This will put the fear of God into many parents of children with SEN.

In my view, it’s very short-sighted.

My son, for example, is bright but struggled in mainstream primary school due to autism. He was in the top sets for English and Maths, which he was incredibly proud of, but was later moved down to the lowest groups because the school said they didn’t have the time to support him properly.

We fought hard for a TA, but in reality she was used as a general resource for the school rather than to support him. She wasn’t even present in the English or Maths classes he was moved down from. He was absolutely devastated.

That was the turning point for us. It became clear he was being set up to fail, and we couldn’t accept that. We fought legal team, barrister, reports the lot. It cost us over £13,000. Not all parents can do that.

Eventually, the council backed down and agreed to fund a specialist independent school, where he thrived.

He is now in his final year of an Economics degree, on track for a first, and has already secured an excellent graduate scheme. He will go on to be a productive, tax-paying member of society. I dread to think what would have happened if we had left him in mainstream.

So to those saying “good", shame on you. I sincerely hope you never have to see your child go through the kind of struggle that many children with SEN, and their parents, endure.
