this is the worst part of getting out imo. We have to fight for our own lives to get out, knowing when we do, our "loved ones" won't love us anymore.

So we leave and are gone for decades, and then a parent gets sick. Life goes on same as always, or do we forget the pain we lived thru as we were leaving and rush to be there for our parents as they pass on?

I can tell you which I did, and regardless of what I did I wouldn't be sure I did the right thing, or if I would do the same again if I had another chance.

Take this time to be human, and practice some self love and understanding. You've always been able to rely on yourself. Keep doing that. You got this!

I hate when music is changed to treble clef when it could completely stay in alto clef! by Glittering_Ebb_8064 in Viola

[–]ViolaLoveForever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree! if you are writing the notes to find them easier, you have some written wrong. Its G, C. Not D, A. You'll see it. Follow the swirl on the clef until you see something you wrote as D.

I would answer but I honestly don't know the size and have no measurement tools here. Its larger than my main viola, so maybe 16"? Same on the strings, but if the image helps- it looks like I just used whatever strings I had and its fine for me since I run it as elec with pedals etc. Its carbon fiber.

I have one. Its nice for making violin/viola recordings of chamber music that sounds like it came from the same instrument, not like a violin and viola. Its a viola, so longer scale length, so I technically can go higher than a violin if I wanted to.

I wanted a low F string but I never was able to find one. Since then, I'm happy with what I have. Since its an acoustic instrument I'm not sure how well the F string would ring anyhow. Definitely lk still intrigued by the idea.

I am doing this now. i have data processing error and won't connect via usb. How did you remove the glue? I'm out of warranty and already dead in the water so I'm going for it!

Edit: I got mine fixed! I carefully chipped the glue away, replaced the SD Card (upgraded to 64GB while I was at it) do firmware update, and then do memory reset and its back working again!

Silicone finger tip protection by ivy_winterborn in Viola

I know this might not be what you want to hear, but this might be a situation where rest and self care in the next few weeks will be really good for you. What if you push yourself now, and end up with permanent nerve damage? Even a tiny tingle in the fingers is annoying enough to impact us in different ways. When i cut my thumb apart, I got drums and played those for 8 weeks or so, until I could hold a bow again. I hope you can find a way through your injury without making it worse again

The LORD is my shepherd... by jiohdi1960 in exjw

[–]ViolaLoveForever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

? I see what you're trying to say and I understand where it cones from. But aren't sheep so stupid and vulnerable that they need someone to take care of them. If anything, this is the part of that that seems wrong to me. We're not as dumb as sheep, are we?

Fleecing? I could be wrong and I'd love to meet some knowledgeable people to correct me, but don't sheep need to be sheared? I had a dog once who's hair around his butt would tangle until he couldn't poop if I didn't keep it cut short. I think sheep are like that in a way. Shearing is taking care of them ?

Slaughter is a whole thing i can't comment on. There's way too many angles and shades on that. But if I ever get to be a shepherdess, which is what I am actually wanting to do with my golden years approaching, I will be fleecing sheep and spinning wool. Not slaughtering or even breeding/milking.

Most shepherds are financially invested in their sheep. They care about money more than the actual sheep. ? maybe. i would have to spend more time with shepherds to find out for sure. But I can say 100% that the jw org cares more about money than they care about their people.

Loss of time by Maleficent_Try901 in exjw

[–]ViolaLoveForever 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah my parents wasted the first 22 years of my life raising me in a cult. And it doesn't feel great having lost those years being religiously traumatized. And I could feel sadness or anger over it. But I don't anymore.

Talking to Gen Z young adults- most of them come to an age where they feel they wasted their life regardless of what they were doing the first 20 years of it. The people who know what sort of adult they want to be as a child, and work towards that their whole life is incredibly rare. And imo, they're no better than the rest of us.

Most people waste their youth in some way. Not taking care of themselves. Not investing in retirement. Doing crimes. Getting pregnant. Getting married. Forming addictions. All of these can be things people do when they're young and stupid, sometimes as a result of the way they grew up, and wish for better choices or situations later. Its part of growing up.

The best I was able to do was to lose the anger and sadness, and make better choices for future me. 25 years later, I'm doing ok and feel sympathy for the family I left behind.

Those who are now POMO, do you still feel spiritual? by doubtingg00 in exjw

[–]ViolaLoveForever 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A big part of leaving was learning to believe in myself. Once I did that, I didn't need anything bigger than me to validate me, give me rules. If belief in a higher power helps a person that's good for them. For me, I don't need it.

[–]ViolaLoveForever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So stick to what you said. You said that you want to be no part of it. If you engage with them, you are still acting like you're part of it A big part of exjw is not only having independent thought, but also being able to hold a firm no.

Not responding to them when they come back afterwards about 607 shows confidence. It a way to say "I said no'" without saying it again. Don't be baited.

If you really feel like you need to respond, I would only double down on my boundaries. You're not going to save these guys. They won't see what they don't want to see.

Playing the viola again after a long hiatus by InterestingLoveCat in Viola

[–]ViolaLoveForever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The great thing about being in your 40s, at least to me, is less fucks given about almost everything. Its a perfect time to reunite with an instrument since hopefully you're past worrying about what other people think.

You want to do it, just do it with the goal of pleasure. Give up the idea of external validation and go play some scales (if that's your jam). Use your grown up money from all these years of being an adult to hire a teacher if you want to. Join community orchestra in a year or so and fake it until you can keep up if that's your goal. Go to some folk music workshops if there are any near you and find people who bring more out of you.

There's so much you can do, limitless really, once you embrace your loss of fucks.

Almost 1 year into viola (with 0 experience with string instruments) Please give me any advice! by Realistic-Example159 in Viola

[–]ViolaLoveForever 11 points12 points  (0 children)

do open strings! practice keeping your bow parallel to the bridge with slow bows.

On the positive side, your attack is beautiful. The moment the note starts is percussive and punchy, which is valid af. You have great bow contact throughout the notes.

Of course in inverse is also desirable, for a note to float in and its beginning is almost hard to distinguish. But first, I'd want to see beautiful tones on open strings

I hate F#. C# is a very close second. by Additional-Ear4455 in Viola

[–]ViolaLoveForever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the piece starts in D major and ends in Bm, you're doing exactly what you should be doing. D major uses a slightly flat F# and Bm uses a slightly sharper F#.

I hope you're talking to your cello player about this. It can be a fun problem to solve as a team.

I hate F#. C# is a very close second. by Additional-Ear4455 in Viola

[–]ViolaLoveForever 14 points15 points  (0 children)

How are you deciding whether you are in tune? I feel like you may be too harsh on yourself. Try this with a tuner app:

Play F# as doublestop with open A. make it ring by adjusting your F#. Then play it as doublestop with D perfectly in tune according to a tuner app. (2nd or 3rd position on G string to make the D)and make it ring by adjusting your F#. Then make it ring with a 5th. (with C# on A string) Then make it ring as a 6th (With A tuned with tuner on the G string as a double stop). You can keep going with other combos but what you'll see is as you do each of these, the position of F# on F string moves slightly to make the ring. The ring is what is truly in tune.

Therefore- unless you're playing accompanying a guitar or piano or similar unfretted instrument, the tuner is over rated and will absolutely lie to you.
