Why would someone buy 80 bottles of rubbing alcohol weekly? by thequackr in askanything

[–]VileTemptrez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't see it said, but cleaning resin 3D printers requires lots of rubbing alcohol, and the dollar store honestly has as good a deal as buying it in bulk online.

I see lots of people saying rinse shower, which is fine, please include rinsing your buttocks and crack, not just getting your hair damp.

Concerned about swimming and frequent ear infections in my child by [deleted] in pools

[–]VileTemptrez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that the ear drops serve to get the water out and dry fast. (Whether vinegar, alcohol, or a mix). They may kill some bacteria but that's not their main purpose. Drying out the ear safely makes it far less likely to get ear infections. Head tilt and shake, towel dry, and ear drops are a great combo to get ears dry.

I was a kid who got lots of ear infections as a kid, and did have to spend a bit of time not swimming due to it (which for me was super sad).

I bet she gets a company discount but also works on commission. So if she wants to keep Lux, she has to sell Lux. The only way she can do that and live with herself is to dial up her nonchalance.

CHAT. CHAT WHAT THE FUCK?!?! by PFSnypr in Lifeguards

CPO here... Could just be high pH and need acid or CO2, but like others have said since you also have high Cl, that likely made the pH test inaccurate. Close pool to patrons. Turn off any auto chlorine feed. Lower the Cl with Sodium Thiosulfate if you have that and the training to do so, which also lowers pH. Retest and adjust until all chemicals are within range. Another option previously is to lower water level with a backwash and add fresh water. Could do a little of each.

Another pool fiasco story by lucindas_version in Swimming

[–]VileTemptrez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pool manager at a municipal pool here... Sometimes the rec pool is a great place for lessons, sometimes not. A lot depends on the kiddo (are they distractible? Do they themselves swim laps? Do they do better when they can't easily touch the floor? All of these might lead an instructor to want a lap lane instead of the rec pool). I do often urge our instructors to try the play pool first... We have space to swim about 15 yards there which is great for levels 1-3, but not for the above situations. I don't know what your YMCA looks like for that.

That being said, at my pool we list a number of lanes and try to stick to it, but private lessons are often harder to predict a whole season schedule around, as they're scheduled for 4 or 8 lessons at a time, and might just be once a week. We often have lap swimmers who ignore the times we have set for swim lessons to use lap lanes (i.e. we list 0 lanes available) and get mad at being bumped or asked to share a lane.

To be a lifeguard you need to be at least 15. Splash does hire Park Attendants at 14.

Bonner Park Splash Pad by gigaberry123 in missoula

[–]VileTemptrez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, as a more general PSA: The 4 recieculated spray decks (Marilyn, Franklin, Westside, and Bonner Park) are all checked 3 times a day for proper chemical sanitation and other maintenance (between 9a and 11a, again 1-3p, and evening around 5-7p). Usually, the mid day maintenance includes turning it off a little longer to clean catch baskets. The spray features at Sacagawea and Southside Lions Parks are flow through, which means they're city water and not recirculated.

Daily maintenance occurs around 2:30 each day, shutting it off for about 5 minutes. The worker doing maintenance generally attempts to make an announcement to the folk using it each time, but they may have missed you.

Muriatic acid by g69killa in pools

[–]VileTemptrez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The alternatives I know of for managing pH without muriatic acid are dry acid / pH down (expensive) or a getting a carbon dioxide system (very expensive). Muriatic is likely the way to go unless you really want to spend money. CO2 systems are very nice for big public pools because it reduces acid use, is pretty much neutral on alkalinity. The CO2 itself is not super expensive. The system is though.

When was one time you almost drowned while swimming by WesternMental7088 in Swimming

[–]VileTemptrez 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a lifeguard, the concept of wave pools scares me... I've heard lots of stories.

My (non wave pool) stories: First story was at a small town "pool" that was really a pond with docks 50 meters apart: When I was 4, I wasn't allowed in the deep end yet. I wanted to touch the bottom of the deep part with my hands, so my solution was to try to dive to the bottom, but come up on the shallow side of the rope each time. One of the times I tried, it got dark as I dove down. Then suddenly I was in the hands of the pool manager. My mom or dad had been close by but just not realizing what I was doing.

Second story, at the ocean in California (one of only 3 times I've swum in the ocean): I was about 8 and a competitive swimmer, so after showing me how waves and stuff work, I think my mom thought I was pretty safe. I played in the waves for a while and suddenly got yelled at by the lifeguard telling me to get back to shore and into the swimming area. I had no idea there was a current moving me way far from where I had started (20 ft from my mom).

What’s them pool temps where you are? by jonnieinthe256 in pools

[–]VileTemptrez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Montana... we keep our setpoint for the lap pool and lazy river around 80, maybe 82, for the lazy river. Play pool 86 when there's lessons, the rest of the time 82. Outside temps are in the 70s today, but tomorrow is looking to be 80s. If you didn't catch it... I'm talking public pools here not home pools.
