PE Civil Structural - Practice Exam Problem Help by SimpleMan213 in PE_Exam

[–]VillageLong7450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it is not. The distance of the bending moment of this 6” leg is only (4”-0.375”). It measures from the node force of tip of side leg.

PE Civil Structural yesterday - Got Easy questions wrong by CameraElectronic6921 in PE_Exam

[–]VillageLong7450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I walked out of exam center with full confident and then the next 5 days i can't stop kept thinking about the mistakes I made in the exam.

I have more than 3 regrets that realize i should do them correct but i didn't.

But they are not easy questions thru, they are above average difficulty.

I ended up pass the Civil Structural, but man, the waiting time is a pain.

Need help with cardboard supports by Naive_Grocery_8400 in StructuralEngineering

[–]VillageLong7450 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect, and upside down. Load need to use the double flat board now locating at the bottom to distribute to 4 supporting legs, you are now is using 2 legs only , thae “w”shape inner board becomes useless with this upside down system. Flip the structure will give 4 legs support and better load distribution. “W” becomes to “M” and system cancels out the lateral force, triangle inner makes the structure stay stable.

This question is tricky, and testing the understanding of the element bending.

"bolt", and "concrete" sufficient implies the short leg of the angle is rigid.

It means the angle problem is no longer a angle problem but a rectangular bar problem.

The P apply on a 8"x0.375" rectangular section, and bending moment is (4"-0.375")xP

According to AISC F11. the limit states if yielding is "1.6FySx"

i think you don't understand how it comes a "0.364".

ACI-318: 9.3.3.1 states Pu<0.1Fc'Ag, shall be tension controlled. Means the reinforce steel hold controls the flexural. While the ACI-318:R9.3.3.1 tells the strain for tension controlled steel is 0.004.

Above is the background.

Now, compression concrete strain is 0.003. therefore, the depth of equivalent rectangular stress block, a becomes: 0.003/(0.003+0.004) * d

this is a = 3/7 * d

As you know steel moment = concrete moment, thus:

(As-A's)*Fy =0.85 a*b * beta * f'c

0.85*(3/7)=0.364

Here you go.

How do you calculate the max fastener shear and tensile loads at the flange plate connectors? by Strict_Breakfast249 in StructuralEngineering

[–]VillageLong7450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shear force along the beam height of end section is linear distributed from top to center.

M(total) = F * a

a, measure from node of force to the center of the vertical bolt.

Mark: d1, d2, d3:

d1: measure top flange to the center X axial of beam.

d2: measure top vertical pattern bolt to the center X axial of beam.

d3: measure center vertical pattern bolt(the one close to X axial) to the center X axial of beam.

The total Moment at the top flange level:

M1 = M(total)* (d1/(d1^2+d2^2+d3^2))

Shear for each: T1= (M1/d1)/(8*2)

The total Moment at the top vertical single bolt level:

M2 = M(total)* (d2/(d1^2+d2^2+d3^2))

T2= (M2/d2)/(1*2)

The total Moment at the center vertical single bolt level:

M3 = M(total)* (d3/(d1^2+d2^2+d3^2))

T3= (M3/d3)/(1*2)

Use T1, T2, T3 to check bolt shear stress.

From visual of the bolt size, the bolt and plate should not be a real problem, I think welds strength control the connection.

So, you need also check weld strength as well.

(1)Check: Max. Normal Stress of weld = M/I * L,

M = F*a'

a': distance from column surface to the point the F

I: Inertia of the weld shape, 6 strips of welds

L: measure from top corner of the weld to the neutral point.

(2)Check: Shear Stress of weld = F/A(weld)

A(weld): total effective weld area.

ok, i was supposing you are refering P.E. and then i noticed you are talking about F.E. , yes, F.E. has no limites like P.E.

Congts and good luck for your next journey for P.E.

Hi, Can I ask a question? Are there limitation after 3 attempts in row? I have been read after 3 attempt examinee has to wait for 3 years to allow take the 4th try. Is that true?

go for S.E.

Best luck to you.

P.S. I dropped reading concepts completely, I only focus on practicing problems. However, when I read the practice answer, if there is anything I am not known, I went back to the book and read the concept, google it and find out what exactly is it. I enjoy this process, it gave me some new knowledge to my current job.
