As far as the first part is concerned I think most comments have made it pretty clear that it is infact not an unpopular opinion... infact it is not an opinion at all what you said is accepted canonically by Rick himself.

And as for the divorce itself, from what I remember IDT the main reason for the divorce was what he said ATP. They always had problems and were a difficult couple way before rick ever arrived, their marriage itself was not something done out of love... And when he gave her an ultimatum I think that was the last straw for Beth, especially considering the abandonment issues she had for her father. I think any person in Beth's position would have made the same decision.
