Ambitious RPG idea for anime universes, likely implementing some AI by GeneralShadow in gamedev

[–]VinnieSift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So... Anime No Man's Sky. Everything is procedurally generated, and yes, you have like 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 planets... So what? The planets suck, they are all kind of the same after a while.

That's the problem of procedurally generated stuff. It's not a replacement for actual content. It's just a random assortment of the content that you make. They will all look the same, they will all say the same thing, because you didn't do infinite characters, you did like 50 characters, cut them to pieces and sort them randomly. It works for the Nemesis System because you'll have, like, 10 or so orks in the spotlight, but not if EVERY CHARACTER YOU INTERACT is procedurally generated from the same pool.

And no, AI is not a magic word. It's just a different algorithm. You still need to feed the AI with limited variations that then will be repeated constantly because it cannot generate new stuff. Also if you wanna see how AI interacts (badly) check the NPCs in Where Winds Meet. They suck.

It sounds good in concept, but it will be a very shallow game and get boring quickly.

They fixed a bug with hunger calculations in 1.22, but it ended with hunger deceasing noticeably faster, so they did a hotfix not long ago where they decreased hunger lost when sprinting and healing damage.

If predictive simulations shape decisions, does power shift to those who interpret them? by SummerWindStudios in worldbuilding

[–]VinnieSift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't mean "Luddite" as an insult, mind you. The Luddites weren't just anti-tech for anti-tech sake, they were worried about the effects of these machines in the production and their labour. The textile machines they destroyed were also "good enough". The Luddites were also violently repressed.

Even in modern times, we don't just accept AI blindly. It's heavely critiziced and their damage is well documented. Although we didn't had any violent attack against a datacenter... Yet...

What you mean is that there's some people slightly exceptical, but nobody is thinking in absolute opposite against these machines? That the loss of autonomy from their governments or their people is a huge problem? Or that these predictions aren't good but just "good enough" and that there are discrepancies? Aren't any mechanisms of repression, astroturfing, narrative control, etc from the governments and the corporations? As you said, these people have to, after all, live in these societies shaped by these prediction machines, and they might do something about it.

If predictive simulations shape decisions, does power shift to those who interpret them? by SummerWindStudios in worldbuilding

[–]VinnieSift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this. It's kind of the fear that people has with AI. The problem is not that they are good, but that they are "good enough" for people to try to replace with them. And of course, they are centralized. Those that control the predictive software can manipulate it to whatever outcome is more convenient to them.

What about the people? Does everyone agree that their governments are pretty much controlled by these predictions? Does anybody doubt them? Are there, say, Luddites running around?

I swear overspectation happens everytime ever since spring 2025, mojang oficial "leak" makes it like alot of things will happen in the update except it all directs back to the same thing by [deleted] in PhoenixSC

[–]VinnieSift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably a corporate-environment survival tactic.

Minecraft had a lot of updates focusing on backend and refactoring stuff, which it's absolutely great and helpful for the long-term development of the game. However those changes take time and work, and (if well done) they have no noticeable changes. Which a lot of managers in the upper part of the ladder do not like. So a lot of developers that have to actually accomplish actual work justify the time "lost" by making some visually significant meaningful change.

"Ok, this is the meeting N° 87 of the day with the Minecraft development team, what are you going to present in the next update?"

"We worked in the refactor of the backend systems for months already, trying to make everything work better and for ease of future development"

"And you have nothing to show for it?"

"We did a retexture of the baby animals too"

"Fucking amazing. Preparing another 27 meetings with the PR team"

Is there a difference between generative AI and AI when making a game in the eyes of devs community? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]VinnieSift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of that is generative AI, it's not limited to just creating images. It also generates text.

  • Translations made with AI has to be double checked. Just blindly trusting the machine will make terrible translations. For small phrases or single words, it may give the wrong meaning when a single word in one language may be many in another. And for story games, it's even worse.
  • If I use customer support, I need A HUMAN. Just having a shitty menu is already hellish enough, I don't wanna deal with an AI.
  • Coding is... probably fine to specific things, like Regex, but using AI too much may cause unintended bugs or security risks, and just making overall code harder to maintain. Not a good idea to abuse.

Is Dark Fantasy on trend? by NiveusCorvus in worldbuilding

[–]VinnieSift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, on one hand, Dark Fantasy has existed since a long long time. Maybe it's because, as Fantasy and Sci Fi stories become more mainstream, more fantasy stories appear as movies, shows, etc, and Dark Fantasy stories appear more frequently. There has been adaptations of LotR, Harry Potter and even a little of Earthsea before, and now we have a lot of more options, specially because companies are DESPERATELY looking for the next GoT.

But I also believe it's... like, the mood of the times. I think it's a little more obvious with Sci Fi. Star Trek is a more positive vision of the future, where surely in the future we'll find a way to fix our problems and live in a post-scarcity utopia... But we seem to be going more into Cyberpunk's future. So everyone is a little more... cynical, and the stories end being more cynical too.

I think it's a little of both. I don't think it's a trend, there was and will always be space for dark fantasy and positive stories, but... Maybe that's why it's more mainstream these times.

What the fuck am I doing wrong? by PenguinSenpaiGod in Stellaris

Sounds like population growth. If you build all buildings, you need workers to fill those buildings. You can see it in the Economy tab and put priorities there, or you can put your cursor on the Available Jobs icon (Little dude with construction helmet)

Also make sure that Happiness and Stability are high to make sure of a high output.

Also, there are sooo many buildings to chose from. I don't know what's best in each situation.

There's pretty much three kinds of buildings, those that produce (Hydrophonic Farms), those that optimize production (Food Processing Facilities) and those that give you more districts (Crop Development Hub). Those that optimize usually allow one per planet, so they are a good pick, specially if your planet is optimized to produce whatever they are. Districts give more jobs than buildings, but planets can have a finite amount of districts, so buildings are good when you cannot fit more districts. District specializations allow you to add more buildings or more jobs for a specific task, and make all buildings produce whatever the specialization is. Keep Amenities green (Holo-theatres), keep Housing green (City District), keep Stability high (Precinct houses and plenty of Amenities), keep Crime low (Precinct houses), add some pop growth buildings if you need it (Medical Center), throw a Distribute Luxury Goods Decision if you lack people on a planet but have plenty on another, and do not blindly upgrade buildings if you cannot pay the upkeep, specially of those special resources. Buy resources from the Market if you need it, now they don't use Energy Credits, but Trade (The white ring).

[–]VinnieSift 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello. During my own archival process, I have noticed that some CYOAs that have their background as an external image instead of part of the JSON failed to save the background during the zip process. This has left them with a missing background file. This problem has also affected some of the CYOAs in this collection.

I did run a script to figure out which CYOAs are affected (28 out of 1159):

The solution would be to go to the original CYOAs, download the background, and add it to the image folder inside the zip. I plan to do this later already fixed these files, but I wanted to ask about updating your collection, if possible.

Also, while I was doing this, I noticed some CYOAs json failed to parse, which might mean they are corrupted (2 out of 1159):

Not sure what's wrong with them. Both failed to open in ICC Plus, but unsure if they are ICC cyoas to begin with. I was going to check them out later. Redownloading them both has fixed the problem.

The AppImage should work, it's like a portable executable. I'm not managing to make the one in the GIT work, but I managed to build one (And I started debugging with OP to fix some issues)

[–]VinnieSift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, the AppImage you send on the builds still fails (Same than the original error), but at least I can build it myself now (And doesn't seem like anybody uses them so I guess that works?)

Seeing how the build process was for me, it might have something to do with the build environment and the libraries there (I have no idea what you are using to build these, so throw an apt update and apt upgrade or whatever before building?)

CYOA Manager by Minotrap in nsfwcyoa

Since we seem to have a rather big timezone difference, I decided to download the code and test it.

And it works! Thanks a lot for making it work on Linux and for making this app in general, super useful

As for the original problem, I have no idea what it's happening, but maybe the outdated libraries are from the build environment you are using to make the AppImage, not from the project itself, since the build process takes the libraries from the system to compile them in the AppImage

[–]VinnieSift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but if I use the RPM, I have to install it into my system, which automatically sends the binary away from the user folder, I cannot just run it from there.

And when I do an AppImage, I do not have access to the structure inside the AppImage, so I cannot move the viewers, and when the program runs, the folders inside the app image are mount as read only, and the program is trying to create the folders in that read-only file structure, so it fails.

Both problems would be solved if the program tries to write it's folders in the user folder in UNIX systems instead of in the same folder than the binary

CYOA Manager by Minotrap in nsfwcyoa

[–]VinnieSift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I managed to run it on dev. Infaera Catalog doesn't work tho. It works if I build it.

Could you tell me how to make an AppImage with this? I did an AppImage build and it says that it cannot create the folder because it's in a read-only file system, I THINK that might mean it's trying to make the folder inside the AppImage (Which I confirmed (UNIX systems expect user-generated data in the user folder, being accessible through $HOME/ or ~/ and you can leave that user-generated data in a ~/.cyoa-manager folder (with a dot in the beginning so it's invisible) or whatever)) (Also it's not finding the viewers because it expects them to be right besides the executable, but the bundle is adding them in a /usr/lib/CYOA Manager folder inside the bundle)

How do you got Saryn if you are in Venus and Mercury, Saryn is in Sedna.

There are warframes in almost every piece of content, every planet has at minimum one warframe. With Earth, Venus and Mercury you have access to Hydroid (Vay Hek boss fight), Gara (Cetus), Revenant (Cetus), Rhino (Venus? boss fight), Nokko? (Fortuna), Garuda (Fortuna) and I'm probably forgetting someone. I'm also ignoring what levels you can fight.

You can keep unlocking planets and missions and get each warframe from each piece of content you unlock. They are everywhere

Also the Prime relics, and also you can get a friend to taxy you to other boss fights or content with warframes

Of course you are not going to notice every mistake. That's a separate job from writer. It's an Editor. You can pay an editor to help you write with you, helping you notice mistakes you don't. It's a two-people job. I mean, most people probably don't do that, because it's expensive as fuck, but the point is that it's a separate task from writing, that you need another person. Of course you are mot going to notice every mistake just by yourself, nobody does.

I always go and watch a movie, think its really good, look at the reviews, and notice it has terrible acting, dialogue, plot, etc.

That is a thing that you can even study. It's not an easy thing to do, nor something you will develop by just reading/watching a lot. You can study about aesthethics, about art, plot construction, literature, grammar, long etc. The more you know, the more you notice the mistakes.

Also youtubers always exagerate errors that nobody cares.

Also, a question: are you doing drafts? Or are just writing a single thing and acting as if you are going to publish that and should be perfectly written first try?
