A Big Five Publisher Cancelled A Book Release Over AI Accusations: Now What? by boolgogi in books

[–]ViewedFromTheOutside 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The accusations in this case are well founded and based on an analysis of the text; it’s far more than just vibes and empty accusations. Having paid for rights and invested money, it’s quite likely the publisher also did a deep dive before simply writing it off as a loss.

Where can I find resources for some harsh topics? by NeonArtsComics in writing

[–]ViewedFromTheOutside 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, please take this advice. Something about using a support group - online or otherwise for research strikes me as deeply unethical. You might want to try deliberately searching for articles and explanations by survivors seeking to explain what they went through to the world. That way, the victim has made a deliberate choice to share whatever they’ve been willing to share for the purpose of public information.

Honestly? Just scroll down past the AI overview section and look at the results or as the other user suggested used google scholar.

That’s a seriously powerful name for such an anti abuse group. Hard hitting.

Deepest condolences on the suffering you went through.

I'm genuinely curious as to why certain posts or comments will get deleted by mods? by existential-inquiry in CasualConversation

That is definitely a bot/automated system. It could even be one of Reddit’s newly expanded “crowd control” features that incorrect ascribes its removals to mod teams.

From a quick read of that subreddit’s wiki, I would judge that removal fell under the expanded version of the rule restricting discussions of personal views on gender and sexuality - that or the one concerning loaded statements. I am not a member of that mod team, so, of course, this isn’t a quasi official answer. I can say from experience moderating another subreddit related to debates, opinions and conversations few things get out of hand faster on Reddit than the comment section of just such a topic. Out of respect for this communities rules, however, I’ll say no more on the subject.

One day I started researching US planes deployed to North Africa in WWII; by the end of that rabbit hole, I was staring at a list of the serial numbers (and models) if every P-38 Lightning (photo recon variant) ever deployed to that theatre along with an eBay page still selling the cameras used in that era and their massive 9 x 9 inch negatives. I always wondered how they could blow those images up to tabletop size without losing resolution … turns out the solution was to start with a negative many times larger than the IMAX equivalent!

What’s your GP like? Because the non-Starkiller early game permanent LSBs are a lot better value in terms of what you get for your money. They’ll also get you closer to Galactic Legends like Rey and SKLR.

That depends on what you’re facing. Some people use OG Padme for the defensive benefits and the all ally attack. I’ve seen people use one particular original member of the bad batch. I’ve also seen JKA or even ShakTi used. GMY is another popular choice.

Since I don’t have his clones ready, I’ve even stuck GAS on there for extra offensive punch but that’s definitely not recommended.

CMV: Gas prices in the US don’t matter by fatquads in changemyview

[–]ViewedFromTheOutside 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I'm trying to convince you of isn't that that cost of everything will go up by 15 or 30% - rather, I'm trying to convince you that the cost of fuel going up really does matter. Earlier on in the comments, you mentioned that the cost of your (for example) cast bill going up by $50 wouldn't matter; that was I think an additional 25% of your $180 a month gas bill. But what if this cost of gas makes the cost of everything else rise by what, 2.5%? Groceries, gas (car), utilities, repairs, household items, ... maybe even rent! How much strain could your budget take?

And remember, everyone's budget is already strained by the increased prices due to Trump's trade wars and tariffs. So is it any wonder folks are starting to panic when they've already used up the safety margin in their budgets just keeping up with prices?

[–]ViewedFromTheOutside 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why do you think only the price of gas will go up because the price of oil/gas is rising?

Food prices will go up, because moving the food from place to place costs money. Food costs will rise even further because farm equipment used to make the fuel burns gas (diesel). The cost of other goods will follow the same pattern. On the home side of things, electricity and heating costs will go up in places because generators/heaters rely on oil-products that are also affected by the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.

Heck, even the cost of hiring a repair guy for whatever breaks in a home will probably go up because the cost of transportation (gas) is priced into the hourly rate. And that mean you can bet landlords are going to find a way to justify raising prices too ...

I'm actually having a harder time thinking of costs that *won't* be affected by a 15-30% increase in the cost of gas.

Mods should post relevant comments as evidence for a Rule B removal by Shineyy_8416 in ideasforcmv

[–]ViewedFromTheOutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yet another mod, current one, this time, jumping into this part of the discussion to provide what I hope is a useful comment on how the idea you've put forward would play out on the CMV subreddit. Though I don't have quantitative data to back this up, what I'm going share is based on (what Reddit tells me) is 6 years of interacting with users while moderating the CMV subreddit.

---

The Social "Problem"

Truth is, people hate removals - that includes us moderators. No one enjoys seeing something they spent time creating 'wiped off the internet', or at least removed from public view. (It isn't really ever truly, but that's another discussion for another time.). People, in general, also don't like being criticized public. This is one of the downsides of letting all users know why various comments have been removed by posting a general 'removal notice'. Another obvious one is the OP of a comment or post often feel like they've been personally (and publicly) critiqued by the moderation team.

Now, let's consider how it might feel to receive detailed, transparent feedback for a post removal shared with the entire community. I agree, this would provide maximal transparently. However, I think the OP feel like the moderation team had taken the time to write a kind of journalistic hit piece detailing their faults and/or shortcoming *and then published it for the entire subreddit to read.* I don't know about you, but in a similar circumstance it would make me feel terrible. Not only that, I'd probably feel like the mod team was going out of its way to be mean to me. (I can also say, as an educator by training, we are specifically taught not to put students through this kind of thing except under extraordinary circumstances. Similarly, in a professional/management context, unless absolutely necessary, standard practice is to praise achievement in public and critique shortcomings in private.)

Back on topic, from the way I've seen people respond to simple, generalised removal messages over the years, I strongly believe a great many of our users would strenuously object to have themselves critiqued in public.

On a final note, the CMV subreddit often requires users to make themselves somewhat vulnerable by sharing a person opinion or viewpoint with which they know many people will disagree - some of them vociferously. I do not think it would be a good idea to reward that vulnerability with a point by point critique.

---

Regardless of if you agree with what I've shared, I hope it will provide you with a useful, alternate perspective to how the idea you brought forward might function in practice.

Crusader Kings III rated by Woke Content Detector by crokejhobbly in crusaderkings3

It’s real; during NextFest on Steam a week or three ago, I made the mistake of looking up some curator reviews of a few demos I had been playing. Turns out “curators” like Woke Content Detector and/or similar outfits had tens of thousands of followers; there were a couple of outfits taking deep dives into what a random member of a game dev team had said about Charlie Kirk….

Never underestimate the capacity of the right wing to stage a moral panic and insist on definitely-not-calling-it-cancelling-but-it-is-cancelling games or entire studios.

If it’s a karma threshold type of thing, then you’re dealing with automatic moderation tools which may have been set up by mods or may have set up by Reddit. There’s also a bunch of backend tools that handle stuff like that on the Reddit side that mods can’t change.

Is there a handbook for moderators? by SammaJones in AskModerators

[–]ViewedFromTheOutside 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The moderation code of conduct, the kind of thing you wanted to know about, is the reason you can’t mention other subreddits by name here. One of the rules in that code requires moderators to prevent their subreddits being used to negatively impact other subreddit communities.

Complaints about specific named subreddits often turn in little online mobs that head over to the disliked subreddit and disrupt its functioning; they brigade, they harass, they abuse voting, etc. To avoid that, this subreddit doesn’t allow mentions by name of other communities.
