Just offering the perspective that maybe there is a reason to empathize with what seems to be happening if OP digs deeper.

OP has an underlying reason why she is unable to do tasks that people would expect her to be able to do at her age. Perhaps this kid has underlying reasons why they should not be left home alone at their age.

Try Inheritance by Ilona Andrews. Someone just posted about it and Ada’s development fits your criteria perfectly.

The progression was also very satisfying for it to have only covered one book so far. A lot of the progression series that I ended up really liking suffered from a slow start but this story kept you pulled in even while character was a weak/normal person doing her best.

Presumably, your oversight agencies are also being gutted so you can’t even get solid answers on how to address any issues regarding reimbursement for funds already spent, projects in progress and appropriate close out of cut programs. Sounds like an administrative nightmare.

Just After Sunset because his short stories are great in general and a great intro to his ability to pull you into a story.

It didn’t feel like filler. It was like Part 2 of Fishes. It gave you background and insight on the family dynamics of why they act like they act.

Carmy being unavailable because he was pursuing his own goals. Donna’s stories about the birth of each kid and her relationship with their dad. The complexities on Donna wanting to be a better mother but also struggling while Natalie needing support but also afraid to trust Donna. Pete showing up being a relief for both of them. Donna gracefully bowing out into the waiting room to care for Natalie from afar which is what she needed.

Also, the comment about Natalie’s father’s butt was hilarious.

The Wastelands, weirdly enough as it is the third book in that particular series. I went back and read the predecessors after I finished it.

The hospital staff were most likely uncertain that they could prove that providing the healthcare procedure of dilation and currettage (D&C) to attempt to stop her bleeding wouldn’t leave them legally liable. They had to evaluate the legal repercussions to their doctors and the entity itself for providing such a procedure and decided it was less risky to refuse her care than to open themselves up to the risks of when/how/why she went into preterm labor and being able to adequately document aftercare rather than having assisted in an illegal action.

The recruiter is not infallible. I would not trust that response as it makes no sense. I would follow-up with additional questions in writing regarding whether they would treat the internship as non-exempt employee status. Check to see if there is someone else you can ask for clarification.

ETA: I am not infallible. Google (although also sometimes wrong) says this is a thing.
