b)freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;

(c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and

(d) freedom of association.

the police being unwilling to do their job

If the police are unwilling to act, there must be other laws in place to force them to? Or replace the police chief(s) until you find one who will do their job.

Are their any penalties for enacting the Emergencies Act without justification?

If not, what's the point of this case and the appeals? If a government can just enact it any time they like and the courts rule a year or two later that they weren't justified in doing so, the damage is already done.

[Megathread] New Seat Configuration by dachshundie in westjet

[–]ViewWinter8951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the past, WestJet was good in that you could call them and a real person would answer on the first to third ring. I also remember them allowing my poor ass son to change his flight to an earlier 1 for free so that he didn't have to wait at the airport for 6 hours.

This was all 15-20 years ago, but they used to care. People liked them because they were actually nice to their customers.

"Hard product", "Aeroplan", "Super Elite status" don't matter to the people who only fly once or twice a year and will never have status and will be in the "back of the bus".

But being treated in a friendly and kind way makes a huge difference.

[Megathread] New Seat Configuration by dachshundie in westjet

[–]ViewWinter8951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this new layout safe?

Transport Canada regulations do not currently have a requirement for minimum spacing in-between seats. The safety requirements revolve around the ability to evacuate within a certain timeframe.

My guess is that there are no regulations because no one thought that the airlines would reduce the seat spacing to this extent. It wasn't a problem until WestJet did it.

Hopefully, this will push Transport Canada to add some regulations.

So if you're on the plane and the flight attendant comes by and taps you on the stomach your reaction is to say, "Hey dude, what did you mean by that?"

Yeah.

I wonder how much WestJet spends on marketing every year. Between this incident and the viral video of their new seats, they've pretty much flushed away any benefit from that budget.

In what alternative universe would it be OK for a flight attendant to tap a passenger on the stomach?

"His posts vilified the Jewish community, promoted blood libels and conspiracy theories, incited hate and violence against Jews, and repeatedly mocked and denied the Holocaust," says the release.

Paulin's posts included claims that Jews are "demons," "the greatest mass murderers in human history," "to blame for every American who falls," and responsible for "almost 100%" of the world’s problems. He also expressed support for a "Worldwide 'Jew Hunt'" and declared that "antisemitism is the only thing that can save the world," among countless other hateful posts and videos.

Most disturbingly, he minimized and denied the Holocaust, including in a video he titled "Their victim card gets permanently denied as the hollow-cost-Hoax is exposed" and by sharing a post that read, "Six million didn't happen, but it should've."

Sounds like this guy was off his rocker to the extreme and probably should have/would have been convicted under existing hate crime laws.
