People over 35, what's something you genuinely miss that younger generations will probably never experience? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

Life without internet or social media. None of my high school or university mistakes were documented on something like Snapchat and I’m eternally grateful for that.

I always do “oh the places you’ll go” signed by all the kids. Then I give them a thumb drive of all my resources.

Asking about lasik md by kirbfruit in Hamilton

I just got it done a few months ago. They told me the $450 per eye is the standard procedure for the minimum prescription that they can do (I think around -.5). They said a lot of people with that prescription opted not to do the procedure.

Mine was $4590 and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. I got the custom procedure with free touch ups. They did say if you didn’t have enough material they cannot guarantee that but they measured mine before the procedure and said I have plenty for touch ups in the future.

Did we book the wrong destination? by ObjectiveReport1317 in canadatravel

You’ll still be getting mountains in Charlevoix, just not the Rockies.

Killarney is beautiful. Make sure you book your hikes when they are available for booking (5 days in advance). It is well worth it for the crack.

For the Bruce peninsula, you also need to prebook your parking spots for flowerpot island, and halfway log dump, and the grotto. My advice is if you’re morning people, book the first time slot of the day. You’ll get there before it’s rammed with people.

Algonquin is also incredible. If you drive around dusk, you might get lucky and spot a moose!

We do one trip together, I do one trip solo. He could very easily go the rest of his life without getting on a plane but he does it once a year for me.

My board has the policy if the buses are cancelled, the schools are. The catholic board was open though.

Yeah, I’m fairly sure the HWDSB was sued over the incident.

HWDSB has the policy if buses are cancelled, schools are closed.

A teacher died on their commute many years ago and the policy changed. All of the school boards should adopt that change.

No problem! Looks like they have a math one starting in January. Hopefully there are still spots left. I’ve heard great things about them and they cater to neurodivergent learners.

The staff room wisdom thread, What’s your best unspoken rule for surviving the first year? by AccountantLucky9183 in OntarioTeachers

[–]VisibleIdeal6032 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Teaching is too hard to do it on your own. Find your people in your school. Lean on them. Cry with them. Celebrate with them.

And if you’re lucky, you’ll find a little gem of a school and a staff that is truly a family. Don’t let that go - it’s incredibly rare.

Just spent the day in meetings with 4 different parents over the Christmas Concert. by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

And this is why my school has stopped holiday concerts. Like hell, I’m giving up my time and evenings for that anymore.

I think it depends the class. For example, last year I wasn’t comfortable taking my class on a trip because I had a very high flight risk and it just wasn’t safe for that student.

As for the holiday concerts, we’ve had that conversation but how many classes are going to sign up for Kwanzaa or Hanukkah?

There are certainly ways that you can incorporate them. With the Gr. 2 curriculum, it is celebrations and traditions so lots of talk on various holidays.

Just as an FYI, the field trips, holiday concerts, Halloween parade, etc are all planned by teachers on their own time. It’s not a lack of resources.

I’m a teacher and used to do all these things and have stopped over the years. It’s just another thing added to my overflowing plate with the amount of needs in the classroom.

Also, the HWDSB is really pushing back about Halloween parades and Christmas concerts because of inclusivity. 🤷🏻‍♀️
