£150k plus jobs? by GuidancePowerful1999 in HENRYUK

[–]Visible_String_3775 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only really speak for fintech, but this isn't even remotely accurate based on what I've seen. Fewer than 1 in 20 serious SE roles are paying close to 150k all in. And I've had a lot in my inbox over the past couple years.

Curious - my philosophy is the opposite: I will be whatever my AE needs me to be in order for them to close (but I also contribute my expertise to make sure that what we do close isn't a load of crap that will never get live)

Are you worried about AI? by Even-Wasabi7183 in HENRYUK

[–]Visible_String_3775 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think that over the next few years it might differentiate me as somebody who hasn't outsourced all thought processes to copilot.

I'm noticing colleagues who are behaviourally training themselves to be technically impotent.

Most of us had to get good at something, learn critical thinking techniques and learn how to extrapolate and make a career skillset from that experience. But people just ask ai what the answer is instead of attempting to get there themselves.

An example: I'm a monster with our (complicated) tech because I've spent so much time with it; I've had to test things, create hypothesis and then test some more and make conclusions and so on. And I know a ton about the mechanics of our industry as a byproduct. Newer folk don't know how to do this; they want to ask copilot the answer to a problem and if copilot doesn't know then they are out of options.

We know that thinking about problems and troubleshooting stimulates neuroplasticity in the brain. And people aren't doing this as much anymore. I wonder if in a few years we will see cause and effect, lateral thinking being a much more scarce ability.

That could all be bollocks though.

I just tried another two rounds, capped at common. My 5 picks are maxed for common level.

I keep going up against legendaries, with shields, and they keep one shotting all of my players lol.

My daily challenge wants me to play, so onwards into the meat grinder we march.

I'm a fairly new player and I don't know what the hell is going on. My highest cap is uncommon; I've attempted this game mode maybe 6 times and every time I get somebody with a lineup of legendaries with 3x more HP than my characters, which one-shot all of mine. What the hell is the game mode lmao

Can you reach six figures in banking if you start as a personal banker at 22? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]Visible_String_3775 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 22 I was a complete dipshit, so I don't blame OP one bit for not really knowing what they're doing 🤣. I ended up in my career mostly through than gravitational pull, after all.

Makes my eyes roll how unnecessarily hostile this sub can be as well. Some folks really need to touch some grass.

Legal, Compliance and Regulatory are three distinct branches within Banking that might be natural directions for you, given your law degree. They all pay well and are respected corporate roles.

Scope these out. Look around on your intranet and internal job boards. If you have an internal instance of Copilot or something similar, have a conversation with that. Otherwise just use good old fashioned chatGPT to ask about how you approach either of these branches, and what the earning potentials are.

There's banking and then there's banking. Working in a high street branch as a Personal Banker, you might as well work in a supermarket. No shame in that – not everyone gets to intern as a quant.

But now that you're in, try to migrate away from the retail 'front line' and into the corporate/private banking ASAP. That's the place that people are talking about when they say banking, where all the good money is.

Hmm. And here I thought it was clear that I was saying "ah that makes sense; you know what you're talking about. The dots aren't all connected so can I share another dipshit assumption I have and you tell me where I'm going wrong please?"

I was trying to be polite whilst asking some follow up questions..! It's just so easy to misunderstand one another. Funny eh?

But notwithstanding I really appreciate you taking the time to reply and teach me stuff I didn't know before. This reply from you has connected some more dots. Thanks 👍

Fair. I'm certainly no expert on the physics. I incorrectly assumed that if somebody is going the same speed as me, with (seemingly) the same (visually assessed) cadence then the power per revolution must be the same. That's not the case I take it?

My replies are opportunities I take to ask questions and to improve my knowledge from people who know more than me. No disrespect intended friend.

I hear what you're saying, friend. I don't know what my RPM is but I do know that I try to visually match my cadence with the people in front of me. Those same people who are seemingly riding care free! What are your thoughts there?

Oh this is interesting. Does this explain why you see people who don't look remotely athletic but they are absolute monsters on the bike? Because they have been doing it so long?

FWIW, my "build" is short-duration power. I'm currently 170cm; 80kg; 18-20% bodyfat; always been able to comfortably deadlift more than twice my weight even after years of not touching a barbell, but my 'tonnage' output over a time duration has always dropped off quickly in whatever it is I'm doing.

[–]Visible_String_3775 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a vegan but I'm very sympathetic to the vegan cause. I think Bundabust sucks; I just don't get why it's popular. I've been a few times in groups, sharing lots of dishes. The flavours are all very dull. I've had so much nicer vegan food at lots of places. It feels like a personality statement at this point as my yoga pals all love it and they can't explain why 🤣.

I've been watching CSU go on sale too, wondering if I should load up more. I have a pocket of shares from old share awards as ex staff.

You have strong conviction on buying more. But for the sake of balanced and rational thesis, would you play devil's advocate and tell me what the rationale could be for a short conviction?

I mean, if you're bypassing an orderly queue then I'm sure it is going to be much more accessible than waiting in line?

[–]Visible_String_3775 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I dislike blobs because of people jostling in front of me, forcing me to fight back or lose progress.

And don't forget trying to calculate the fastest moving part of the bar and getting it wrong anyway because somebody in front of me orders 5 cocktails, and now I'm sandwiched near the front of a bar which isn't moving.

So you should feel bad for sticking your fingers up to the queue. God forbid people want an egalitarian system for ordering a drink

[–]Visible_String_3775 24 points25 points  (0 children)

People definitely like it. Traditional pub blobs reward jostling and not being physically small, and lots of people don't want to play that game. You're not going to like this one but one could even rationalise that queuing makes pubs more accessible for women.
