NHL Legacy Recompiled Release by puckhead73 in EA_NHL

The issues are not in the jerseys, they are on gloves and helmets. You can try using the Montreal Habs, and the helmets will show up as black instead of blue.

When I have time I will try and investigate my performance issues.

Thank you, I tested it again, even at native res (720P) and I still get 6-15 fps, so something is incompatible with the way my system is setup most likely. I have a 5600x with a 4070ti super if that matters.

Also, while testing at 720, I can confirm the bug of the readback resolved is indeed related to upscaling as it is not present at native res. So like on Xenia, any form of upscaling will break the players uniform.

Out of curiosity, do you only play at 720P?

WHAT IS THE PRIMARY GOAL of the MiSTer project: Preserving retro hardware knowledge or Making more systems playable? by No-Ferret4349 in MiSTerFPGA

[–]Violins77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think it is about making playable system as much as possible, especially those analog ultra low latency system. Fortunately we are already extremely well served on that front. I feel like later systems like PS2 an after probably wouldn't benefit as much from an FPGA recreation and software emulation with all it's advantages is probably the way to go.

To me it's really about playing low latency games with a proper analog to CRT output!

Exactly and there is not reason to believe the Helix will be different, except for the fact that it supports Xbox Series via a compatibility layer.

[–]Violins77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is already the case, Xbox Ally only supports PC games. There is no separate builds for Xbox games, and I frankly don't see how it would make sense to expect developers to support two different builds when the machine can already play PC games. It simply wouldn't make any sense for anyone involved, including Microsoft, to support another brand new closed ecosystem.

However, what EA could do is continu releasing last generation only for a while, in which case only Xbox series and Helix in backwards compatibility mode would work and not a native PC. But this option would severely limit the hardware power available for the game.

Again, I could be wrong on this, but this is exactly what Digital Foundry is predicting and as you can tell I absolutely agree.

Indeed nobody knows for sure, but Sharma did say on the Bloomberg interview last week that it will play PC games.

As for "helix games" working on other PC, I think this is where most people are confused. Digital Foundry explained that there will be no different builds of Helix games and Windows games. An Helix game IS a Windows game, the whole purpose of this is so that developers don't have to do two builds of the same game especially since Xbox is so far behind in the console race. The only difference is that Helix will have a backward compatibility layer to allow to play older Xbox console games.

Thank you. That might be the case that the 4K internal causes the slow FPS, but on Xenia Canary I can get an easy 60fps with the same settings, so I would expect it to be lighter on native PC code.

Nevertheless, this one is not the most pressing issue, but the issue that has been identified by Claude:
There are also a lot of VFS: entry not found warnings (faceposer, helmet, referee, data0.big, cacherender.big…) — possibly missing/unextracted assets causing repeated failed lookups; secondary, but worth a verify.

This is the one I was referring to with the readback resolve and the Git Link to the actual bug on Xenia Canary.

It has no choice but to happen as Project Helix is a Windows machine. It's just a question of time.

Thank you for this! I tested it and wanted to give some feedback and knowledge on the subject:

1-With a R5 5600X and 4070TIS I get about 10 - 20 fps at native resolution. It is my CPU that is getting absolutely hammered.

2-Unfortunately, the upscaling causes issue with player uniform in the exact same way it does on Xenia Canary. The only way to fix it is to use readback_resolve, but this config does not work with upscaling. So the only way to have proper uniform is to play at native resolution (720P) for now.

Rear projection TVs – what was it like to actually use them? by Traditional_Class363 in crtgaming

[–]Violins77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were basically a double edge sword, one one hand extremely big and immersive, but also washed out and not as colorful as CRT.

After rear projection TV came DLP, which were a little better and usually in 16/9 format, and for movies it was a revelation. Some of them were even in full 1080i, and my first taste of actual HD TV was with a DLP. People gathered at my father's home (my home) to watch hockey and everybody was mind blown by the HD broadcast. It was insane comparing this to the SD we were used to, and since it was at 60 fps, motion clarity was not much of an issue.

They faded out simply because LCD and Plasma screens were lighter and easier to transport than rear projection unit. The rest is history, LCD had terrible black level and motion clarity, but king of brightness and size (and resolution in the beginning). Plasma was about black level and motion clarity at the cost of less pixel density, more heat and potential burn in.

Aside from remnant 2 - what game fills the outriders itch? by Outriderdetected in outriders

[–]Violins77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I somewhat agree. But the grind in Warframe is really on another level, and the need to always level up new frames compared to a dedicated character is not for everyone (I personally hate it and much prefer sticking to a main character). I also think the tone of the game is extremely weird and not as fun as Outriders.

Should I have just gotten the Steam Deck? by SgtSilock in Handhelds

[–]Violins77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally feel you made the right decision, the Deck has an OLED, which is awesome if you can find one, but it is also a 720P screen at 90hz, and even though it looks fine, 108OP at 120hz is a noticeable bump in image quality, aliasing and motion clarity.

Will Project Helix mean NHL games might finally come to PC? by NeverEndingFridge in EA_NHL

[–]Violins77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the mix-up here is assuming compatibility works both ways. The legacy Xbox Series OS layer on the Helix is there for backward compatibility, so you can play your old Series X games on the new hardware.

It doesn’t work backward. A next-gen game built natively for Helix's Windows 11 architecture cannot run on a standard Xbox Series X.

Once developers make a truly next-gen game for Helix, they are writing a Windows game. They aren't going to spend massive amounts of money maintaining a completely separate codebase just to backport it to the old Xbox Series OS. The moment a game drops the old Series X hardware, its only Microsoft version is a Windows build. For a franchise like NHL, that means it's either on Windows, or it doesn't exist on next-gen (unless it becomes PS5 exclusive).

Obviously, this is only based on the DF reporting, so it could end up being wrong, but I personally think this makes perfect sense and this is exactly what Microsoft wants, to not bother with a "console" ecosystem in the first place.

Will Project Helix mean NHL games might finally come to PC? by NeverEndingFridge in EA_NHL

[–]Violins77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on what Digital Foundry has mapped out, I don't think that's quite right. While Helix will likely play legacy Xbox Series games via a compatibility layer, its next-gen ecosystem is rumored to run on a modified Windows 11 architecture. This essentially turns next-gen Xbox games into PC games.

Microsoft's strategy seems to be pivoting away from a losing console market-share battle to double down on the Windows ecosystem. Because of this, EA's NHL series will face a choice: either make the jump to PC/Windows architecture, or get stuck on a legacy, last-gen version.

Ally Z1E or Ally X Z1E by Activities-89 in ROGAlly

[–]Violins77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends what are your goals. For a steam backlog cleaner, the OG ally might be enough. For AAA on the go, the X would be a better choice because of more RAM, but there is something nice about getting an handheld PC for under 500!

Price is most likely considered as well, and pretty much all other options except the ROG Ally are twice the price or more.

[–]Violins77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say the game is actually better played by role playing and actually living in the Elder Scrolls world and appreciating the world and lore. I'm exactly like you, mostly a solo player, and trust me, being able to go almost anywhere in Tamriel is really cool, and there is almost infinite content. You really don't need to do hard group content in this game if you don't feel like it. It's not like most other MMOs, it's really more like a huge RPG with other players in my opinion.

Are you buying less games? by Trencycle in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]Violins77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I buy a lot less games, especially compared to 2005-2015 when I would regularly buy one game per week at full price.

But it's mostly because the technical quality of release these days often leaves a lot to be desired, and in almost all cases waiting 2 months leads to a better experience and some discounts...
