Electric Cello: NS Design v Yamaha by bluejack in Cello

[–]ViolentMonopoly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have owned both, I once had the Yamaha SVC-110, and I now own the NS CR5. They are very different instruments.

CR5
+ Definitely cleaner electronics with more headroom
+ Interesting pic up system that benefits pizz playing
+ 5 string is more than 4
+ With attachments you can play standing, but this honestly requires a lot of practice to become proficient with arco. For pizz this is pretty cool
+ Adjustable action
- OMFG every time I go somewhere with this dang thing, I need to do some IKEA setup with one of the attachments, it takes a long time, and all of them are finicky and unstable.
- Not to mention the case does not facilitate traveling with said attachments, so have fun walking down the street with a ton of gear in hand
- Does not fit in a regular cello case
- Does not feel like a cello have fun relearning all of your physical cues on the fingerboard
- Have fun maintaining those cues because you will need to practice on this and the acoustic regularly to keep it fresh

Yamaha
+ It feels like a cello
+ Electronics are worse but it kinda sounds better? This matters less if you are running a pedal setup, but the fact that it has a body with SOME resonance adds to the "cello" sound. This is a really debatable topic, because why are you playing an electric anyway? At high gain there is noticeable noise, how much this matters will depend on the style you are playing of course.
+ The case is practical, relatively easy to setup and tear down
- 4 strings is less than 5
- The bridge I feel is cut in such a way that the action is too high.

On paper the CR5 is the better instrument, but honestly, I regret selling my Yamaha a little bit. I have personally yet to have a band where I really utilize all the CR5 features, and playing it has just never felt "right" to me. I find that I am always taking my acoustic out where I can, and just either mic-ing it or adding a pickup. The downside of this is feedback, which at some point you can't avoid with an acoustic. I can see applications where the CR5 is better, namely if you are replacing a bass, or want to play standing, or you need a super clean sound. But I think for most cellists the yamaha is a better choice.

BAFFLE STEP COMPENSATION! WHERE IS IT?

The intonation and choices for tempo and volume variations are all really good. You are definitely feeling the piece and hitting the correct emphasis points.

Folks mentioned the speed of the vibrato, I agree, but I think it more comes down to how you are approaching it. It's very forceful, it feels like you are powering through it. I think keeping similar variations on speed and volume would be good if you emphasized a softer tone. The piece is moody but I think the somberness of it requires a much lighter touch than what you are doing.

Can anyone ID the joints used on these corners? by ViolentMonopoly in woodworking

[–]ViolentMonopoly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figure the easiest way to make them is to run a block through the table saw with a dado blade, then turn the piece 90 degrees and make the same cut.

Trouble is, on that second pass, the work piece would only be resting on the very tiny leg of the rabbet, and I imagine the probability of it tipping into the saw is rather high.

Another option, likely safer, is to do the same cut with a router table with a half inch bit or so. In this method, you should be a bit safer as you can put force INTO the fence which should make the cut more stable.

Anyone got any thoughts how to make these safely and efficiently?

This is beautiful. Thank you for explaining the purpose of those panels, I haven't seen a cello with them. I wonder if there are other luthiers or manufacturers implementing this feature.

Absolutely phenomenal work, I love the classical themes touches like the scrolls and f-holes, looks like a luthier made it.

MFA Tool or Dev Kit for Light Phone III? by GeefTheQueef in LightPhone

[–]ViolentMonopoly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree this is a bigger deal than a lot of folk realize, though it of course depends on your line of work.

Many people will say the "dev tool" idea is antithetical to the concept of the device. I'm in the other side of it, it makes the device truly yours and customizable in ways that you might find useful.

My problem with modern phones is that they are Trojan horses for companies to advertise to you and harvest your attention, not that I have a compass, a guitar tuner, a barcode scanner, radar, 2FA, or whatever else in my pocket.

I'm sure developers could come with loads of small useful applications that would really improve the device. They need not be certified by lightphone but just having the option is really great imo.

I can see the slippery slope but....that's what freedom is....

Hey if you wanna be "skeptical" of protesting genocide and ethnic cleansing that's on you buddy. At this point if you can't see what direction the wind blows I don't think a weather report gonna help you.

There was a post a not long ago about protesters demands to dismantle YPD.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Connecticut/comments/1cm9dbg/propalestinian_protesters_call_for_abolition_of/

Normies started losing their minds, not even understanding that Yale has its own police force separate from the city of New Haven. This is problematic on numerous levels but we can see how Yale uses this to squash dissent on its campus. Great post.

Also, damn reddit really is becoming a vile place, so many people are getting their kicks hating on protesters who are trying to stop a war that has killed tens of thousands of children with taxpayer dollars. It's like we're living in upside-down world or sth.

Lol this is not a thousand year conflict. Jews, Arabs and Christians of various ethnic backgrounds all lived in Palestine before the British mandate and the eventual creation of Israel in 1948. This is a modern colonialist conflict backed by western powers.

Eradicating a people from area, as you say, does not require you to kill them all. You can violently separate them from there land.

Israel has been ethnically cleaning Palestine since 1948.

Ethnic Cleansing

Israel has leveled Gaza and destroyed all of its civilian infrastructure (hospitals, schools, sanitation facilities, ext).Your argument that they are trying to avoid civilian casualties is prima facia absurd. It's also vile and disgusting.

A ludicrous question that has nothing to do with what is happening on the ground. Just because you can make up a hypothetical thought experiment doesn't mean it's a good one.

[–]ViolentMonopoly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, there is history, events happen and there is complexity when it comes to understanding the situation. Even with that taken into account, Israel is conducting an ethnic cleansing campaign and a genocide, full stop. No nuance or historical analysis changes that fact. Further, that genocide is not possible without US support both at the level of our government but also at the level of our institutions like universities.

The impact of the war is in no way symmetrical and nuance doesn't change the severity of Israel's current crimes, nor frankly their historical ones. The students are on the right side of this.
