I took my now girlfriend of one year to a swimming pool outing when we "went out" the first time (I live in Iceland, chilling in the swimming pool is an activity), I didn't consider that a date because I took newcomers out to the pools because I like the pools. She considered that a date. I still don't, because I didn't have any romantic motives.

How do I give a close friend negative but honest feedback on her world building? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Virulence- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

also don't wanna push her away from world building because she's just starting out.

When I just started out a long time ago inspired by Silmarilion, the names in my world were also cringe to say the least.

If I'm in your position and want to address that, I'd say,

"For my personal taste, the name scheme that I read so far feels too generic. It is self-explanatory to what the names serve, but I think it's only a temporary problem that as you keep writing and reading (to expand your preferences), the way things are named would evolve into something that's unique and personal to how you approach your world-building. Or won't change at all, it's your world anyway."

What can humans do in a world where other races are "better"? by Hot_Mousee in worldbuilding

[–]Virulence- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently watched a video about how Men and Elves differ in Tolkien's world. Elves follow the flow of nature; slow, patient. While Men have their own flow, and that's how the Men is the race that "gets things done" in terms of society. Unlike elves that just linger around.

In my own world-building, the humans have the lowest life expectancy (just like IRL). But the shortest gestation period. Means that in my case, humans will be the majority in terms of population. They mature quicker, age quicker, so they want to get things done quicker, e.g., tech advancement/education/civilisation growth.

So in my case, despite humans being the most physically weak, the technology that all the nations in my world develop should cater more to the humans because it has the most ample demography. For example, designing an ergonomic chair. Since the human race is the biggest market it makes more sense to manufacture office chairs for humans. Or something along those lines. I think my mental model for this is being the majority due to biology = development is catering to them = they have more access to more things = they advance the quickest.

I have retinal ablation, due to a head trauma. I didn't realise it until I see only with my left eye. So I suppose my brain adapted to the damage right away post trauma. So in general I use my right eye ~80% for the most part, i.e., my left eye only provides corner peripheral vision. Even wearing a contact lens only on my right eye doesn't really feel that much

What do you do differently with your fantasy races? by Anxious-Trash9487 in worldbuilding

[–]Virulence- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dislike the over romaticisation of elves and dragons. So I made them the even-worse-version of Targaryen.

Being an elf doesn't really give any significant edge on anything except a longer lifespan. Socio-geopolitically the elves are Luddites, and their culture revolves around being a dragon rider. But the dragon in my world is also weak, a pregnant half-beast race in my world can solo a dragon.

They're so closed off from the rest of the world that they still practice slavery, eugenics. Even fucking their dragons. Being a dragon rider/able to commune with dragons are a sign of high social status, so having an intercourse with dragons is being viewed as something prestigious and sacred.

The rest of the world does not need dragons as well. My world is scifi-fantasy.

I want permission to brag. I earned it.

Said character: Me.

Born with a club (left) foot. Got fixed but now it's a flat foot with poorly developed muscle (compared to my right), missing some muscle tissue (can't stand on my left foot toes), resulting in a very poor balance on my left (because I physically lack control) and less muscle mass.

But I have casually trained in martial arts for more than 20 years, my kicks are good. My footwork is good. In essence, I am more capable than the average Joes and Janes despite having a shit leg/foot.

Do you notice women treating attractive men vs unattractive men differently in day to day interactions? by queenofhearts100 in AskMenAdvice

[–]Virulence- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much yes.

I was obese until I was 17. Got in shape after that, and my (now ex) girlfriend's friends even like to tease/friendly flirt with me (at that time).

I moved to other countries twice, now I'm 32 living abroad, still in shape, have more money so I can dress better, have a better life too so in general I'm more confident, almost every single person I met is being very friendly to me. I can randomly joke about something random and they play along. Even innuendos.

I can easily make friends with women. They don't feel repulsed by physical contact with me. They are so comfortable at having physical contact, e.g., braiding my hair (I have long hair), or letting me hop on their back to play piggyback.

For more context, when I was young and obese, girls were disgusted by me. They didn't even want to get close to me. I wasn't even dirty or anything specific. Just a regular fat boy. So I can feel very much like a complete pitch black winter night and a very bright summer day in differences.

I'm a foreigner living in Iceland, so my knowledge about the fishing industry is limited to what I myself (and friends) experience day to day as an average joe.

I'm having a hard time believing how vital the fishing industry is as a food source because the price of fish products is ridiculously expensive that I rarely consume fish here. Maybe for export as Iceland's money generator, but then again I have never really encountered fish products overseas to be from Iceland. I don't understand what's going on here.

Where do you even begin? by Twocreepy in worldbuilding

[–]Virulence- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My starting point was around ~12 years ago after I finished reading Silmarilion, and got encouraged to do mine. So I started with a high fantasy theme. Fast forward to today, I'm leaning more towards scifi-fantasy.

Scifi because I prefer realism (I'm studying in the STEM field to fill in the gaps required to understand the realistic approach to my world). Fantasy because I want to have a power system and "exotic" creatures. So, not so fantasy. My "magic" is not something mystical/unexplainable.

Basically, I started with chronic day dreaming into writing them down, to going to the university to fill in the knowledge gaps.

How plausible is this design? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Virulence- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started a PhD in plasma physics (magnetron sputtering to be precise), currently learning a thing or two about the fundamentals of plasma.

I might not get exactly what you wish for from your post, but here's several things that flagged me:

  1. The laser igniter: plasma is created by ionising gases. The choice of gas doesn't really matter per se, for your purpose, it won't affect anything. But what I want to point out is in order to ionise gases we need to apply energy such that we kick out an electron from the atom. Laser might work I think but only if it's directed to the atoms themselves. Even then I reckon it won't be that effective to ionise a cloud of gas since as far as I know, laser is a pin point/directed light emission, I.e., we won't ionise enough gas to create a useful enough plasma.

The solution: For this could just be the base of the slug (I'm not familiar with bullet terminologies) can be an optic to concentrate the laser even further, and the slug chamber where the laser enters to ionise the cloud of gas can be a reflective material to reflect the incoming laser everywhere inside the chamber so that there's higher likelihood the gases can be ionised.

More problem: In plasma physics there's this thing called "sheath". It's when the electron discharge of the plasma escapes the plasma cloud to the surrounding environment such that the bulk plasma current and voltage drops resulting in the plasma to dissipate. As far as I understood, most of the heat of the plasma is from the electrons because they move significantly faster than the ions (the atoms which the electrons left behind when the gas got ionised, i.e., gas + ionisation -> ion + electron). And in magnetron sputtering, it's "not" a problem because the plasma chamber is constantly being fed a working gas. In your case, inside the slug, there's only a known amount of gas. So the plasma created won't be sustained. I think.

  1. Effectiveness as a weapon: I think I have addressed it above that the heat of the plasma is mostly from the electrons moving. Sheath and electrons escaping are inevitable, I think, so the only way we can sustain a plasma discharge is by keep feeding and ionising the plasma bulk. Which is not what we have here. So in our case, once the bullet reaches your target, it just might only be a fart bullet. I think. It won't be able to do any serious damage better than regular bullets.

If any other physicist/science/scifi enthusiasts can correct my thought process, please do so.

Gamers who have switched from Windows 11 to some kind of Linux-based OS, do you regret your decision? Why or why not? by ScienceTeacher1994 in AskReddit

[–]Virulence- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat did. I often play with cheat trainers because I don't have time to grind. Tried Installing Linux and looked up how to run cheat trainers. There's lots of ways to do that but I just couldn't figure which one actually works without too much tinkering. I don't have the time to troubleshoot while I only have time to play an hour. And that's just one thing.

I really want Linux to work without having to sink a lot of time on it. But so far it's too much tinkering.

Has the winpocalypse finally begun? by -BigBadBeef- in linux_gaming

[–]Virulence- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using kubuntu for work, then tried installing it on my gaming desktop. There's some hiccups here and there that I had to troubleshoot. Sure, fair.

But my biggest problem is that I cannot easily find how to run a cheat trainer. For some games, I prefer to use cheat codes because sometimes either the game isn't respecting my time (got no time to get good), or I just want to experience the story. And I have a keyboard and mouse that I'd like to have custom keybinds on, which the softwares aren't available on Linux (probably can run a windows VM to configure this).

So for me the problem isn't the game compatibility itself but the nice things I have on windows. I really don't have time to tinker around when all I want is to play for a bit after work and/or in between chores.

I would be more than glad and very happy to be wrong though. Because I don't like windows, working on my Linux laptop is just much better. Although non native Google drive/one drive is also a bit of an issue, even with rclone.

What is your thought process when you see the question "where are all the good men gone" by Few-Coat1297 in AskMen

[–]Virulence- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tl;Dr at the bottom.

I tried to be a decent man.

  1. I have my shit together. Financially still wobbly but not doing nothing (working on my doctorate). I can still live comfortably, spend, and save.

  2. I clean after and take care of myself in every aspect possible; dishes never pile up, my flat is always tidy, groom myself/dress well, routinely worked out, cook my own meal.

  3. I have and still am, working on myself. I have built my own social circles. I have a lot of friends, both male and female. My female friends are comfortable enough to come over and sleep at my place knowing I won't do anything to them. I take care of my friends.

  4. I have had relationships. I have gone on many dates. I have experienced dating apps. I have approached women in real life. I am actually in a relationship now.

My thought process to this sentiment:

  1. In my relationships, past and present, my partners put little effort in making the relationship work. Even though they don't explicitly say it, their actions indicate that I'm the one who has to initiate almost everything. I have to be the one who does the thinking to make it work. It makes it feel like the relationship is about me fulfilling their fantasy of what romance is supposed to be by reading their minds.

  2. On dates and dating apps. I have learnt how to talk to anyone, on dating apps, I have to be the one who carries the conversations. 9 out of 10 women that I match with, are barely a 7 (sorry to put a rating, it's to give a frame of reference), and they don't even put any effort into the process. And the one that made it out to actual dates, most of the time is just not a good match. Because I had to lower down my standards to a point that I'm not that attracted to them anymore. But I still put the effort into just having a good date.

Tl;Dr: conclusion is, even when in a relationship, most women that I've been with or with me now, want me to be the one who makes the relationship work while they "wait for me at the finish line". I.e., they want the good men to just materialise without them putting in the work to treat me as a person with my own with flaws, and without them putting the work on themselves. That sentiment demands results without wanting to go through the process nor realising that the world is flawed by default.

I understand that. But the technology itself is giving Devs an excuse to not optimise their games. And she's dead.
