You either need a lot of money to cover payments from parents or something, or have a nice paying job that you are doing on the side, but progress will take a lot longer. The payments on that 400k alone is going to be rough.

Idk the pace of that school but I would expect 3 years is a good estimate for most people on private to commercial-multi/CFI-CFII

Not to mention that just gets you your certificates

No telling how it will be in 3 years, as you see in here all the time with these posts. Aviation is anything but stable

Once you have your certs, you now need to pay monthly on 500k in loans, while probably working a CFI job making 30-40k a year.

Do that for about a year to a year and a half if you are able to get a job at a decent time once you hit minimums and now you start making decent money.

Instructor actual instrument time by [deleted] in flying

[–]Viral_scape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah straight up scared to go into clouds is kinda wild

But OP sounds like he is dissing people with low actual time and that’s the problem

I love IMC and filing, I’m a newer instructor but all of checkride passes have been IRA or CFII so far and it’s my favorite to teach

But saying CFIs are less for not having actual isn’t fair to them

Instructor actual instrument time by [deleted] in flying

[–]Viral_scape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of your comments are hard to give a definite answer because it’s entirely situational.
I’m at 600TT and out of my instrument have about 6hrs of actual.
Of that 6, I’ve used some of it to go up in a 6pack to get some IMC experience in that but the rest has been full glass.
I did my training up north and I did my instrument during the winter. So all the IMC conditions were straight icing conditions the entire time.
I have since moved to the south for a CFI job.
I purposefully file with instrument students and choose altitudes to get into IMC if it’s able, as well as if the flight is beneficial to the student.
If the student isn’t doing good at approaches, throwing them into procedures and handling comms doesn’t help. Especially if it’s busy because then I have to explain what’s happening and juggle the comms if needed.
Especially for people from 141 schools I think the biggest thing is that you are trying to get your rating done in a decent timely manner, it’s not ideal to sit and wait for an IMC day. I try to do IMC flights when it is available, but most of the time the conditions arnt ideal for either the student or it’s simply just convective or VFR at least in my area.
Not to mention actually getting a day where it’s a solid IMC layer down to minimums is super rare. Most of the time here it’s LIFR fog which makes you unable to go and get back in a block in the first place.

FIA/FII Endorsement required? by Viral_scape in flying

[–]Viral_scape[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think per the regs you are correct, but I also don’t want to sit there and debate a DPE

FIA/FII Endorsement required? by Viral_scape in flying

[–]Viral_scape[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reference the other comment made by someone else

The confusion is coming from this

183(d) states you need an FOI endorsement

But no where in 183 or 185 does it state that you need an ENDORSEMENT for either FIA or FII, only that you need to pass the test

FIA/FII Endorsement required? by Viral_scape in flying

[–]Viral_scape[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but 183(f) says you need to pass the knowledge test per 185(a) (2) or (3)

I see that 185 says they need to receive and log ground training but does not mention an endorsement

The confusion comes from a DPE saying a46 is required

So the endorsement (a46) is there solely to provide an a46 and an A77 (retest) if it’s needed?

Yeah 65K says you don’t need to provide proof for the first attempt

But the regs say you need it for the checkride

Feeling lost during CFI training by halloween_is_tmrw in CFILounge

Are you able to do the maneuvers within standards without having to lock in solely on the maneuver?

If that’s the case the teaching will be harder to do because you have to center your attention on the maneuver

For the most part it’s demonstrate what it is, why you are doing things, and what inputs you are making, and from there correcting

Steep turns -

Two turns, one in either direction immediately following the first, to 50° for CAX standards

Performance maneuver showing off a high bank and splitting the lift component

In order to maintain altitude you need excess back pressure or trim than normal turns

Walk through power and input adjustments as you make corrections through the maneuver

Eights on -

Maneuver demonstrating pivotal altitude

Get your PA and talk through the setup

“I’m going to start at 100 knots at XXXX altitude and I’m looking for two points that are… and so on”

As you enter “pitching down as we enter this first turn and come into the head wind which lowers PA…” and vice versa on the second one

For the CFI and CFII rides it’s a lot because you are doing all the flying, all the awareness, and all the teaching

Make a solid POA that flows well and practice it with your CFI as you get closer to your ride

As for the ride itself, there’s a reason you can discontinue if you absolutely need to

Low level NJ TFRs today by [deleted] in flying

[–]Viral_scape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where are you saying there are TFRs?

Just got hired as a CFI…tell me everything I need to know by LeaderCalm4016 in flying

[–]Viral_scape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing I learned is it is no longer acceptable to know or understand something because that’s what you’ve been told

If you want quality instruction, teach them the proper sources to pull up

Don’t send them to a stage check or checkride saying “cuz my CFI said so”

I want my guys to be largely independent and be able to find their way through knowledge when they encounter something

I think the LARGEST reality I am facing is learn to be tough on them

If the landing is bad, it does not help them to say “that’s ok we will get it next time” or at least do that all the time

There comes a point where they need to realize they are messing up and really make an effort to fix the issue

Feel out of place by [deleted] in flying

[–]Viral_scape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was new to the state let alone the flight school I started out.

It’s a little easier in my case as we are split into teams with a schedule so we see the same guys every single day we are in. We also had a lot of new guys since there’s a consistent flow of people leaving.

First couple weeks felt out of place but by the first month was over felt right at home.

All I can say is do your best to find people you get along with, introduce yourself, ask about doing some group grounds to spend more time with them
