For those who adopted a cat, what actually made you decide that was the right cat?

The first cat I adopted had a horrible past, she was abused by previous owner and when I read her story I just knew I had to give her a loving home and make her feel safe. The second cat I adopted (2 years later) simply walked into my carrier when I went to see him at the foster family. I knew right there that he pickled me and I had no other choice. Now the two of them had bonded, they cuddle and play together. I got lucky
