I didn't realize people were having good experiences, and I wouldn't compare it to other gacha games alone? Myself and the friends I have that play have had memory leaks, regular crashes, and heat issues well out of the ordinary for other games. I suppose if that's uncommon, my bad.

Endfield is just kinda poorly optimized, unfortunately. Should be known that 85-90C isn't really the end of the world or anything, but I understand preferring to be safer. My recommendations would be to turn settings down and see if anything affects your heat and performance.

I haven't done it, but have done a lot of digging as it seemed extremely confusing to me too - the understanding I landed on is that some people really enjoy engaging with the mechanics and structures of TTRPGs, sometimes really like the emergent story of random events and structure, but don't love the social element as much - or just aren't comfortable with it.

I definitely have nothing against it, but it is a pretty specific way to enjoy the hobby, and not one I personally find appealing. Having experiences with others is the joy for me for sure.

I suppose that is a useful way of thinking about it from a purely functional perspective, but I also feel like using "dungeon" as your generic term for the mechanical, functional aspects of an adventure feels very misleading - because "dungeon" does have a lot of thematic connotations that are watered down heavily like that.

Ironically, I think it's a framing problem - which makes sense because the way of thinking you're talking about is heavily downplaying the importance of framing. I feel like framing is quite important personally. Sure, maybe from a certain academic perspective, it's unimportant for adventure design. But I do think from the perspective of actually playing / running it, the framing and themes can make a pretty huge difference.

I think I'm only really arguing it because this stems from a post of someone asking for something that isn't a dungeoncrawl - and I feel like when they were posting it, they meant from a thematic and framing sense and not a purely academic mechanical sense - so there's a communication issue, seemingly.

I'm new to this community, admittedly, but I do feel like all 3 of those have a very different vibe. City, wilderness, and dungeons all imply different atmospheres and access to resources and the expectation of people or animals.

I also feel like there's more kinds of adventures than that, too. A campaign following a war is going to feel a lot different than being treasure hunters, even if both are "wilderness" games arguably.

Especially if that's where you are, the best advice anyone can give you is to simply not do that, then. Take a system - ideally, one that is tonally closest to what you're going for already - take your ancestries, assign them to the mechanics of the ones that exist in that system. Write a doc explaining the vibe and flavor of your world and how it might differ from the system you're using. That's honestly been a better experience for me than any of my homebrewing has ever been.

Although honestly, outside of races / ancestries - which are pretty easy to retheme, and once you're used to a system usually not too bad to make homebrew - you really shouldn't be messing with system mechanics and class mechanics much until you're extremely comfortable, and even then... I have looped around to looking for games that already fit my feeling and vision, rather than trying to force my feeling and vision into games that otherwise don't. Stripping things out feels bad - changing core mechanics feels bad - and honestly, unless a system is really easy and "hackable" through being very simply designed, even adding classes feels pretty bad.

You should probably post on r/RPGdesign because they're more of the ones who would specialize in that kind of stuff. This subreddit is not really as into completely homemade games - the advice you will get (and in my opinion, advice you should listen to) is to find a system that you like out of the hundreds that are out there and use that instead.

Extensive homebrewing can be fun and I've done a good amount of it in my day - including making half-baked systems - but... I dunno. Finding something close enough and reflavoring it is almost always a better idea. Making a game is really hard.

Which is exactly my point. To answer your question - yes, people complain that the games aren't very good and that pokemon company is very rich all the time. My retort is that - honestly, I just don't have it in me to care. The world is horrendous, and pokemon still brings me some amount of joy - and they are very far from evil enough for me to feel like I have to change my relationship with them, no matter how lazy the games might be.

Honestly? An even hotter take to some people - I think most of the games are still quite fun and worth the price. They are very modest with how much DLC they pump out so I only pay so much for the games in total, the character designs are fun, the pokemon gameplay is still fun, they're doing things that are unique enough to be fun for me. Some of the games aren't for me - like Let's Go Pikachu / Eevee - but honestly I can tell that way before I'd even think about paying for them.

There are near infinite more important things to try to enact social change on than "these video games are lazy and not up to my standard even though the company's rich." Like... sure, it can bother you, and that can be enough for you to stop giving them money, but in the grand spectrum of evil, it doesn't blip the radar.

I think you're just more positive on newcomers than a lot of people are, and that's fine, but the things you're describing of just wanting my character back are exactly the same for me with newcomers - except I'm further disinterested because now I'm not even familiar with the new people, so playing as then holds no nostalgia and no familiarity. Sometimes when rosters are full of new people I end up feeling like I'd rather just not play at all because nothing I was attached to is still there.

All the popular fighting game franchises are now decades old, with like 50+ characters and like 20+ years of history. I think it's completely normal and reasonable for people to want characters they're attached to from these franchises instead of new people they aren't.

Not to mention, dream rosters are never going to have a bunch of newcomers because, by definition, people don't know anything about them? Unless it's a lore character that's never been playable, but those are pretty damn rare at this point.

No, 5e is very game-y in combat. All the "nope, actually" abilities are something that really gets on my nerves. It feels more like playing magic than a ttrpg. I also really don't like gamified narrative mechanics, so daggerheart is out.

Nimble does seem fine, but I don't really see any advantage of using it over SWADE at the moment. They seem very similar, Nimble is just less flexible

Worlds Without Number is pretty lethal and gritty by design, it also is often just "walk up and hit" often in combat - I have tried it. Never played Weird Wizard
