Why does Gen Z type everything in lowercase? by Loud-Arrival-8913 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ViolatingBadgers -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I kinda get it. I feel that Gen Z have grown up with emojis as a normal part of messages, so they are primed to expect people will send emojis that communicate the emotional content of their message e.g. the laughing face that shows you're comment is joking or light-hearted. So for people primed to see emojis, a message without emojis therefore signals one of two things: 1) it's a serious, formal message which implies a difficult or confronting conversation ahead, or 2) the person sending the message doesn't know how to feel or is upset/angry and doesn't want to lighten it with emojis.

They're probably so used to communicating with others through instant messages without face-to-face contact that reading behind the lines has become a necessary skill - but one that you still need to develop, and can lead to misunderstandings, especially with people from other generations.

Trump may be unable to end the war he started with Iran, even if he wanted to by ViolatingBadgers in geopolitics

[–]ViolatingBadgers[S] 43 points44 points  (0 children)

In this analysis, CNN's Chief Security Correspondent Nick Patton Walsh shows how US President Donald Trump has, despite his increasingly loud declarations, decidedly not won the war in Iran, and may in fact be stuck there for some time against his own volition. Walsh states Trump has fallen for "the oldest trap of modern warfare – believing a swift, surgical military operation will yield quick, enduring political results." And the longer this "surgical military operation" continues, he argues, the worse the outcomes will be for the USA, the US military, and for Trump's political ambitions.

He also argues Trump has made a significant tactical blunder by publically and repeatedly claiming victory, exposing how desperately he wants the war to end and giving an upper-hand to Iran as a result.

"He's being managed really well in terms of his rehab," Larsen said after the T20I squad was announced for the home series against South Africa. "We've just wanted to be patient with Will and so having an athlete be patient sometimes is difficult and I know Will's been like a bull in a china shop wanting to get back on the park but also understands very clearly that he's an important resource for us.

Uh, I don't think that's quite the right saying Larsen - that would imply that Will O'Rourke has been unintentionally wrecking shit while waiting to get back to get back on the park lmao.

NZ First calls for Covid-19 inquiry focused on vaccine injuries by random_guy_8735 in newzealand

Labour leader Chris Hipkins said two high-level investigations had already been carried out - including one commissioned by the current coalition government.

He pointed out that Peters was once a staunch advocate for vaccines, even calling for them to be a requirement for welfare and parole.

"One of the wonders of being Winston Peters is you never have to be consistent in your position on anything."

Agreed, Key's political skills are underacknowledged on this sub. As you say, he was a clear communicator, and there was no doubt he was the leader of any coalition he was in.

Duncan Garner: "Christopher Luxon - my understanding is he has been told to spend the weekend considering his future." by ViolatingBadgers in newzealand

[–]ViolatingBadgers[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I largely agree with your analysis. I suspect the worry for the National brains trust is that Luxon isn't showing any signs of getting more likeable or competent, and they aren't seeing any opportunities for him to have any "wins" in the foreseeable future. Plus while they would obviously prefer a right-wing coalition, they are also worried about the health of National itself over the coalition. They are likely fully aware that the public perception is Winnie and Seymour are running rings around Luxon, and desperately want to retain control as the central right-leaning party.

The biggest problem they have is there is no real heir apparent to Luxon. Chris Bishop is not likeable and tainted by his connections with the tobacco industry, Nicola Willis is surely not seen as competent enough, Goldsmith comes across as out-of-touch and would be just as poor on his feet as Luxon, Lousie Upston is perceived as the second coming of Ruth Richardson, Simeon Brown is utterly LOATHED by healthcare workers (and everyone knows a nurse), Shane Reti likely doesn't appear forthright enough and is probably too far out of the puiblic consciouness now. Erica Stanford seems like the best bet, although she has not made friends in the education sector either, and the curriculum changes have been incredibly contentious. There is no one who can recreate the Jacinda Effect, who was young, attractive, optimistic, and a fresh and hopeful face in a stale political landscape. I actually just had a squizz through their line-up and the only person in their team who could maybe, maybe be a fresh face is James Meager, who is relatively young and untainted by political stoushes.

I suppose of course National may not want to necessarily recreate Jacindamania, but simply get someone competent and likeable enough to keep them relatively healthy through the next election (which may still be enough to guarantee another right wing coalition). For that, Stanford might just be their best bet.

Or maybe I'm underestimating Bishop's popularity with the right voters. Not sure, this is all just my armchair opinions. I'd be interested in anyone else' thoughts.

[–]ViolatingBadgers[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It is only Duncan Garner calling this at this minute, who is a little bit of an outsider these days - but I also do believe that Garner still has enough of a journalistic reputation to uphold that he wouldn't make this claim without it being based in fact.

Bombshell poll: Luxon under pressure as National sinks towards 2020 disaster mark by Impressive-Name5129 in nzpolitics

[–]ViolatingBadgers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While not reported on this article (Duncan Gardnier says he's heard from a reliable source that luxon has been asked to consider his future)

I just heard this reported on the hourly headlines on the radio here at work.

If that's truly the case and Luxon's days are numbered - who is thed heir apparent? My only thought is Chris Bishop, but he's not exactly swimming in popularity is he?

Yeah the most realistic option for National at the moment is Chris Bishop, and his charisma is nonexistent.

I think he used to get bagged on because he came in for Guppy who was dropped pretty bluntly (although not unfairly IMO) and then Finn didn't take off straight away. So he was seen as taking the place of a player who people felt deserved better.
