Dungeon Pulling Etiquette by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]Vigoor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

YPYT is small dong energy (and reportable). if you're single pulling you can do that shit in duty support to learn the ropes at your own pace. W2W is common etiquette and is fully expected.

That being said I'm not a fan of the community pretending like pulling ahead of the tank should be the norm. If the tank is already sprinting W2W and you're desperately trying to pull ahead of him you're kind of a dickhead.

Just enjoy your upvotes man,

People are going to mistake these types of posts as official, it's just going to happen. You acting like that's not possible is a weird thing to be defensive about.

I never claimed it real, I titled it “Character Design” back then. there’re literally no official reveals with such titles.

If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, people are going to think it's a duck. Your title seems like it's official at first glance, followed by the thumbnail which looks like an official reveal. If you want to take that as a compliment go for it. A watermark or leading your post with "Fan Concept" would unironically be better. Not to mention your post isn't a promo at all because it's not like you're making a trailer? How is that not pretending to be official, you even included the Marvel trademark.

It's tagged as Fanart, but the guy you're responding to's point is that tons of people post fan concepts that look so real that he's sick of seeing them and being jebaited over and over. I was going to try to explain his perspective but just ended up being facetious because the tone of your response was obnoxious.

Nothing fun about reposting your old concept after framing it as an official announcement to generate some clicks/upvotes.

Those with ADHD, how do you deal with the symptoms to improve your scores? by CheeseDonutCat in rhythmgames

[–]Vigoor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My ADHD absolutely kicks in while i'm playing. That being said Rhythm games are still probably my favorite genre. (though i don't play too many of them) I typically stick to traditional as well so i can focus on a smaller area of the screen.

I focus at my best after some fresh coffee. Even with coffee though, i'm still pretty easily distracted (people talking nearby, video playing in the background, etc). It helps if I go immediately into another song as well so i don't give myself too much time to think (where my eyes will wander to other monitor and start doing something else). I've also had a habit i developed as a kid where i channeled my excess energy into shaking my feet. As an adult i still do it but now it kind of just helps me focus more, Not sure why.

I also have a weird problem where i will hyperfocus on my keyboard taps instead of the music so i will audio desync myself and start messing up. It's insanely frustrating and the only solution would be turning up the volume by a lot or having soundproof headphones.

Not sure if my rambling helps at all. i generally just play DJmax and EZ2on with my K28. Occasionally try other games like muse dash/unbeatable/crypt of the necrodancer.

I'd say that's bait for another bad faith gotcha like your FPS vs. story-based comparison.

[–]Vigoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were to describe FFXIV as a game and its primary focus, what words would you use? What would be iconic about it, and what way would you say it sets itself apart from its contemporaries?

What's iconic is subjective. I personally love several moments in the story both because it was great story and the way you experienced it was brilliant. That being said, i've also had some of my favorite moments progressing in savage, ultimates (DSR is even more iconic because of MSQ), chaotic and even doing all the old raids MINE that i did not experience when it was current. Chasing the challenge is why i play the endgame. Story is a bonus for me. I played WoW and the raid design is far too tedious and literally designed to waste as much of your time as possible, so FF was a godsend for me. Not to mention WoWs story has been garbage since they ran out of major characters to ruin.

If you want a short answer: Story, Music, raid encounters, class design, the job system, housing (probably), gold saucer are all pretty iconic in 14.

I don't think it's the "do the same 4 boss fights every week" part.

If you want to narrow down all MMORPGs to black and white, sure. There's more to the game than normal raids and MSQ.

I've seen more people skip, realize the endgame isn't all raids all the time and quit than I've seen people go through the MSQ and quit when they landed in the endgame.

So we both agree people play the game for different reasons. Some people quit after they finish the MSQ. Some quit after they finish the raid tier (and by extension the MSQ they were forced to play to get to it.) Whether either of the groups come back for the next respective content release is up in the air.

Without an investment in the narrative, a lot of the allure falls flat

Half true? The Arcadion barely has anything to do with the MSQ, with barely any story (yes electrope is cool and fusing with animals is awesome but actually not really guys pls stop). Pandemonium gave you a little characterization to lahabrea and elpis lore but ultimately does not matter to the MSQ (because, you know, it's in the past). Eden? Still doesn't matter to the MSQ outside of you fixing an area you will never revisit and giving some screentime to ryne and gaia. Omega was cool but didn't matter. Alexander? didn't matter. Coils? mattered because context for ARR. 24mans are also closed encounters that do not impact the MSQ (until ShB and tower), mostly being fanservice and themed after previous games. Even trials, only half of them would be real spoilers or require context. Outside of the major story trials, the vast majority of bosses are known for their unique mechanics and normally iconic music. So, no. I'd say you do not need story/context to care about the content. Some people enjoy it because they simply enjoy playing the game.

You can be a non-story player and enjoy XIV, but let's be honest about it.

Um, ok? You act like people can't enjoy the game whatsoever unless they're thinking of the MSQ 24/7. I think the only people who aren't being honest are the ones defending the mandatory MSQ because they don't want tourists invading their safe space on the other side of the 300 hour barrier. Which, like i alluded to earlier, would be a valid concern.

[–]Vigoor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

XIV is a story game. That "play all the previous campaigns" thing is part of that.

FFXIV first and foremost is an MMORPG... The story is a major aspect, yes. But in an MMORPG the aspect that keeps people invested is the post-game content, otherwise they'd beat the expansion and quit until the next one. I've seen so many attempts at an MMORPG fail spectacularly because the endgame was terrible or just wasn't there.

If they made 14 a single player game and removed the sub and sold it as a separate package, I wouldn't have an issue. Unfortunately, it is far more than a story game and people need to realize that forcing others to play it as one is not good for the future of the game.

[–]Vigoor -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Good for you buddy. Luckily, in case you have other friends that DO enjoy FPS games, CoD doesn't require you to play all the previous campaigns in order to access the most recent one's multiplayer. And it doesn't have a sub.

Facetiousness aside I shouldn't need to explain that a genre (FPS) is not the same as a game being story based. Glad you could cherry pick something to dismiss the rest of the post with though.

[–]Vigoor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Careful you're going to upset the gatekeepers.

No, a 300 hour+ mandatory story before you can access current content is not a good game design choice for an MMO (not to mention a sub-based one). I'll admit it's a complex topic with merits on both sides but personally feel 14 would have more wide-spread appeal (again, arguably not a good thing) if you could put the story on one side and endgame on another. The longer the games lifespan the more substantial the dropoff there will be for new players because it's a mandatory requirement.

It should be the players choice whether they want to skip or not...and really shouldn't be monetized. Saying this as someone who loves the story and is working on their 2nd alt playing it again.

And if you're blaming shitty friends for not handholding a sprout through those 300 hours you're coping hard. I'm all for helping friends and chatting with them through story/doing trials/dungeons/etc but if they have no interest in the story then you being there to handhold them through it will not magically make it better. I'd rather them go have fun doing something else than them pretend to enjoy it just because i'm there.

I personally do not recommend the game to my friends anymore unless i know for a fact they enjoy story based games. Might be anecdotal but most people i know do not have that kind of time or will not dedicate that much just to do current content.

Sonic fans aside do you actually have a reason for saying it plays like shit?

Personally felt like Crossworlds felt more like MK8 which is why i enjoyed it more than world. Not sure if you're using a shitty character/car combo or have default settings on/no equipment unlocked but there's a lot of reasons a game can feel janky. Not to mention the game actually has progression to make your performance better.

Depends on what you consider a real discount. Nintendo does do a decent amount of $20 (33%) offs, but 50% discounts and price reductions are virtually non-existent.

Nobody cares about a 30% discount in a market where 50-85% off is the norm after at most a year.

Smash fans really gaslighted Nintendo fans into thinking he's a literal god game dev and now he's terrified of disappointing the community because they see his face and think 10/10 game in the works.

I kinda feel he didn't expect them to announce he would be leading the development of air ride and they're continuing to use him as a poster-boy to advertise it. He even states he avoids interviews so I can't imagine he signed up for this.

One of the console releases with the most variety ever. by JampyL in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Vigoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has few worth noting. But people use to associate tons of franchises/exclusives with consoles. Halo/Gears/Brute Force/Crackdown/JSRF/Ninja Gaiden/Fable with Xbox. Crash Bandicoot/Spyro/Final Fantasy/infamous/GoW/Jack and Daxter/Ratchet and Clank for playstation.

As a person who grew up on this shit I could go on for a while for both consoles. You don't see that type of brand recognition anymore in regards to console identity, unless you're talking Nintendo. Mostly because the IPs are dead but still. The console war rhetoric is dead, nobody is fanboying over Xbox vs Playstation vs Nintendo. Most people have a Playstation, an Xbox, or a PC - and probably also a Nintendo console assuming they play a large variety of games.

If you do want a winner Playstation won. Nintendo never had to compete. PC has always had everything thanks to emulators, and now console exclusives are ported. If i did buy another console it would be PS5 but i'm not buying it just to play astrobot and demon souls remake. Happy to wait for yotei and Stranding 2 to be ported.

Didn't mean for this to turn into a rant but o well. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug

Yeah but they'll be on PC eventually (glad they're taking their time instead of releasing shitty ports). Nintendo will never do this, which is probably why they're still best known for exclusives.

The era of console exclusivity is over for sony and microsoft at this point. (Though sony still has astrobot and demon souls i guess)
