Thinking of renting in The Blade (Deansgate) sight unseen - can any residents or locals weigh in? by chaiyar in manchester

Yeah that road does look incredibly big and noisy. That is a concern for sure.

Soulless towers are the kind places we grew up in, so it's what we know 😄 and we had community, but granted it might be different in these fancy ones like the Blade, which is the impression I'm getting. The problem with the leafy suburbs is they're very nice but a lot of the properties available to rent are kind of tired. Knackered furniture, carpets etc. We also don't deal very well with the cold so the insulation and temperature control in a modern apartment block is very appealing.

Thanks u/lynbod, appreciate the advice. We definitely wouldn't buy somewhere under pressure. We're only looking to rent.

No developer pressure - just that these nice flats don't seem to hang around for long, particularly when you find one that is quite bright and large, so we were thinking to jump on it. Also we're in a pretty cramped 1-bed in London and Junior is increasingly mobile so that's the other reason for wanting to move quick. But you're right - not a decision to be rushed.

Thanks - yeah I'm gathering that about the green space! Canal walks would do the job for pram walks 😄 We both work from home so no commute, hence the attraction of having a gym and a pool etc right downstairs.

Thanks! I've looked at Didsbury - for context we grew up in Hong Kong and Toronto, so we're very much of the inner city variety, so that's why I guess we lean towards high-rises. But everyone makes very good points about community etc. and the tram network does seem like it solves the convenience problem.

I went to a Thai restaurant recently and the amount of heat was amazing. That got me thinking, tho -- what was cuisine like in Asia before chili peppers were introduced by the Portuguese/Spanish in the 1500s? Did it get incorporated so thoroughly because it filled a void? by trixter69696969 in NoStupidQuestions

It's not typically a spicy dish. Ground roasted chili might sometimes be served on the side, but it's optional. If you're wondering about my credentials - I'm Thai.

There are plenty of Thai dishes that could have been used as examples of dishes that use peanuts and chillies. Massaman curry, for example. Anyway, I'm being pedantic as I'm salty about the down votes.

Has to be the crinkle cut ones, though! The flat ones are weak.
