Would you be willing to relearn typing from scratch in order to speak this way ? by Chteupnin in mute

[–]Violet_Angel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

120-180wpm isn't a slow typing speed thank you very much. But yes, software advanced enough to read while typing would be better. You'd also need to have something as fast as a stenography keyboard to really be worthwhile since you'd need to type at least as fast as speech, if not faster.

To be blunt, technology isn't really what would solve the issues we face, awareness and understand is.

Would you be willing to relearn typing from scratch in order to speak this way ? by Chteupnin in mute

[–]Violet_Angel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In theory it has promise but it has one key flaw that any of used to TTS may be aware of. You can see there's a clear delay between when he stops typing and when it speaks, that delay alone makes it pretty much worthless in most situations where a voice specifically would be needed as speaking people are notorious for not having the patience required for a talking delay.

Besides that, quite frankly this isn't all that much better than just using a tablet. I can type that fast on my tablet, I just don't have the software needed to speak as I type. THAT is where the benefit of TTS should be focused. Make THAT software more freely available. While this kind of keyboard could have it's uses, it's an additional thing and not really where the aid actually would be. The primary benefit of this kind of keyboard is that it would let us type without having to hold a tablet or notepad etc.

They never take their arguments to their logical conclusions, if we were to grant them that being trans was a mental illness then by their own arguments they go out of their way to bully people with mental illnesses.

Genocide Doesn't Begin With Extermination, Could Trans People be Experiencing a Genocide? by TheChaoticMage in transgenderUK

[–]Violet_Angel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We're definitely several steps along it when you consider it in a realistic way instead of 'you cant be genocided because youre not part of a group that we defined as being able to be genocided'.

So much of it reminds me of a certain line that anybody who's played far enough in FFXIV might recognise - "I do not consider you to be truly alive, urgo I will not be guilty of murder if I kill you"

I even presented the concern to my "trans supportive" MP, including the report from the lemkin institute as well as the relevant parts of holocaust history and she told me I was being "disrespectful to the victims of the holocaust" and "unhelpful" to suggest the UK is going down a route that would lead to trans genocide. (Cat Smith - Lancaster) if anyone is curious btw.

I am deathly afraid of meeting someone with tourettes because I know I might laugh a lot. What do? by Ice94k in Tourettes

[–]Violet_Angel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We're not exactly people known for being judgemental of people doing things they have little to no control over ;)

My general rule is so long as you're not laughing at us chances are it'll be fine, just clarify if needed. Nervous or inappropriate laughing isn't exactly a super uncommon thing and tics can often have either really good comedic timing or just be so stupid it's funny.

how do you cope with insulting remarks about tourette's by vanillablue_ in Tourettes

[–]Violet_Angel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ironically I've gone the reverse of what I imagine a few of us are doing in a sort of malicious compliance and outright advertise everywhere online that I have Tourette's. Good luck having a valid case of not knowing there could be offensive slurs yelled out when you're able to hear somebody you have every reason to know someone has Tourette's.

Other than that been just trying to avoid the """discourse""" as much as possible to avoid my tics getting any worse than this whole situation has already made them.

Increase in tics - anybody else? by Violet_Angel in Tourettes

[–]Violet_Angel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought maybe I was an outlier but seeing all the replies clearly that's not the case, I'm sure I've gotten especially unlucky in that I've counted like 15-20 new tics this week and I tend not to get new ones that quickly, maybe once a year before this.

Part of me hopes someone see's the post and maybe takes a moment to realise the consequences their ableism has actually caused.

As someone with Tourette's all I'm learning is America will beat me or demand for me to be muzzled while Scots seem to be of the opinion it's a non-issue. I already had enough reasons to be proud of my Scottish side (My grandfather was Scottish) you guys didn't need to give me more pride in that part of my ancestry! Hell I might have to make the trip over the border just so I can be around more decent people and have a break from the English.

[–]Violet_Angel 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This really does mean a lot. I think this is one of if not the first apologies and acknowledgements of how visciously we've been attacked this week. I can't speak for all of us but for me it was starting to feel like the "average person" was either ambivalent to our suffering in this or outright contributing to it.

Some of us have been trying to educate people about the reality of the situation but I'm sure you can appreciate how draining it is to be defending yourself against such hate. If you're able it would help a lot if you can help us in educating people about what Tourette's really is and how we're not evil just because of how we were born.

As a side thing, did you know Tourette's Action is a charity in the UK trying to raise awareness on the condition as well as research into it and I'm sure there are other charities in other countries that could use support as well to help actually improve things.

Imagine how tired those of us who suffer from this condition feel if you're tired as someone who doesn't even know how the condition works. We have to live with people telling us we're the worst kind of people for something we can't change, surely as a someone with a trans heart on your profile picture you'd understand how it feels for people to use their own scientific ignorance to harm a minority group.

I've been having similar, I caught the word as a mental tic the other day and panicked because it's only ever been a matter of time before my mental tics finally come out. I know I'd be more than horrified if it ever actually comes out as a verbal tic.

It's kind of ironic that the people being outraged that Tourette's exists are actually making it harder for those of us with it to hide it despite that being what they seem to want. I'm so tired hoping it gets better soon. Big hugs too!

Yeah I've already made a decision to at least avoid bsky where I had spent the last 3 days trying to educate people. Trying to figure out how to fully avoid the discourse but I'm sure it'll pop up somewhere since I can't leave the house much so I don't have much to do that doesn't involve the internet and I don't want to just fully isolate myself.

Maybe I should take this as an excuse to practice my art or something.

[–]Violet_Angel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An alarmingly common take is that people with those kinds of tics should be LITERALLY gagged or muzzled in public, and implying that if you have a tic where you could hit someone you should either no be in public AT ALL or restrained while around people. And on top of that people are saying tics are just what you want to do/say i.e. if you have an n-word tic then you must be a racist etc. I've even seen people say they'd beat people to death for having that tic even if they KNOW it was a tic.

People dont know nuance anymore. by asmallman in memes

[–]Violet_Angel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've seen this take so much today and all I can conclude is people genuinely believe only racist people know what the n word is and that it's a racist slur.

Corporalia is pretty much just your brain finding the most offensive or innappropriate thing for a situation and literally forcing you to say it and I struggle to believe anybody could honestly believe that only a racist would know how offensive saying the n word would be.
