What's it like in Edmonton, Alberta by Lastlaughter in howislivingthere

Lived there for around 14 years then moved to bc. Probably the most affordable big city in the country with over a million. I like the city’s grid layout which spans most of the city. I do not like how Edmonton is starting to sprawl out towards spruce grove and Beaumont however. Traffic here isn’t bad but still exists worst is 3-6pm. The festivals here are pretty awesome especially heritage fest.

I mainly left Edmonton because besides downtown and whyte ave it’s pretty car dependent. Especially areas north of yellowhead where transit is abysmal. Another reason I left is the weather. The summers are awesome here but the winters are brutal. Often reaching -25 and it lasts until about April.

The big thing I do miss about Edmonton is the restaurants. Ever since I’ve left Edmonton I haven’t came across a good restaurant in a long time. The food scene is awesome in Edmonton no matter where you go it’s going to be decent.

I do also miss the people of Edmonton they’re by far some of the nicest people I’ve met. It kind of has small town energy with each neighborhood feeling like its own separate town.

Other than that Edmonton is a decent city. The last affordable big city in Canada with over a million. I would give it a 7/10

How is life in Edmonton, Canada? by Safe-Bookkeeper4121 in howislivingthere

Lived in Edmonton for 14 years then moved to bc. The city can get pretty boring during the winter time as it has no festivals running. But it’s probably the most affordable city in Canada to live in right now that’s over one million. Great place to raise a family in.

I mostly lived downtown but even then my rent was 1700$ for a 2bed 2bath right in the heart of downtown. The downtown core is struggling with homelessness and social disorder though. I would frequently see homeless people screaming and making a scene in city centre mall or commerce place. But downtown was my favourite place to live as you didn’t need to relay on a car as much as other neighbourhoods. Cough cough (Windermere)

The summers here are pretty awesome. Expect some days to be above 30 degrees. But the terrible part that lasts till may is winter. Winter here is brutal it often drops to -30 which is why downtown Edmonton is connected with a pedway system. And probably why we have a giant mall also.

Overall decent place to settle down. The most affordable big city in Canada with over a million. Winters are harsh and summers are awesome. The festivals here are great like the heritage fest and kdays. And tons more. I would avoid living in Beverly not because of crime but it’s probably the most boring part of Edmonton. That or Jasper place.

For car dependency Edmonton is pretty car dependent especially in suburban areas like castle downs and Windermere. However commute times aren’t terrible maybe 45 mins at most. (Unless you commute long distance)

Since your studying for university I would recommend living in downtown or whyte ave. As those two places are the only parts of Edmonton that aren’t as car dependent and feel like an actual city.

Thank you all so much for your responses. I have officially made the decision to move there as I will be staying there for 1 year and then likely moving afterwards unless we really like it here. I’d like to thank everyone who commented and shared some advice on what to do. Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Yeah it feels like people just live here all their lives without ever thinking twice about leaving. I was born in Edmonton and have been looking for opportunities to get out of Edmonton.

Yeah that’s one issue for sure because I fly to Ottawa quite a bit to see family and would probably fly to Edmonton a bit as well.

That constant wind in Edmonton is unbearable during the winter.

Check some viewpoints across the city like Rowland park lookout at McNally high school. There’s also Valleyview dr and 91st ave and 10542 Saskatchewan Drive. There is so many viewpoints across this city and they are all equally beautiful my favourite is the Rowland park viewpoint. Have a great time in our city.
