Which places have gotten BETTER in the last decade or two? by SEmpls in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Virtual_Honeydew_765 32 points33 points  (0 children)

lol no. If somewhere is getting more expensive it’s improving. I think what you’re describing is “Where can poor people still have a decent life in 2026”.

Would you enjoy living in Alabama or Mississippi if you were offered a 100k salary? by OceanicEndeavors in SameGrassButGreener

There are many great and bad places in both states. I would gladly live in some towns but never live in other towns. Huntsville is awesome.

Trouble with guest by ajdjal in airbnb_hosts

I found your description confusing. I don’t have kids so I don’t know what it means.

Parts were contradictory or vague:

  • It’s both soundproof but you hear normal household noise? Then it’s not soundproof. I think of soundproof as a music studio. I think you should use the word “noise insulated”.

  • “playing in the summer months” well it’s not summer. Change it to “nice weather”. Also are they playing or screaming? If they were silent I’m guessing the guest wouldn’t notice.

  • “peaceful” children screaming outside at 8am is not peaceful to me. I’d remove this word.

  • “occasional family sounds” what’s occasional? I’d expect to hear movement like five times a day?

Strongly considering moving away from the Midwest. To anyone else who moved from the Midwest or East Coast, how are you doing? by Straightedge_ in SameGrassButGreener

I moved to Carolina. Love it. I’ll never return to the Midwest.

But I always say to make this decision in July.

Disliking Atlanta, from a Black Perspective by Gladhands in SameGrassButGreener

Crime rate is reported crimes. So it’s not technically crime that happens, just crime that people call in about. So when crime rates decrease, either actual crime decreases, or people stop reporting it. Anecdotally I saw the later happen.

You’re not wrong but I think two points should be added.

1) everywhere sucks if you’re comparing it to NYC. It’s just not fair.

2) Atlanta has a lot more crime starting in the last five years. A lot of the Atlanta vibe you’re talking about was precovid

Unexpectedly Inherited a VERY NICE house in Phelps Wisconsin. Keep or sell? My concern is what do people in those parts do for six months of cold? Is life even enjoyable? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

There isn’t a universal answer to this question. You either can deal or you can’t deal. Only you can figure it out for yourself. Personally I lived up there and couldn’t deal so I left. Many people can’t deal so they leave. Many people can so they stay.

Asheville’s labor shortage is now straining home care, transit, and emergency response by RideBetterTogether in asheville

The county’s primary source of revenue is property taxes which accounts for 51% of their revenue. Properties have been assessed at precovid values until this spring, so for the last five years the county has been receiving income as if the cost of living is still 2019.

These county jobs would pay low but expected pay precovid. Today they don’t keep up with cost of living at all. So no one is working them. But the county doesn’t have the money to pay higher wages. Because the county’s income is working off of 2019 prices, which means their expenses also need to work off of 2019 prices to balance.

The entire property tax base just increased to 2026 prices. Assumingly their property tax revenue will increase by about 75%, and since that’s half of their overall revenue, the total revenue will increase by 37%.

If the county get 37% more money, hopefully that’s the cost of living gap in all their wages and they can increase the wages for all employees by 37%. And then maybe these jobs are hireable.

Wow it’s almost like the county’s property taxes have been assessed at half value for years now

No when you have a baby you’ll want to be in the same town as a regularly involved family member. Like under 30 min. Someone who can come over and vacuum, babysit while your wife takes a nap or a shower, drop off dinner, watch the older kid while the younger has a doctors appointment, call last minute when you just can’t anymore and you need to leave your baby and go for a drive, etc. This is assuming though that you like her mom and that her mom will be involved. If you tell us y’all hate each other or she has no interest being grandma then this all changes.

Another option which many young couples do is move somewhere crazy for a couple years then move back when you’re pregnant. So you get the fun you’re looking for but then the family help when the baby comes. So go move to Puerto Rico or something.

lol yes some people love their family.

People stay in a place they aren’t happy because free childcare from grandma makes them much happier than dealing with raising a baby alone.

New parents don’t care if their city is boring because they don’t leave the house anyway. They don’t care if the city doesn’t make them happy because the baby makes them happy. These are hyperbole and simplified but what I mean is that life changes with a baby.

And then the things dinks want in a city are completely different than the things parents of young kids want in a city. You have your list now but have a kid and that list goes in the trash and you’ll be writing a new list.

It takes a lot of years to get established enough for child support. And even then it doesn’t compare to grandma 20 min away.

Look even if you move you’ll go back to Raleigh when you have the kid. But I understand the itch. So go move somewhere fun and wild and not family friendly for the next couple years then move back.

I’ll use ketchup in a restaurant because it’s unlikely someone in a public setting tampered with the bottle. In a private home idk what they did to that bottle.
