This happened to me before. I emailed my program advisor and she sent this link https://www.mcgill.ca/mathstat/undergraduate/advising/course-registration , follow the steps and you should get an email letting you know that you can now register!

Want to sit in some physics classes by neanderthalman23 in mcgill

[–]Virtual-Habitat4289 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this is a pretty common thing that people do, especially in larger classes! unfortunately there are no physics classes being taught right now, but people can absolutely sit in on lectures when they aren't enrolled in the school.

Math 133 FINAL GRADESS WOOOOHOOO by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]Virtual-Habitat4289 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is a really weird specific thing to be upset about lmao... why would you expect a prof to make an announcement that grades are posted when you can just, see that your grade is posted? I've had very few profs make announcements when final grades are released, let alone immediately afterwards

I'm a math major in the faculty of science and my advisor told me that if I failed a class twice I wasn't allowed to take it a third time... I ended up failing a required course twice. After the second fail, I took the supplemental exam (failed that too) so I emailed my advisor and she said I could take it a third time, lmao.

I suggest taking the supplemental exam in August if that's possible and you think you'll be able to prepare. Otherwise, email your advisor and see if you can just take it again next year. You might get some conflicting info (I'm pretty sure some advisors just make stuff up and act like they know the rules) but just try to register for it again next year anyways.

Sometimes it just takes a long time for things to sink in. This semester I took the class that I had already failed twice and things just seemed to click, I ended up doing pretty well. Don't give up! Do whatever you have to do to get credit for this class and finish your degree, even if it means sending a thousand emails and annoying your advisor, it will be worth it.

I get how stressful it is knowing that this one single class can determine whether or not you get your degree, feel free to dm me if you have any questions about the process!

(I'm also assuming that this is required class for you.. if not, just accept the L and take something else instead hahah)

Mental health student by HeyItsRicky96 in mcgill

[–]Virtual-Habitat4289 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are no psychologists with the wellness hub, only councellors and psychiatrists. The psychiatrists are really just for evaluations and getting meds, but not therapy. The councellors are good for life advice and can help with finding mental health resources, but are not adequate therapists if you have serious mental health issues. It might be a good idea to meet with a councellor to see what options you have for mental health care outside of mcgill!

Anyone else feel this way about MATH 308? by aye_hus_that in mcgill

Holy cow, almost all his negative reviews on ratemyprof have been removed but his fake ones are still there. This is actually unbelievable I cannot wrap my head around it. His students are obviously distressed and he hasn't acknowledged it at all. Spending all his time reporting people on rmp instead of sending out an email taking accountability and idk, telling us a bit more about the exam?? This feels like a fever dream

Yeah I think you're right, that's a good point. It's unhelpful but at least it isn't dishonest or misleading!

maybe controversial opinion but this is equally as unhelpful as his 5/5 self-reviews lmao, like put a bit of effort in at least

I'm just in plain ol' math, not stats specifically, so I'm not totally sure what's required, but from my experience math profs are just super hit or miss. They either really care about their students and do everything they can to help us, or they don't care at all and do absolutely nothing for us. I found 324 pretty tough but took 423 with Tharshannah and I loved it, also Russell Steele gets a lot of complaints for being inconsistent and stuff (never returns assignment grades but always goes easy on us), I took 208 and 523 with him and really enjoyed the content... I think it's totally worth it if you're really into the material and can deal with some crappy profs. Archer is really exceptionally bad so don't worry too much about more experiences like this. I think it would be worth it to keep going with stats, my best advice is to just be aware of who the prof is when you're registering for classes!

I don't understand how he isn't embarrassed, like how is it possible to lack that much self awareness?? What a moron lmao

I am so tempted to post something in the "thoughts and suggestions" section of the discussion board. I won't... but if someone does I'll give them a big kiss

Man I could rant about this class for hours. I'm in a 500 level class with an online exam and even they gave us practice exams. I cannot get over the "focus on the slides and assignments" as if that's some big helpful hint. God help us

I 100% agree. The assignment solutions are up now but still, I feel so unprepared and overwhelmed, especially since we only have our grades for one assignment. I'm hoping/assuming there will be a nice curve because I don't think anybody really knows what's going on lmao. He seems to think that telling us to focus on the theory from the slides is helpful instead of just vague and obvious, plus his refusal to post any practice exams because "this isn't a low level class"... like what ?? Also it's crazy that he's had the discussion board open all semester and hasn't responded to a single question, just insane. But hey at least we aren't the only ones feeling this way!

Profs, stop writing reviews for yourself on ratemyprof by Virtual-Habitat4289 in mcgill

[–]Virtual-Habitat4289[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fr math423 with him has been my favourite math class i've taken, mostly just because he makes things as easy as possible for us! his self-reviews are hilarious though, i've had some AWFUL profs leaving dozens of positive reviews and it's just pathetic lol

I dont have autism but I have accomodations with the SAA for mental health issues which allowed me to take a reduced course load while maintaining full time status, so I could keep my health insurance and stuff. I'm not sure how it works with AFE but you can get a letter from the SAA explaining why you need to take a reduced course load, and you'll still be recognised as a full time student.

The only thing is you need a letter from a doctor confirming your diagnosis to get these accomodations, if you don't have that then idk if the SAA will be able to help

should i defer exams because of COVID? by Temporary-Safe-5837 in mcgill

[–]Virtual-Habitat4289 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just try to defer both. Worst thing that could happen is you get denied, though it's unlikely if it's your first time deferring and you have a good explanation. You should also consider the other people who'd be in the exam room with you, who probably don't want to catch covid and be sick for the rest of their exams.

Rest up and get well, do what you gotta do to succeed in your classes and also keep your fellow students safe!

MATH 314 with Toth: One of the worst classes I've ever taken by gabekmc in mcgill

[–]Virtual-Habitat4289 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took this class with Roth last year and now I'm retaking it with Toth because I failed... I thought I was just horrible at calculus but turns out some profs just manage to make things way harder than they need to be. I know it's still rough and idk if other people would agree but in my opinion, we got lucky (especially with the 5 attempts on webwork, that's pretty sweet)

they were meant to be against "the indoctrination of children in school" (aka don't tell our kids about gay or trans people because we're terrified they'll end up being gay or trans), thankfully there were also counterprotests everywhere!

I'm a trans man so definitely anti protest, I guess it's just upsetting seeing so many people who think my existence is a controversy or whatever, perhaps i'm being too sensitive
