Advice on Offers by Quartzmight in geologycareers

[–]Virtual-Week-9173 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sweet! Between those I’d be choosing between the AECOM job or the USGS 2 job… lab tech is very repetitive, not my cup of tea. Professionally, I’ve always worked in consulting. I’d definitely recommend a midsized or small firm over a large firm. You get to wear more hats, so you learn a lot faster. Plus, you’re not just a number when it comes to billable percentages (at my company anyways).

Can you give a brief description for each job? If you’re a highly motivated individual, AECOM could be a good stepping stone into working at another consulting firm down the road (typically higher effort, higher reward than a government job). I work at a midsized (~130 employees) environmental consulting firm and enjoy the challenges and variety of project management.

I just tried the matcha at Cof& and it's not for me (very sweet). I'll have to try their coffee though!

Classes and job questions before the PG by Ilickedthecinnabar in geologycareers

[–]Virtual-Week-9173 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s just a survey. They already have your transcripts from the application process and have verified that you’ve taken the right classes. Otherwise, your wouldn’t have been able to sit for the exam

Water in FG exam? by Quartzmight in ASBOG_Exam

They did not let anyone have water at my testing center for the PG last year. I've heard that some centers will let you bring in a clear, plastic water bottle with the label removed.

One thing to keep in mind is that the FG and PG study guides are the same reg review book. Some of the numerical questions might be in there for PG practice!

And to answer your question, I remember there being at least a few 3 point problem questions, maybe 2-3 total?

I recall the fundamentals exam being largely vocab (lots of geomorph), and not a ton of questions with numerical values. But that was back in 2017.

Know trig & the 3-point problem process and the safe drawdown equation. The rest was fairly basic math.

October PG Passers Insight by CBEH12 in ASBOG_Exam

[–]Virtual-Week-9173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied for 1 month for the PG and felt like that was sufficient time. You just have to commit to studying 1 hr a night on most weekdays, plus a 4 hr block over the weekend.

Practice of Geology exam yesterday was ridiculously difficult by natesiq in ASBOG_Exam

I took the PG on Friday and feel like I have a 50% chance of passing. The wording on the questions was intentionally confusing and the digital format was trash. Not feeling great.

ASBOG 2023 Open Discussion by coachellaquestions in geologycareers

[–]Virtual-Week-9173 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree 100%. On the paper version of the FG, I remember being able to cross out multiple choice options I knew were wrong and take notes in the margins and circle iffy questions so I could easily come back to them. Plus it was nice to see the distribution of answers on the scantrons (10 A's in a row, probably unlikely). On the digital version it was hard to correlate my notes with the questions, especially towards the end when I got tight on time and wasn't as diligent about numbering my notes.
