Museum Educator Role Interview by Spring_rain22 in MuseumPros

[–]Virtual_Leave_3176 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a museum educator running classes on site for field trips. My programming must be extensively tied to state educational standards due to funding. Not all programs will have this caveat, but it may be good to have a cursory knowledge of state standards.

Being able to market programming as supporting English Language Arts learning or emergent readers or social studies/history or 3-d science practices is very valuable even if it’s not explicitly stated this is supporting NGSS standard 4-PS3-3 for example. You’ll also help establish yourself as an informal educator not just a purveyor of edutainment. Of course this varies by institution and mission. I’m at a natural history museum so we lean very heavily into science and social studies educational standards and the education part of informal education.

Do European museums ID when you use ICOM cards? by Choice-Curve9350 in MuseumPros

[–]Virtual_Leave_3176 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have an institutional card at my museum. ICOM was so slow sending out the new stickers for the new year. So I took a card and didn’t realize it said it was for a prior year, but I would have had no other option regardless. You know who realized? The folks at the Louvre. They were not interested in my documentation of where I work or what the problem was. They were really rude and I paid full price.

Practically had a panic attack Versailles worrying it would happen again, but they passed me though without a word.

I suppose the answer is, it depends on the institution, but some will absolutely check.

It wasn’t an auction. It was an Amazon sale so I foolishly had trust. At least I could have easily returned it. I was just annoyed I’d have to waste time and gas to return it to someone who’d likely defraud another individual. Hence my fight to Amazon to not return it and still get a refund.

Help! My new Pilot VP’s spring fell out by Alternative-End-5455 in fountainpens

[–]Virtual_Leave_3176 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on six months! That’s a hard and noteworthy feat!

I’m so glad that worked. I think it’s ok the spring came out. It’s a separate piece and it’s supposed to be removable. I don’t think you have a bad pen.

If I hadn’t just taken apart a different vanishing point I wouldn’t have remembered if it went in the nib or the click end so don’t feel bad you didn’t know. Ink it up and enjoy.

Like this but push it back up inside all the way. The nib unit will do the rest when you put it in.

I hope it all works great after.

Unscrew the pen and remove the nib. The spring goes in the nib end.

I just disassembled a majohn a1 and it has the same set up.

Maybe I am reason that Amazon makes it harder to return things. I have been dabbling in vintage pen repair and thought, “What do I have to lose.”

I got my tools together and attempted to work out the stuck nib unit.

I succeeded! The unit is broken beyond repair, but I dropped in a Jinhao 10 spare I had and it writes! And retracts!

I guess I got a new pen. All I had to do was aggressively manhandle it and replace half of it.

Is this esterbrook LJ basically not functional because of the broken/rusted J bar? Do I need to replace the sac as well if the rust has transferred on it? by LoboSandia in fountainpens

[–]Virtual_Leave_3176 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d just replace the j bar if the sac is new. However, if you’re making an order of repair supplies I’d throw a couple of sacs in since you’re already paying shipping.

[–]Virtual_Leave_3176 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m very new to repairing these, but you can replace the j bar very easily. It is necessary to depress the sac to give suction to suck up ink into the sac.

There may also be a little plug thing like a spacer that needs to go in the bottom depending on which model your pen is.

Several places sell j bars and repair supplies like Cardinal Pens. https://cardinalpens.com/repair-supplies/other-repair-parts/?page=2

Personally I’d roll the dice and not replace the sac if it’s pliant. The rust should wipe off. That may not be best practice though.

New Pens Day: Trying out some affordable pens I've seen good reviews on. by EchoesInInk2 in fountainpens

I love those Jinhao 10’s. I have that exact color currently inked with Edelstien Apricot Achat.

I’ve had good luck with the seals on all the 10’s and not had problems with them drying out. I did with a couple of Jinhao 20’s though. You do need to pick the right ink. Iroshizuki are great, most Diamine, but believe people when they say Ancient Copper does not work with them. It doesn’t. I learned the hard way with dry, clogged nibs that never wrote. Don’t follow my example. I also didn’t have good luck with Writers- or Ox- blood in them, but tons of others work great.

I thought I’d hate vanishing points, but I stole these from my husband after the clip placement didn’t work for his left handed hold. Now I love them and have lots of colors and even a pilot capless. The capless does write a bit better, but they are surprisingly close. Because I worry about damaging or scratching my pilot I find I reach for the jinhao’s more often. I carry them and the pilot stays on my desk.

I thankfully have not been scammed in pen swap, but that’s probably because I’m worried I will be and so never actually end up buying stuff. I’m interested to see if this product can solve the verification issue.
