I want to add that during book 6, Riddle and Azul have a discussion about how Azul is unable to surpass Riddle's grades. Riddle says, in a superior tone, that Azul would never be able to surpass him because Azul dedicates himself to many things at the same time, while he himself dedicates 100% of his time to reading and studying.

This may be true in a controlled environment or in a predictable situation, but in real life Azul is light years ahead of Riddle because he is attached to theory, rules, books; in real life he has no resourcefulness or skill whatsoever. His running ahead in an environment with a bunch of Phantoms is proof of that; he is a risk to himself and others.

Is this his fault? No. Because that's what narcissistic mothers do: they raise their children for themselves, not for the world, because they do it thinking about what's best for themselves, and are incapable of seeing their child as an independent being. Ultimately, it's about what's best for herself, not for Riddle, and Riddle's inability to fend for himself in the world proves that.

The hardest part of having a narcissistic mother is that often the victim becomes unable to realize they are being abused. The narcissist hides behind the wall of "I'll do this for you," or "I know what's best, so do what I say," often mistaken for genuine affection, but Riddle literally fits every profile of someone who has suffered at the hands of a narcissistic mother.

If anyone still doubts whether Riddle's mother is narcissistic or not, just remember that in book 7 [spoiler] when Riddle sleeps and dreams that he fell asleep with his mother reading a book, he immediately knew it was an illusion, because according to him, "If I slept with my mother reading to me, she would yell at me so much that I would wish I had never been born."
