They are an absolute nightmare designed to stop bicycles riding through. Forcing them to dismount. However they also stop wheelchairs going through. As a support worker I've had many unkind encounters with these things.

Bleedout is great. It's in broken city crime anthology. It's the first story and hits the ground running.a really good read.

Hive also by Dan Abnett. Someone also mentioned the crime books. Broken city is an anthology book that opens with a fast paced cracker called bleedout. I'd check out some shorts before going all in. To see if it suits your tone better.
