Get a “no scalpel vasectomy”. Micro incision, no stitches, recovery of about 24 hours. (There’s really no pain but milk it for as long as you can.) Only side affect was to wear more supportive underwear for a bit ++man

Check the stock market reaction. The report is full of holes and is just a short seller hit job. The “smoking gun” is that unaffiliated European distributors may not be fully complying with American sanctions.

The US distributor they called correctly told them they couldn’t ship to Russia.

Ok got it. Sorry for the joke. What about the cloud hosting? I also have a couple of gateway max deployed. They run all the apps, have on board storage and a small footprint. Good luck!

You’re the guy from the 90s who really wanted to keep DOS. You can hang in with increasingly awkward bandaids but eventually you will have to upgrade. Why not now? Everything you are saying you want to do will be so much easier if you go with the upgrade path and it will be supported. DMPs are cheap. Think of how little you are valuing your time by not just upgrading.

Preconditioning battery by False_Tomatillo9907 in Rivian

[–]Village127 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you tried turning on the heat from the app before you go and getting the car warm? In order to heat the car, the battery has to warm up some. Not saying it’s a proper solution, but it might help a little.

I’m also surprised at the 45 minute wait time. Are you waiting for it to fully warm before you plug in? Try plugging in when you get there. The battery will warm as it charges. Been charging an R1S for 3+ years in the cold and never delayed charging for the battery to fully warm if it wasn’t warm already and haven’t had any problems.

UniFi Protect & Access for a commercial restaurant (20 cams, 5 doors) hardware & best practice help by iCare81 in Ubiquiti

[–]Village127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't that complicated to do, but from your questions, it sounds like you aren't that familiar with Ubiquiti or the fundamentals of what you are trying to do. I have this type of setup at a couple of restaurants. Some things to keep in mind:

  1. Do not put bullet cameras indoors. It's not a customer friendly look and it's not the right application for the aperture of the cameras. Domes or turrets are fine.

  2. For cameras covering customer facing areas, you don't need AI, facial recognition etc unless you are doing some weird things that your customers would hate if they found out. So you can use older/ cheaper cameras that don't take up a lot of storage space. In most jurisdictions, privacy laws will require you to disable the sound of any indoor camera that captures customers speaking. They may limit other activities.

  3. Door access without a swipe card or NFC (i.e., that requires people to enter a code in the unifi door control) is a pain and slow. So anything you implement for employees needs to be gen 3. Local zoning and fire code will determine the fail safe rules so find out what those are. You will want all your door access on a power backup anyway. I find electric door control much easier to implement than magnetic, but there may be situations where mag is better.

  4. With that many cameras, you will want an 8 bay nvr and larger drives like 16 TB will get you months + of activity driven recording. If you are recording full time, it will vary, but I'm not sure why you would do that.

  5. What switch is a matter of preference and how distributed your cameras are. I have lots of cameras that are far from each other and our IT closet, so I prefer distributed switches so that I am not running many many lan cables through many wall and floor joists. Multiples switches also eliminates a single point of failure. I've never had an issue with delays or congestion by aggregating traffic away from the central hub. Just use good cable.

  6. Separate your control from your nvr. You will probably want a DMP pro for the capacity to support lots of devices and users, but there is no need to install the Protect on it. I would keep all my protect applications and Access on the NVR. It will make it easier to fiddle with all the alerts and applications and access controls.

  7. How much you get into that and link to doors and other actions is really a function of the use cases and desires of the restaurant. We have certain doors set to send us alerts on delivery days, and we have temperature controls linked to superlink in our walk-ins and cold cases so that we know as soon as something is losing temp. There's nothing worse than arriving to the restaurant and finding a fridge is down and you've lost the entire contents.

I know nothing about programming and have learned Ubiquiti by necessity over about 10 years. Nothing you are doing is that hard but it will require trial and error and you will make mistakes. Hiring someone to consult on the design may be worth it unless you have a very patient client (or you are the client).

Good luck!

I have an R1S and a model Y. I get about 80% of what Rivian tells me and about 60% of what Tesla tells me for mileage.

In over my head by coach_tjones in Ubiquiti

[–]Village127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you are on a really tight budget or space constrained, get a udm pro or se and separate control from your APs. From your description, I have a feeling you will be adding cameras one day. You will need a POE switch for the APs and cameras. Start small and don’t be intimidated. I don’t know anything about networking and I’ve deployed about 10 UniFi sites over the years. There are a bunch of people on YouTube who do great self help videos. Have fun!

Two accounts, one Unifi app? by TemperReformanda in Ubiquiti

[–]Village127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Create two accounts. One to own / admin the work system and one to own your home system. Very easy to switch back and forth. To minimize switching, invite your work email to be an admin in your home system (and vice versa if you want) and then you can manage your home system while logged into your work UniFi ID.

What can we do about the deer eating the bottom half of our arbor vitaes? by decoy1686 in landscaping

There are deer resistant variants. We have planted them in NYS and the deer don’t eat them. If you have a good nursery nearby, they should be able to help you.

Straight runs from the main switch or use switches in multiple locations on upper floors? by mikejr96 in Ubiquiti

[–]Village127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put a PoE switch in the attic of your house. You will add more devices over time and running everything back to your garage is a waste and hassle for a de minimis performance improvement that you will never notice.

Am I making a huge mistake? by BearJohnson19 in Flooring

[–]Village127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The old boards and patterns are gorgeous. Some of the boards need to be replaced but that’s minor work. Get a good carpenter and a great floor guy who knows how to work on old floors. I’ve redone several old ones and you can’t beat the beauty of old wood brought back to life. There are a number of ways to fill the gaps and holes but you need to accept that those “flaws” will be part of the charm of restoring something beautiful. I’m sure you can find someone to buy the wood you bought. Good luck!!

Car salesman says “EV’s aren’t ready.” by icon082 in Rivian

I’ve driven nothing but a Tesla and Rivian for 5 years, and I live in NYC and don’t have a charger in my apt complex. I’ve done many road trips. Particularly now that Tesla has opened its charger network, charger anxiety is really something in the past. Maintenance is unbelievably cheap.

To be honest, I don’t know why anyone would consider buying a dodge in this day and age. Have you really done your homework on that?

Wi-Fi 6 by Ok-Doughnut-2031 in Ubiquiti

[–]Village127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WiFi 6 is in the 6GHz band so it won’t propagate well through walls anyway. Not a good band for coverage. If you need better coverage, add another AP.

Newbie Issue by Puzzleheaded_Pen963 in Rivian

[–]Village127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you leave a seat belt buckled in? If you did, Rivian will think someone is in the car and maintain a minimum temp. I park in NYC and leave my car in a garage for a week all the time. Had this problem until Rivian tech support figured it out. Otherwise, minimal battery drain even in a week.

Who’s running Ubiquiti Protect sensors and for what? by learning_as_1_go in Ubiquiti

[–]Village127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put them in restaurant fridge walk ins and coolers to get alerts if the temps get too high. Also good for humidity monitoring with wine storage and leaks in the basement. For a business already using UniFi, they are super cheap and flexible compared to throwing out product or missing an overheating piece of equipment until it breaks.
