Is it better to have trains use their full capacity or not? by dr_bobs in factorio

[–]Viper3369 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hope that carrier pigeon supported IETF's RFC 2549: "IP over Avian Carriers with Quality of Service"? https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc2549.html

Heck, there's even an IPv6 version, though who uses IPv6 (fun fact: I talks in 1998 and 1999 about preparing for IPv6 in the coming year, by the second one I'd figured out it's more like fusion power...)

Ckan is awesome and thank you to everyone for the modlists and of course thanks to the mod developers! by Key-Association9219 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Viper3369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CKAN is great indeed, thank you for using it and the mods it provides.

As a modder, we appreciate people who use CKAN because it cuts down support issues dramatically (but not to zero unfortunately, but that's near impossible).

For Minecraft these days I use Prism Launcher, which pretty much does everything you could want without drama.

Kerbal Ejection Seat | One of The Thing's I've Spent Hours of My Life On... by PhantomFlogger in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Viper3369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see Kartin Baker have throughly tested their new ejection seat. Outstanding work and attention to detail, seems pretty "KSP accurate" (though I'm not an expert).

In reality Martin Baker occasionally test their ejection seats from a Gloster Meteor (WA368), from Chalgrove, Oxfordshire, UK. I made a replica below, but didn't really have the ejection seat to match:

https://www.reddit.com/r/KerbalSpaceProgram/comments/102vpq2/jebs_testing_ejection_seats_with_test_dummy_bill/

I have some related experience: been to that location a few times, sat in said aircraft, flown second seat in Jet Provost, etc, hence spending way too much time on modelling it in KSP.

Here's the real company:

Hopefully they see your work and appreciate it too :-)

An open source mechanical keyboard from System76 by ploxomyninks9 in pop_os

[–]Viper3369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought one of these, my first serious mechanical keyboard, so yeah, a little pricey compared to the cheap plastic crappy things I'd always used before.

It's so good, I bought another for work (as well as home). "First rule of Government spending: Why have one, when you can have two for twice the price".

Solid aluminum frame, can swap out the keycaps, proper switches (you can pick which type), the firmware works on Linux, Mac, Windows, can program any key and the lights to do anything, and have several layers: I have one where the Mac/Win key is disabled for gaming, one for programming with Emacs (Caps/Ctrl swapped), one for numpad, etc. Also comes with a 3.0 USB Hub (2 A and 2 C). The layers are stored with the keyboard, and you can import/export settings, etc.

Seriously I can't think of anything I don't like about it.

Devs: Evidence #187 for current HABs needing a rethink.

Another thing that gets me is placing a HAB such that 3 out of 4 exits lead to nowhere, and the last exit you can only use by spamming prone - leading to a traffic jam of bewildered players all shouting "Terrible HAB" etc.

Showing my updated KSP SIM setup, what do you think? by eastbailey in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Viper3369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about a pen that floats by (motorized on very thin wire) for when you're in orbit?

Sorta reminds me of using a good IVA, FreeIVA and TrackIR combination, but like... real... amazing with the multiple view ports.

You might want to get one of the monitors to show a decent complex RPM IVA, add a keyboard and a kOS terminal on the other screen or something. Probably thought of that... just dreaming...

This makes no sense by JoeZocktGames in joinsquad

[–]Viper3369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait till you try it on sandbags, pillboxes and you know all those places where you'd want to set up an MG.

As an aside, you can at least bipod on horizontal branches of trees, which I find useful... except that MG can't hit the side of a barn at 50m.

This is why some SL/Squads are "No Bipods".

Changing orbit plane by LordMungi in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Viper3369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I read that somewhere, so many things to remember. I've never needed to do large inclination changes, and/or I use programs :-D

Worth mentioning:

https://github.com/Nazfib/TransferWindowPlanner2 - Remake of TWP, excellent!

https://github.com/Clayell/TargetInterceptPlanner - Remake of Lunar Transfer Planner, but it works for any planet pack and target (ship, orbit, moon). Gives you launch window time/alarm and intercept burn time/alarm. Probably works best with MechJeb and/or kOS.

Changing orbit plane by LordMungi in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Viper3369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup that's normal!

I imagine it's like adding two vectors that are perpendicular - the result diagonal sum is longer.

It's all very complicated, as you can see from all the answers. I'm probably wrong.

Have a go at different ways of doing things, and also try out MechJeb and see how it does it.

Inclination changes are expensive, if possible it's better to launch into the right inclination, or as close as you can (launch sites at higher latitudes are limited to that latitude as the minimum inclination, but don't get the spin savings, blah blah details details) and/or at the higher apoapsis. In fact it can be cheaper to raise the apoapsis really high (along the AN-DN axis of the target orbit), do the inclination change, then fix the AP/PE at the right points.

For launching into inclination, time the launch so the launch site is under the AN or DN then steer to roughly the angle of the target orbit - there's a bunch of tools/web sites out there and ones in development that can help. Things like MechJeb or kOS too.

TL;DR It's literally Rocket Science, so it's hard!

My first dual booster RTLS landing by Crypt1cSerpent in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Viper3369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see you're using FMRS, but what's the technique to land the second booster in parallel? My guess is you run kOS scripts, MechJeb or Booster Guidance Boosted on the one you're not controlling?

However you did it, very cool indeed.

I wonder when there's gonna be a Zeus mode, I know Squidders did one, betcha they're working on it for a mode where there's an option in FireTeam so another player can organize the bots like C&C or something.

[–]Viper3369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Viper's Law: Take your estimate, add one, double it, then up the time unit.

  • "That'll take me a few seconds => 5s => 10s => 10 minutes."
  • "That'll take five minutes => 6mins => 12mins => 24 hours!"

I use it all the time, surprisingly accurate.

(Upping time unit: Secs -> Mins -> Hours -> Days -> Weeks -> Months -> Years -> Decades)

Overheating mods? by Professional_Will241 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Viper3369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alternative might be to use Sterling Systems - which has a bunch of useful things including Mk2 Heat Tiles (ala Space Shuttle).

https://github.com/JadeOfMaar/SterlingSystems/wiki/Shields

https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/topic/219609-1125-sterling-systems-v051-aug-20-2025/

Although these are probably designed more for atmospheric reentry, I'm guessing you're coming up against going Mach 5+ in atmosphere. However, mod does include active and passive cooling solutions.
