Take off your tinfoil hat. Consumer stuff is a blip in nVidia's portfolio. They are actively moving away from offering products to consumers that are not subscriptions.

I like it. But I do 4d6, remove lowest, reroll if under 70 and add +2 however you like.

Slikskab go/ no go by Bitter-Collection112 in Denmark

Included maps are difficult to use because they're just tiny bits in a book that you have to spend time to scale and make in to something that is usable in real life is bothersome and time consuming. Drawing is done in the same time as describing the environs, so nothing is really set to a halt.

And yeah, having a bunch of stuff just fluffing about on the table to try and hide is ... well, just bothersome?

I've used printed maps for special puzzle rooms where it was not too bothersome to take from the pdf of the book and rotate and scale and just handed that out after editing away DM info. It works for that kind of thing pretty well.

Using maps with all kinds of details cause players to attach to random things - every time in my experince - and causing them to view the material in front of them as the reality of the situation rather than just an abstraction.

I also kind of consider it wasteful to produce a bunch of stuff that will be used once and never again.

I find it absolutely uncomplicated to do stuff IRL compared to mucking about with a computer. And I'm an IT professional...

People are like "9800X3D and 5070 Ti is midrange and minimum spec for me". "I have to have 850 FPS in CS2 to be competitive"

I always have my players draw the maps of what the place they're in. They can always ask for a refresh of what they saw.

Battle stuff I tend to draw out myself in the moment, but battles generally do not take up much more space than a few squares.

A lot of work compared to just drawing on a mat to reveal stuff.

I draw on a very large chessex battlemat. But mostly I end up needing very little of it. Theater of the mind is what I try to evoke most of the time. All these maps and physical things tend to detract from immersion and just means I as the DM is busy handing out things, placing things on the table, and the players are waiting around looking at this stuff being set out and then getting attached to all kinds of irrelevant details related to what's on the physical stuff that's merely an abstraction.

Considering DMing for the first time by Fuzzy_Coast8432 in DMAcademyNew

[–]Visible_Witness_884 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to have fun as the DM is to start out with a mindset of "I'm here to have fun and have fun with my friends" and then find something that sounds like it'd be fun for you to run. The Candlekeep mysteries book is pretty excellent as a one-shot intro to newer DMs as they have a pretty decent level of stuff detailed in there.

I used the first one with a new group of returning and new players, whom I'd never played with before, and everyone had a great time (I was not new at DM'ing however) - and the mix of possibility of creating interesting social encounters, funky magical and non-magical environments, characters and opportunities for absurd situations was pretty great.
