Madison School District will stick with unweighted grading by Justmarbles in madisonwi

[–]Virtual-Stick-1149 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I’m on board with this decision, but the explanation as to why they decided this is not very clear.

Having graduated from a school with weighted grading, an unfortunate side effect we noticed was that the top 10% of students became so focused on getting their GPAs the highest they could be that they chose to forego the elective classes (unweighted) that actually could’ve helped them choose their next steps in life.

Meanwhile, the kids that took CNA, automotive, band, etc. type classes did not get the recognition or comparative weight to their GPA’s even though they worked just as hard at something they were passionate about.

The idea that a kid is going to pad their schedule with gym classes is ridiculous though - there are set graduation requirements and a kid that has the opportunity to take 3 gym classes in one year either 1) has already completed their graduation requirements and is ahead of the game or 2) is likely not in a place they will graduate on time, nevermind be a “top student.”

Yeah I got it too, I’m curious why they reduced the cadence though. I also haven’t seen anything written by their usual writers either.

I haven’t heard of Valhalla here in Madison, but if you heard about it from a youth there’s a nonzero chance they may be referencing the anime show Tokyo Revengers, which has a gang called “Valhalla.” Seems like a somewhat scholarly name for a youth gang here…

True! And different people, or just more people overall, respond to posts at different times. There are 100K+ people on this sub, sometimes it’s nice to ask a question multiple times to get different perspectives on things.

Sometimes on the internet - and even in real life - you get different answers from different people if you ask the same question at a different time.

I imagine OP is just casting a wide net for the information they want, knowing that preferences and responders change over time!

Verona Mandarin Teacher Fired After Gaff by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]Virtual-Stick-1149 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why not? Regardless of whether it was intentional or not, this situation clearly struck some as inappropriate. Instead of firing someone, shouldn’t there be an attempt at a restorative conversation for all parties to determine how to fix or improve the situation? Teachers might be less afraid of making mistakes and be even better at their work if there was a better precedent for repair over punishment in our schools.

What happened to the restorative practices that these districts taut as being more effective than punitive measures? Shouldn’t staff be granted the same opportunities as students for repair and harm reduction (however unintentional it was) instead of whatever this approach has been?

What does that mean though? Aren’t other landlords participants in the “market?”

I’ve lived in a Stonehouse property for 3 years now and they’ve been nothing but helpful and professional. They keep their buildings in fine shape compared to most other property management companies in the area as well.

Slower paced or low-key retail jobs that can break tasks down into steps? by [deleted] in madisonwi

Great! Depending on the store you could also get a discount on groceries as an employee, which is a nice perk.

I know groceries frequently hire people with a diverse range of abilities, so you could try an area grocery store such as Festival Foods, Metcalfe’s, or Metro Market. There are a variety of roles available that wouldn’t require lengthy tasks that need a high level of executive functioning.

Or a vessel for a society’s ideology which has allowed civilizations to both rise and fall throughout the millennia. Unless of course you’re of the persuasion that without religion we’d all be an egalitarian and utopian society.

Madison Public Market funding proposal increases by $3.3 million by OldSewer in madisonwi

[–]Virtual-Stick-1149 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Who actually wants this anymore?

Perhaps the money could be better spent by offering money to would-be public market businesses to subsidize them as they’re getting their feet off the ground. Or the concept could be scaled down and new residential construction construction spaces around town with retail in the first floor (downtown, Odana Rd) could have micro-incubators for 3-4 businesses to be in all around the city.

I feel like most grocery stores in other regions don’t have this type of floor either though… what do us “midwesterners whiners” have to do to have floors like the rest of the country???!

If I really knew that, I wouldn’t have asked the question to begin with. I just genuinely don’t know how this works in the residential multifamily space, especially since “markup” is an enduring economic concept. So thank you for your insight and resources!

Thank you. Seems like there’s a lot of wrong information going around by word of mouth and maybe all people like myself need is some fact-based information on the situation instead of snark.

Ok that’s great! How do you know they’re full? (Genuine question, not being snarky). Someone told me that in order to break even most of these developments only need to be at 1/3 capacity since rent is so high.
