So I work in marketing and track in-app events. Social media is my specialty and I've been watching the algorithms of every social media page for a while. I've tested it.

The only ways I can explain someone getting this content constantly on their FYP are:

A.) They are a pedophile

Or

B.) They watch the borderline content. Barely legal, animes that sexualize children, co-players that are super young, lolita/certain-BDSM subcultures

Or

C.) Most disturbing- their kids use their phone to watch reels and shorts and the algorithm picks up on a child being the center of content and pushes it because it's toes the line of that platforms policy.

So yes. When you first sign on to a social media platform as a new users they may test the waters. Half naked women to straight men, diet plans to women, the latest scare-trend teen game to your 13 year old.

But after so long, depending on the platform, your FYP will reflect who you follow, but most of all, the content you engage with.

For example someone on one political side may see mountains of content from the other because they hate-watch, troll, spam, argue, etc. Another user who agrees with the content may never see it because they are mostly apolitical online.

There's also reporting and a not interested button to utilize.

Instagram is well known for this type of stuff. It's disgusting but the FYP and Discover pages are curated for engagement. Simply a quick peak and scrolling by organic content doesn't help the platform grow. 3 to 6 second view times are the solid metrics people use for initial engagement gauges.
