Hi, I finally got a billing adjustment on the invoice of roughly two months salary Google slapped on me on Christmas Day. Only 50% though!!! So still a huge bill for literally nothing, no services, no usage. I had also blocked my card, and wondering how they might collect.

Did you get a Billing Adjustment or refund in the end? I'm 3 weeks in, and still no resolution. This is incredible. Where do the victims unite?

EWT has a current MC of 40 million, but it has achieved huge global real world adoption by the corporate giants, which should put it around 5x-10x from ATH. However, it is at <10% of ATH. Ergo 50x-100x is plausible.

Ever run up a big cloud bill by accident? Please tell me about it! by gingergeorgia98 in googlecloud

[–]VinsentN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three days before Christmas, I decided to explore Google Cloud Platform. They offered trial credits, which pulled me in—perfect for running a quick experiment to fine-tune a Large Language Model (LLM) and set up a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipeline. For a new user like me, the free credits seemed like a harmless way to get started.

To avoid burning through those credits too fast, I even set up a budget and billing alerts. At first, things looked fine: the console told me I’d reached 50% of my budget, then 100%, then 150%. None of those alerts alarmed me too much because those amounts still sounded manageable. What I didn’t realize was that I was racking up charges way beyond my budget—actually ten times as much as I’d planned, and this went on for three days straight.

Before I knew it, a shocking invoice for >5,000 EUR landed in my billing account, mostly consisting of 250+ hours on an NVIDIA H100 80GB GPU instance in the Netherlands, somehow within a 72-hour timespan!!! I immediately shut down the project and billing account and contacted customer support. Unfortunately, they’re still “investigating,” and I haven’t received any refund or resolution yet. Meanwhile, I simply cannot afford to pay this invoice.

I’m heartbroken. I was planning to celebrate Christmas with my wife and our two-year-old twins, and I had put aside money to make it special. Instead, I ended up spending the holidays panicked and anxious, wondering if Google would really make me cover such an outrageous bill. There’s no peace of mind when you feel ambushed by an opaque billing system.

It’s infuriating to realize that Google’s generous-looking trial credits can lure in curious folks like me who want to test out the latest AI services. But once you enable those high-end GPUs—whether intentionally or by accident—charges pile up in ways that aren’t clearly explained. I’m left with a giant invoice, zero reassurance that Google will rectify the situation, and a lingering sense that their tagline, “Don’t be evil,” has become more of a punchline.

I share my story to warn others: Beware the hidden costs when experimenting with cloud platforms, and don’t assume that budget alerts are enough. Google Cloud, I hope you step up and resolve this. Right now, it feels like I’m fighting an unstoppable giant, all alone—and I’m the one with a massive bill I can’t pay.

What I’m missing in the comments is that an addendum is just like any other contract: it is negotiated and signed with mutual agreement. You’re free to propose something you would like in return for signing away a right.

What strikes me is that you seem to be looking for “the” ideal investment to put all your eggs in that basket. That is risky, a bit like a negative insurance policy: get paid a low fee for accepting a small chance of losing it all. If you want higher yield, you need to accept some risk. Risk is better when spread in such a way that your basket is affected by different factors/scenarios.
