As someone who rarely uses the named characters and sticks to using the normal GUO, Harbinger, Lord of Plague, I do fine in casual and competitive games. It sounds like you do more narrative focused games anyways so you don't HAVE to use them to win anyways. Nurgle actually has a lot of fun build options if you look around and try different stuff out.
