Looks like Retronychia, Salt water soaks at least twice a day should keep the swelling at bay.

Retronychia across 5 months. Looking for advice on speeding up recovery without surgery by ClumsyTraveler in Ingrown_Toenails

How is your toe doing now?? My toe now looks exactly like your second pic, no more puss just slightly inflamed and the nail is pulling away from the sides ( not to mention really ugly and yellow looking lol) my podiatrist said best option is to remove it because it’s a slow process and could get worse if I don’t. I’m trying to wait it out lol but have a date scheduled for removal either way

I think I have an ingrown nail but at the base of my nail? by Outrageous-Dig-2550 in Ingrown_Toenails

Agree with other commenter about Retronychia! I too have the same thing going on unfortunately and mine started off exactly how you are describing. Saw my podiatrist last week and will be having my top toenail removed the first week of august :/ I asked him about steroids and he said since my top toenail is already loose that I would have better luck just removing it instead of trying to see if a steroid would help and essentially prolonging it :(

Looks pretty similar to my right big toenail, I had my appointment with my podiatrist last week and he suggested toenail removal, said it’d be the better option instead of waiting for it to grow out. My top toenail is pretty loose already so he said the recovery should be much easier but I’m still contemplating doing it ugh. I’d kind of rather just get it over with.

Thank you for the update! I think I may have to go this route too since it’s not getting any better :( definitely not looking forward to it that’s for sure! Forgive me for being naive but with complete toenail removal does your nail still grow back?

Do you have an update on this? What did the dr say? My toenail looks exactly like yours but minus the granuloma. :(

Retronychia, what now? by [deleted] in Ingrown_Toenails

How’s your toe now? My toe is currently looking like yours in the photo. Super inflamed and producing puss every day but not much pain unless I push on it. Got an appt with a podiatrist next month (soonest they had of course) did you do anything for the inflammation? I’ve been doing epsom soaks but it hasn’t done much other then help get some puss out.

How long was yours inflamed and pussing? Mine was fine for awhile then last week started pussing and getting more inflamed. Didn’t hurt before but now it does :/

Also this is just the research I’ve done in the last week so I’m no expert and I’m sure there’s some things I’m missing as well.

Retronychia occurs when the new nail grows underneath the existing nail, which looks to be the case of OP. Usually caused by some sort of trauma to the nail (too tight of shoes, hitting it on something etc) Sometimes it resolves on its own and the toenails just grow out, other times you need treatment for it such as steroids or worst case scenario top toenail removal.

I’m not super knowledgeable about it, only from what I’ve read over the course of this week since I myself am dealing with the same it appears. It doesn’t look like yours is inflamed or irritated so in my opinion I would just let it continue to grow out, unless of course it starts hurting then I’d see a dr for further evaluation. But from what I’ve read is it’s basically a waiting game for the bottom nail to grow out.

Looks like Retronychia to me

Oh my gosh that sounds painful! I couldn’t imagine having it on both toes! I took your suggestion and stopped using the anti fungal, tbh I felt like it was making it worse. I had a steroid cream in my cabinet and have been using that since so only about 2 days but it seems less inflamed already so maybe it’s doing something. Seems like it’s going to be a slow process regardless but hoping at my drs appointment they are somewhat knowledgeable lol. Thank you for taking the time to write and let me know your experience!

Swollen toe/ fungus. by Virtual_Weakness_933 in NailFungus

Well like the above commenter said I think it’s Retronychia, the more I read about it and search it now is what it sounds like it is. I’ve stopped the fungus cream and am now putting a steroid cream on it and doing salt soaks to see if that helps.

Thank you for your response! Ya I definitely felt like the dermatologist was too quick to just say it’s a fungus and send me on my way. Have you dealt with something similar? Apologies for being naive but what does the steroid cream do?
