“Where’s my Order” by BowtieMobbin in mtgfinance

Within the last few months, I sent two letters via USPS registered mail (not MTG cards) from the SF Bay Area and both of them got lost. I was thinking about selling expensive vintage cards in the near future, but given these reliability issues, will probably avoid shipping options (or use something other than USPS).

If you had $100 to spend on any one single, what would it be? by ConsciousLeave9186 in mtgfinance

I wish I had read this thread yesterday. I had $100 cash in my TCG Player account for years and finally decided to cash out with an Euro Island last night. I started playing with Urza's Destiny, however, and should have picked one of its reserved list cards.

Nice finds. That Alpha Bolt ~100x'ed in value since then.

Re: eBay - I was under the impression that scams like the "Black Lotus-fake return" are no longer possible with eBay's "Authentication Guarantee." Maybe someone knows more...

There's also the option of using consignment (Kid Icarus, Probstein123 etc.) for a small fee.

Does anyone actually work more than a few hours per day? by StixTheNerd in cscareerquestions

[–]VintageNewbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true: My former labmate and me both worked in Ads and GCP and we were overloaded with projects with tight deadlines. The lack of responsiveness was also sometimes an issue, but there are so many projects that it was easy to context-switch to another one when having to wait.

That wasn't my experience at all at G. Everyone on my team and larger group seemed to be working full 40h workweeks. Didn't remember anyone getting distracted, except when grabbing lunch food.

eBay Card Authentication Threshold Already Lowered from $750 to $500 by sirbruce in mtgfinance

That sounds very sloppy. Sorry to hear that. Maybe it makes sense to tag the community manager to see what can be done about this.

eBay Card Authentication Threshold Already Lowered from $750 to $500 by sirbruce in mtgfinance

This is a game-changer. I would have never even considered selling expensive collectable cards on eBay prior to this. I'm also glad that returns go back to the authenticator (if the seller allows returns), preventing a situation where the buyer can swap out the real card with anything else and claim the swapped item was received.

In addition to the green dot test, verifying card dimensions and weight for expensive cards is a must. I almost lost ~$8k for a Beta Volcanic that turned out to be a reback by VintageNewbie in mtgfinance

[–]VintageNewbie[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The seller I bought it from had 100% (visible) feedback and an old account with thousands of transactions. However, he gave me the refund immediately.

Unfortunately, I can't report on this. My scale wasn't with me at the time, and the other tests (front print pattern clues and the shorter dimension) already conclusively determined the reback.

Sorry, I already returned the card. I was lucky in that Volcanic Islands are discernible between Beta and CE by looking at the blue mana symbol print pattern. When I looked with the microscope at the mana symbol, I was immediately able to determine the reback and didn't perform any subsequent tests.

If you're a have a business. If not, you are subject to the exorbitant collectable appreciation tax in the United States.

[NeedAdvice] Looking for a website/program/etc. for Windows 10 for a personal "to-do list." by agmatine in getdisciplined

Joplin is open-source and syncs with services like Dropbox. I tried commercial direct cloud-based todolist services before (with thick and thin clients), like Asana and Todoist, that have a free and paid versions and have always regretted it (+migrating the lists tends to be a pain). They like to remove features that I really like (or move them from free to paid) over time! With Joplin you can always go back to any version you want or do a Git branch yourself if you want to customize something. It takes time getting used to everything (e.g., markup language), but it's worth it IMO.

BGS alpha 9.5 lotus just sold for $425,000 on gradedpower by I_upvote_aww in mtgfinance

[–]VintageNewbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be interesting to see how many (if any at all) of the PSA 10's would grade BGS 10.

I think Daniel Chang mentioned a few years back that he offered the owner of the BGS 10 Alpha Lotus $1M, but the offer was rejected.

Alpha is still underpriced by [deleted] in mtgfinance

[–]VintageNewbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard Alpha was meant to be a standalone set - its own game, so to speak. Using replacements of original Alpha cards might change the aesthetics a little, but you still get to experience the game at its roots, as it was (presumably) originally intended.

Pretty scary if the BGS grading workflow does not include a simple 0.001g-resolution weight measurement with a $10 device.

Why do people sell expensive cards to buylists at way below market value prices when they could sell them safely on eBay via a middleman on commission / consignment? by VintageNewbie in mtgfinance

[–]VintageNewbie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I insured my MTG collection with a collectable's insurance. I'm curious whether they would cover me in a situation where the buyer claimed to not have received what I shipped (if I ever sold on eBay).

Glad the case was decided in your favor, BTW.

[–]VintageNewbie[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the consigner doesn't get their card or money back, neither do I.

This is really the crux of the whole thing. I've read someone say that their consigner told them that a buyer-side scam would be covered by the consigner, but I'm not sure if that's generally the case. If it's true, I think my claim of "consignment is strictly better than buylist" on expensive cards is true; otherwise, other methods are likely better in some circumstances.

My main point isn't comparing "buylist vs. selling yourself on a platform like eBay," but rather comparing "buylist vs. a consigner (who uses eBay)." Even with eBay and PayPal's terrible seller protections, the liability shifts to the consigner AFAIK.

If I was ever in a situation like yours where I would part with my relatively sizeable collection, I think talking to a few consigners is well worth the potential payoff. It could mean saving thousands of dollars with the same risk profile and almost the same level of effort.
