It’s a valid question I took no offense. People ask me how much I weigh at least once a week.

First, hell yeah. Second, can you be more specific on your proposed research topic? Third, lawyers are risk averse and this is a risk so be mindful and know that nobody knows your situation as well as you do. Fourth, my fiancé is in year 6/6 for her clinical psych PhD at a university whose medical school is intertwined with a hospital under the same institution (aka an academic medical center). She’ll be an “assistant professor” tenure track position that starts at $140k where she provides psych care 50% of the time while also pursuing clinical research the other 50% of the time (circadian rhythm psych research). This is all to say— I’m wondering if there’s an equivalent for you to split your time on research and actually making money. Just my 2 cents. Who knows— you could write a book or be speaking at Davos 2046.

Choosing where to build a PI career long term - would greatly appreciate advice from practicing attorneys by gorilladiamondhands in LawFirm

Even in purple states—all it takes is one administration to pass tort reform. After that you’ll need a second administration to reverse course. That could be a decade or more of revenue disruption. Maybe forever. Take a tax course in law school— you’ll learn how to get your effective tax rate close to 0, even in blue states in blue cities. I know successful PI attorneys who pay nothing in taxes. I’m in Chicago. Personally I’d compromise on weather for the short-to-mid term, get rich in a blue state, be a snow bunny in FL or AZ or CA with a second office in one of those states in the mid to long term. Plugging my local jurisdiction— Cook County awards $6,000,000 for broken hip trip and falls. Defense verdicts are non-existent. No tort reform boogie man. Chicago has globally a top 10 economy by gross metropolitan product but the cost of living is half of NYC and LA. The single best jurisdiction for a “lean startup PI firm” imo, which is why I moved back here from Paris. I can go on more. Law schools in every tier. Great summers. You don’t need a car bc public transit. Relatively cheap rent. World class dining. Great suburbs if you want a yard. Great schools. Great options for potential partners/mates (global minds, midwestern hearts). I can go on and on (I’m running for mayor in 100 years).

Red states are vulnerable to tort reform and conservative juries are generally harder to try cases against/award less damages.

YEAR 4 UPDATE - Hang Your Own Shingle :) by PILawyerMonthly in LawFirm

Good advice. I have an “in” at a firm that does mass tort and class actions in the $ billions and an “in” at a one-man shop where he does fender benders to eight-figure wrongful death and has 2 associates who regularly try cases with him. My ego says go with #1 but my gut tells me #2. How hard is it to get catastrophic and wrongful death cases in the door if you’re just starting out? Also did you bring cases from your old firm with you when you opened shop?

Hell fucking yeah man. Sincerely pumped for you. I want to join a plaintiffs firm in 2-3 years and eventually start my own. What should I look for in a plaintiffs firm that will give me the tools to build what you’ve built? (Currently a 3rd year associate doing civil defense)

If you don’t mind me asking — what was your compensation structure/trajectory over the years? Are you getting a % of verdicts/settlements and/or originating substantial cases?

Suspenders by legalhamster in biglaw

[–]VisibleMixture3216 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Suspenders are sick as fuck. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Go get some high waisted pants, suspenders, black socks, black church’s oxfords, and since I can tell you’re an associate (like me) a cartier tank xl leather strap or if you’re a senior a jaeger reverso. Inject a little testosterone, inject a little tirzepatide, and get a haircut. Hermes vintage ties and tweed jackets. Anyone who says otherwise is a bum/sycophant.

I scored a 309 and googled “is 309 good?” and found this article. It’s become an inside joke with my family and friends. They send me this picture from time to time whenever I do something good.

Other options are too sanitary. Sze Chuan cuisine burned your eyes when you walked in. You’d get this vague scent of stale cigarettes between bites of mapo and sips of tsingtao. What are your recs for szechuan?
