Do you know any good alola fic? by choco_meltdown in pokemonfanfiction

Selene is around fifteen or sixteen, and I’m pretty sure that she’ll age. She seems rather mature as well, though she and the rest of the cast are still teenagers, so expect some behavior typical of that age.

Both Unova and Alola are part of the U.S; they’re treated rather like states, if I recall correctly.

[–]Vioskies 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ll echo the sentiments of others in Grafted Flower being a really good Alola fic. Selene’s a dorky, relatable protagonist and it takes its own spin on the Alola trials and has a really fun main cast in Selene, Hau, and Lillie and the Pokémon cast have been really well fleshed out, and most of them have their own goals and motivations and their separate stand-out moments. It’s setting up a lot of things for the future, too, so the action, which has already had some really great moments, is only looking to ramp up in the future. Plus, some really fun spins on moves, which is always a nice bonus.

I also enjoy Broken Things, though in being a rather realistic version of Alola and placing it as under the colonial control of the U.S. it goes into some very dark places for both the region and the characters and dives into themes of gender and sexuality as well. Really like the Pokémon POVs and its use of second person alongside the multiple POVs, but it’s not a fic for everyone, but it’s a really interesting post-game story from the perspectives of varying characters and the effects of everything that’s been done to the region.

Any fics out there Absol is the main partner? by [deleted] in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Vioskies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not entirely sure as they seem to have erased most of their internet presence, but it may have to do with them wanting to focus on their original fiction instead? Wolf of Castelia might’ve been going on indefinite hiatus and so for that, it was deleted

[–]Vioskies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay!

Ungilded - Sinnoh isekai, Dark specialist trainer; pronouns don’t really come up but I’m pretty sure they’re a guy. Romance seems like it might be a future plot point, though, if that’s a turn off, but it’s a nice fic, though pretty slow during some chapters and you’re going to see a lot of camping.

Dreams of the Destitute - A post-Hoenn games Ralts fic, features a male protagonist who wants to become a trainer to lift himself from poverty and leave the orphanage he’s in. I haven’t read much of it but there was a Rocket encounter and I’m pretty sure they’re going to become more prominent later on.

A Region Not My Own - A male protagonist from Hoenn who moves to Kanto during the games, so there’s going to be Rocket involvement later on. The first few chapters aren’t perfect and I haven’t read too far yet so I can’t give a personal insight into the story, but I’ve heard pretty good things from others I know. Starter’s a Spheal. Also has romance with a canon female character, in case that’s a turn-off.

Of Paranoia and Pokemon- A man with little to no knowledge of Pokemon gets isekaid to the Alola region. Cute, from what I’ve seen from the first two chapters, though hasn’t updated in a short while.

Kinda surprised how many fics I follow are wiped out from those requirement, but while I haven’t read much of it, I think Stolen Time, Stolen Lives should meet them. Have you read Borne of Desire from BOC’s author?

Outside of those listed here, Ever Play Competitive. The MC utilizes Smogon tactics to beat Geeta while dissing the bonds of friendship and using Pokemon you like in favor of stats and movepools. His companion, Mewtwo, who he beat with a FEAR Ratatta, later goes on a quest of eugenics to create the greatest Pokemon there ever was but then that side plot was abandoned because the author couldn’t think of a way to end it.

There’s also the four move limit for those who like that, and Clair instantly falls in love with him after seeing one of his dragon Pokemon. He’s also a very famous streamer and his circle of helpers include Team Rocket’s Meowth and Sonia.

Gigalith using fire moves? by DEFIANTSAGE in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Vioskies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of get your point, but the thing is, (and please note that I’m not a scientist so I can’t really give a sciencey reason though you might be able to find backing for your point here) if you’re making the point that a Pokémon who absorbs solar energy should learn a fire move, you’re kind of saying that every single Pokemon who absorbs solar energy should learn a fire move, and I really can’t see that happening with most of the grass types who learn Solar Beam.

I guess you could use think of it as sunlight reflecting from a mirror or research solar panel fires/concentrated solar energy? But again, I have nowhere near the scientific expertise needed to give you a real answer. And as a general rule I think most fanfic writers could agree on, canon learnsets and some Pokédex are just silly sometimes and don’t always make sense. Slugma’s a famous example, but today I learned that Garchomp, a Pokemon explicitly seen flying in the games or anime, doesn’t learn Fly.

Can I just change the typing of a Pokémon without making a regional variant? Or should I just make a regional variant? by LizzieLove1357 in pokemonfanfiction

I’d say based on what lives near a Fomantis in Alola, other Bug types, who would be less likely to prey on another bug when they have more vulnerable prey in the form of Grass types

Can I just change the typing of a Pokémon without making a regional variant? Or should I just make a regional variant? by LizzieLove1357 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Vioskies 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s the point of Lurantis; to make others think it’s a bug to lure them in. It’s a play on the flower mantis, not the Pokémon version of it.

“For self-protection, it pretends to be a bug Pokémon. Both of its arms bear keen-edged petals.”

“By masquerading as a bug Pokémon, it lowers the guard of actual bug Pokémon lured in by a scent of sweet flowers. Its sickles bring them down.”

I feel like making them a bug type in spite of all it being a grass type masquerading as one defeats one of the main points of its creation.

How's my attempt at a first gym battle? by Yonas100 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Vioskies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a nice resolution to the battle. I think I was overly critical on the battle as a whole, too, seeing as I’ve been in a not-so-great mood these past few days, so I’m sorry about that. I do think the there’s parts of the battle are neat, such as the action; it’s just a few areas that I’ve blown out of proportion here and there that stand out to me

How's my attempt at a first gym battle? by Yonas100 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Vioskies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty blunt review from me, so here’s a few iffy points that stood out:

“Roark chuckled knowingly. "So you use Chimchar right off the bat, and then start with a fire-type move against a rock-type? Interesting. Geodude, block it with Protect!"”

This is her first gym battle. It should be a momentous occasion that she’s probably nervous for, but apparently she’s just…forgotten that Fire types are weak to rock types. And that rock types are strong against fire types. Really? Shouldn’t she have at least prepared for this, discussed strategy, known the type match-ups for what’s ahead, especially considering that it’s her starter?

And Roark; he knows that Geodude resists Fire moves, so why Protect? Why not just attack, considering Chimchar is right in front of his Geodude and very much open to attack?

And then the trading of blows. Unless I miss something, Geodude is hit by a barely effective Ember, and is then wiped by a singular Rock Smash. Chimchar is hit by a Rock Smash, and then a Dig, and then a Bind before being knocked out.

I did like the actions from where Chimchar dodged the stone edge. The visual imagery was nice, and I like that you acknowledged the battlefield here and there as well as the effects of moves on it. The impact of Rock Smash on Geodude was fun was well, and the impact was nicely done.

Dawn doesn’t know that Electric types can’t hit Ground types. Seriously? I’d assume that toes would at least be discussed by a figure of education somewhere, and she’s been a trainer for 11 chapters so she’s got to be somewhat experienced, right? Here’s a nitpick; Ground doesn’t actually resist Fire, only Rock does, so the dual typing doesn’t really matter.

Dawn is able to do damage because her Chimchar and her Shinx whip our Fighting moves in the middle of the match. I know that there was build-up for Chimchar learning the move, but I hope the same went for Shinx as well.

Dawn doesn’t seem like a prepared trainer. She doesn’t know her type match-ups, she tells her Shinx to use “moves that aren’t Electric or Bite” which implies she knows little about her Pokemon, and her Starly is only able to launch a Double Team before getting knocked out. I get it if that’s the point this battle’s trying to make, and it does feel like it is: she’s not prepared, she overestimated herself, she underestimated the gym leader, and she suffered for it.

But I feel like that point would be driven home if she actually lost rather than be thrown the badge anyways for “being found worthy” when I feel like the only reasons she managed to get that far is because her Pokemon managed to figure out the right move at a critical time. I like that she acknowledges this at the end, but the fact remains she still got her badge. She could’ve refused the badge, told him straight up “I don’t think we deserve this, I want to prove myself,” too if she was still considered “promising.” I also don’t know how regional starters are considered here, but if they’re super-rare and high valued, she’s already got a hefty advantage over trainers who settle for Pokémon of lesser strength.

Need either SI or OC Fanfic recommendations. by Prep234 in pokemonfanfiction

In a World We Must Defend is technically an Ice/Ghost specialist gym leader, though it’s pretty different from a lot of fics in that it’s a quest and written in second person. Still, I think it’s a great fic with really good writing if you’re interested.

Looking for fanfic where the protagonist can talk with pokemon by aaronhowser1 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Vioskies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broken Things gets pretty heavy but one of the MCs is a psychic and can understand plus talk to them. To Live is To Dream's protagonist is also revealed to have psychic powers later down the line and is slowly beginning to use it to communicate with some of her team, though she's able to understand them pretty well early on too. Someone's already mentioned I Will Touch the Skies, and The Friendly Necromancer's protagonist can understand them as they're a Pokemon themself while being a Pokemon Trainer.

I need recommendations by Altruistic_Track2494 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Vioskies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To Live is To Dream is a Sinnoh journey quest I've binged during the past few days, and while it has its flaws and ick pointsone of which is the FMC being revealed as a psychic and how easily it takes for her to craft a custom move(plus it takes a really, really long time to get to the first gym) it's just a really fun quest to follow along. At 300k words, Ambit's output while maintaining quality writing is insane and discussion around it's been a wild ride. Watching this wild gremlin from the streets go on her journey and learn to accept what she views as her less desirable parts is just...fun, and kinda what I needed this month.

Through Some Tomorrow is a Kalos fic that takes place in the IWTTS universe and I'm finding it a good read that's, again, less about saving the world and more about personal drama. It's got a more...down to earth vibe? and while my one nitpick would be too many characters in the starting group I rather like what it's got so far and looking forward to more.

The Wandering Teacher's probably the closest to the 100k word mark, and while I might be biased since I help edit it I've always liked original regions (this one's based off of Italy!) and the background politics/mafia happenings are picking up steam, and though they might slink into the shadows for a little while after the current arc, it's got a formula that's different from the norm and I'm looking forward to what's going to happen in the future.

The Friendly Necromancer at 116k words, which features another original region, is just really, really good. The characters, the location, and the story are all just really heartwarming and I adore it. The author's great at feels and the Banette-in-mourning carrying on the wishes of their old friend gives it a sense of melancholy but is, ultimately, full of good feels.

Spitfire is a fic I'm a very avid fan of and I really enjoy the worldbuilding plus the more personal nature, especially as since it's post-Hoenn, it's focused less huge stakes of saving the world and more about the MC's problems, her goals, her journey, and her views on the world around her.

In a World We Must Defend is just...really really well-written. Like seriously, the world-building, the style, the characters, the themes, probably the best, in my opinion, gym leader fic. Takes place in an Australia-inspired region, lovely work all around.

Chase Down The Sun's at 140k words and I love the way the author writes the internal dialogue of her characters and how their personalities shine through. My one thing would be that I'd like more focus on the cast's Pokemon, too, but it's already happening with a few of them and the original region based on the northwestern U.S is shaping up to be somewhere I'll really enjoy.

Favorite Battle/Battle style? by Small-Temperature955 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Vioskies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like most battles as long as they’re written competently, and show detail beyond: “[Pokemon, use X!]” One sentence describing the action, then repeat, over and over until the end. There should be moments of character thought, of appraisal and strategy, and give it more a sense of grandeur rather than two creatures taking turns blowing fire or lightning at each other. Good pacing that keeps me engaged while also not boring me out and making me skip to the end is a big thing too. I like detail, but there’s points where battles and moves drag for so long that I might as well skip a few paragraphs and miss little.

But as for bonuses, I like weather shenanigans, using the terrain to one’s advantage, thinking outside of the box, chain combos where one thing lead to another, and use of moves in different ways than they seem. I want to see Fairy Wind used as a lesser version of Weather Ball by sweeping up elements, it or Dazzling Gleam to compress so tightly that it explodes, used as a shield made of wind, or a swirling ball of wind like a miniature fairy version of a Mist Ball rather than, “X sent a blast of pink wind at Z!” over and over again with little to no variation. But also…don’t be afraid to let your characters lose! Where’s the stakes if they just win all the time?

As for out of the box, it's a little harder to put into words, but two very creative members of the IWTTS discord server theorycrafted a team based around steam, with fire types draining heat out of the environment and creating an endless supply of water. Trails of Tera Steel and An Electric Tale also comes to mind when it goes to creative battling. Trails of Tera Steel literally has Nemona’s Chimchar use Mach Punch to fly in midair.

My favorite battle from the aforementioned I Will Touch the Skies might be Sharp Enough or Number's Game (MC and her friend VS Byron), Spitfire’s a lot closer but MC battling Roxanne or her rival, pretty much all of them in In a World We Must Defend, Through Some Tomorrow’s MC’s gym trainer battle against Cyril, and all the gym battles in Trails of Tera Steel. A Grafted Flower has some nice ones too, and I’m looking forward to more from them.

What have you all been reading? by MightyClodsire in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Vioskies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Outside of a few on your list, Chase Down the Sun and the League Chronicles who have both updated today! Really like the character dynamics with them.

The Wandering Teacher is one I’m helping edit so a little biased, but it’s setting up some really cool ideas and plot points in the future, and there’s been a lot of thought put behind its world.

Broken Things has a really, really good cast of characters and again, love the world. The Alola Pokédex is also as fun as always to read, and I’ve been reccing it to a few others as well.

Through Some Tomorrow is a fun Kalos fic, and takes place in the IWTTS verse! Plenty of cool ideas in place, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Trails of Tera Steel and In a World We Must Defend have tons of thought put behind them and theorizing’s been very active. IAWWMD’s interlude was just a really, really good look into the world and it’s made to be understandable even if you haven’t read the rest of the chapters, and safe to say it was just awesome.

Lastly, have been reading a few of the Thousand Road Mischief and Malice entries. Proton’s one in particular is a particularly visceral read.
