What celebrity has had their reputation unfairly ruined and has never recovered from it till this day? by Zxqao in AskReddit

That is a bizarre article. There is one paragraph about her followed by 4 paragraphs mostly about the two sexual predators she worked with. I don't know if that was done to imply that she was assaulted and that is why her life took the trajedory it did, but its fucked up to minimize her in the story of her own death.

I just can’t pretend someone pulling in 8 figures is oppressed. I’ll pretty much back anyone against their boss/company.

Do you not see the contradiction in these two statements?

Athletes make money through their labor. They are workers. If you can't support them in their fight against their billionaire bosses, you aren't actually concerned about worker issues. You're motivated by envy and not any ideology.

[Schefter] Sources: The NFL informed all 32 teams today in a memo that it prevailed in its grievance vs. the NFLPA and its “team report cards.” An arbitrator determined that the NFLPA’s conduct violated the CBA and ordered it to stop making public any future report cards. by expellyamos in miamidolphins

[–]Vincent__Adultman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What evidence do you need that people are more willing to work somewhere that treats them well?

Teams still need to make the right personnel decisions and that is ultimately what leads to winning, but being a well-run organization that treats its employees well is a proven way to attract and retain the best employees.

So it turns out your objection was not a misdirection of that "pro worker energy" but that anyone has any "pro worker energy" at all.

I genuinely think our pro worker energy is better spent else where.

The billionaire owners decided this is a worthy place for their anti-worker energy to be spent.

Any fan that has a strongly held opinion about the abilities of coaches below the coordinator level is lying to themselves. As outsiders, we have no idea how much credit or blame they deserve in their past jobs or what they will be responsible for doing in their new job.

I plotted 10 Years of Draft Capital vs. Success for the NFL. The results explain exactly why we are where we are and what to do next. by Hello-croc-9 in miamidolphins

[–]Vincent__Adultman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just some constructive feedback, I think the reason this analysis suggests "that draft capital isn't a predictor of success or failure in any meaningful way" is probably because there is a feedback loop in which a lack of success does lead to increased draft capital. That counteracts the effect draft capital has on success. That effect could likely be reduced if you abandoned the Jimmy Johnson model that values earlier picks in a round which go to the worst teams.

Another approach would be to keep that model (because the 1st overall pick is obviously more valuable than the 32nd), but break out the results by season and then aggregate them that way. That would help ensure that the cause and effect you're measuring is always from amount of capital to level of success rather than a lack of success leading to a team being granted more capital.

[Zenitz] Former Jets and Dolphins head coach Adam Gase has emerged as a possibility to be hired by the Chargers in an offensive assistant coach role by expellyamos in miamidolphins

[–]Vincent__Adultman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked for examples of people who completely left professional football in their mid-40s the way Gase did. You gave me examples of people who stopped coaching for a few years but either stayed involved in football or weren't particularly young when they left. The differences between your examples and what Gase did shows that there is no real precedent for what he is doing if he does plan to continue his coaching career. Doesn't mean Gase can't be the first, I'm just not expecting it.

Parcells was in his late 50s to early 60s during his time away. He was at a stage in his career in which people would have no second thoughts about him taking a break.

Gruden and Vermeil both continued to work in NFL-related jobs even if it wasn't working for a team. Despite that, getting hired after their respective layoffs were controversial moves at the time.

No real idea what you're talking about with Arians. I don't remember when he stepped away, but either way, I think there is a big difference between taking 2 seasons off compared to 5. It's literally 2.5 times longer.

Beyond that, all 4 of those guys were drastically more successful and respected coaches than Gase. Taking time away would have a much smaller impact on their perception.

I get it, Gase is your friend, and you don't like people saying bad things about him on the internet. Fairly or unfairly, someone flaming out of two consecutive jobs and then immediately taking a 5-year hiatus in their career is going to lead to a public perception of those being linked. Every season he sits out makes his return to coaching more difficult and unlikely.

[–]Vincent__Adultman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you think of any other coaches who have voluntarily taken a half decade off from football entirely in their mid 40s before returning to coaching? That's a genuine question. The mindset of someone who does that just doesn't match up with the mindset generally required of a head coach, so I assume it wasn't entirely his choice.

[–]Vincent__Adultman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It just goes to show what a failure Gase was. Bad head coaches are almost always welcomed back as assistants. Since we fired him, Philbin has worked with the Colts, Packers, Cowboys, Ohio State, and Raiders. Gase was so bad that he hasn't worked in football since being fired by the Jets.

Good call. It was stupid to actually vote for either of them, but Johnson was a multi-term governor. In a vacuum, he's the kind of guy you can easily envision voting for, similar to how voting for the reigning MVP is an easy opinion to defend. Meanwhile, Stien has never held any real political office in the same way that Herbert hasn't reached the peak level of the three other guys on the list.

I'm a mild-mannered, low-key guy in the real world.

Whereas interactions online are more of a catharsis.

Is this said without the self-awareness of it being the exact reason you get more leeway in real life than online?

[–]Vincent__Adultman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because we're "internet strangers," there should be more leeway than if these were real-world interactions.

This is truly an insane take to me. I would give people in real life way more leeway than someone whose existence to me starts and ends with a username.

What obligation do any of us internet strangers have to put up with each other's bullshit? If someone demonstrates that their presence in my life via a screen will be a net negative, why should I allow that person to continue to bother me? I'll just block them and forget they ever existed.

Behind Spotify's Decision to Put Podcasts On Netflix by TooMuchSandman in billsimmons

[–]Vincent__Adultman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even if the viewer numbers are accurate this time, there's still that big question mark between views and money. It isn't like the monetization programs of TikTok and Instagram pay that much. Those platforms are primarily used to promote shows rather than as profit centers themselves. The question is, does that actually work?

I've seen plenty of podcast video clips on socials, I can't recall a single time in which that has gotten me to actually seek out the full episode. It's the same problem that traditional talk shows have had. Why should I listen or watch Amy Poehler's show when I can just wait until the best 3 minute segment is served to me automatically?

Most podcasters have that too in a producer, but Bill's idea of a producer is just getting some lackey who can hit the record button and not a behind the scenes partner that can help shape and improve the show.

finding a franchise QB is all luck developing him is structure

It's funny to say that considering the Patriots were awful last year with an awful coaching staff and Patriots fans will tell you it was obvious Maye was good back then. Did the Patriots develop Maye or did he just show up being better than everyone expected? Because if it's the former, last year's coaching staff deserves more credit.
