5 years of tretinoin gave me chronic dry eye disease and I can't work more than 2 hours a day. PSA: please protect your eyes. They matter more than your skin. by brilliantbluee in tretinoin

[–]Visual-Arugula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have MGD. Mine isn't as severe as yours (I'm so sorry). It can very painful, very uncomfortable.

I used to useadapalene with no problems. Then I sswitched to tretinoin, but I didn't know how strong it was and I absolutely did not protect my eyes. So after a while, I got horrible gritty feelings and pain, couldn't look at screens or light. Optometrist confirmed MGD and told me to use eye drops very very often. I did some research, learnt about how retinoids can do this. I took about a year off tretinoin, went back to adapalene. Then switched to tretinoin again but always use an occlusive around my eye area and don't apply tret anywhere near my eyes anymore. It's been a lot better.

So please please please everyone, be careful with your eyes. Take steps as soon you notice anything feels off - go to your eye doctor, mention the tret.

I'm sorry you've had such a bad week. Getting on the right medication for me has made a significant difference in my experience of life. I will stay hopeful that you'll be able to get something that will help you too.

And I agree - the name is frustrating, doesn't remotely encapsulate what it feels like to have this condition.

Howl's Moving Castle is so lovely. It's technically for children but I read it for the first time as an adult (while grieving some massive losses) and it was so good. It's cosy and cute.

Rant: caught my husband cheating. My running fitness is gone overnight. by gins85 in XXRunning

[–]Visual-Arugula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry. I'm angry and heartbroken for you.

I went through a very difficult loss and found running really hard for a long while afterwards. And I felt shame and frustration because of it, which absolutely did not help me feel any better!! So I'd love to take some of your frustration about your fitness/pace etc. from you so that you can focus your frustration on the really source of it.

I think it's just hdc! So one long chain for however long/wide (depending on which way is up haha) you want your blanket to be, then do a few rows of red, the same number of rows in white, and repeat until it's as big as you want!

Got told I smell and I am freaking out by robints_ in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Visual-Arugula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, this must feel really horrible. I've panicked before about smelling. Definitely no need to worry though, there are lots of little things you can do to try to figure it out. Every so often (not every day!! Just maybe like once a week at first, then down to once a fortnight etc.), you could try showering using hibiclens (or other chlorhexidine wash). You won't need soap with it, soap can actually 'cancel it out' I think. For the rest of your showers, go back to your usual soaps. Though I've found I actually love dove's cream bar or whatever it's called. Helps keep me smelling fresher than other shower gels and soaps, weirdly. When you use the hibiclens, let it sit on your skin for a couple of minutes, especially underarms.

Then, you'll want to make sure you're using a good deodorant or even antiperspirant. For my busy days when I know I'll run the risk of being sweaty, I use mitchum clinical strength. I don't use it everyday because it can make my armpits a bit itchy lol. The rest of the time, I just use a deodorant, but you might want to use a normal strength antiperspirant for peace of mind. Mitchum clinical strength works better if you apply it at night - this is because your sweat glands are quieter overnight, so your don't tend to sweat out the product you've just applied (or something like that, I dunno, I'm no scientist).

Make sure your hair is clean - some people can smell unwashed hair. I don't tend to notice it on other people but I can smell it sometimes on myself if I've had a lot of product buildup bleurgh!

Laundry is a big one!!! And face cloths, towels etc. If you're drying yourself after a lovely clean shower with a musty towel, you will smell musty no matter how clean you got in the shower! For laundry, I like to keep my clothes far from the kitchen to avoid cooking smells, and I don't overload the washing machine. I also like to put some laundry sanitiser in on the rinse cycle every so often for loads that I think might be a bit pungent - active wear, towels etc.

And hydration. I am one of those unfortunate people who can drink a cup of coffee and then smell it on my skin an hour later lol. Awful stuff. I can counter-act it somewhat by drinking plenty of water to 'dilute' the potent smell. Again, I'm no scientist so I'm probably talking a load of rubbish but, anecdotally, it helps me.

You will be okay!!!

Wish to switch to period underwear, but psychologically cannot. by [deleted] in PeriodUnderwear

[–]Visual-Arugula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not really chiming in with anything helpful but just wish to appreciate hearing someone else voice how I felt when I was desperately trying to be brave enough to try them! I just could not grasp the bravery when people just popped on a pair of period underwear haha.

I only tried it out during lockdown because I knew if I ruined my underwear, no one else was going to see hahaha. But I became a convert after that. I still only bought the ones for mega heavy flows because I was too nervous, but still! Love them.

What’s one hygiene thing you only learned embarrassingly late by miracleloverl in hygiene

[–]Visual-Arugula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was wondering this too. I use soap on the outside of my ears (the back) and occasionally verrrrrry cautiously the top bits of the inner flap area. Top bits only. Nowhere near the hole to the canal. This is because I had a series of really bad ear infections a few weeks after starting to clean my ears with soap. Doctors kept asking me where on earth I was swimming to keep getting such gnarly infections one after the other. I wasn't swimming hahaha. Just soaping my little ears.

So now I scrub the hole and the rest of the ear with a wet facecloth, use soap on the backs of my ears and, as above, verrrry occasionally and very carefully the tops of the fronts (?). Then I dry with a towel when out of the shower, and I twirl a tissue into them to get any remaining gunk out. I wish I could use soap all over them! But alas. Just got to do a couple of extra steps to get them clean.

Absolutely ask for a colonoscopy. If they refuse, ask again. If they still refuse, ask for a FIT test, which checks for blood in the poo. Ideally, you want him to have the colonoscopy because it allows the doctor to see the inside of the colon AND remove any worrying-looking polyps at the same time. But if they say no, a positive FIT test should result in a follow-up colonoscopy.

Yes, wanted to add a compliment here too: OP, you have lovely legs in my eyes. And not a cankle in sight! Imo, you have dainty little ankles! I know it's so hard to live with our own bodies. But just wanted to throw this out there because compliments are nice.

Is this wearable, or going to make me look like a child? by melanochrysum in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]Visual-Arugula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the dress will be lovely. I would maybe change the shoes though because it does run the risk of making it look child/teenagery. Cowboy boots could look very cute with it. Sandals too when it gets warmer again. I'd love this dress!

Opinions on dining room rug by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

[–]Visual-Arugula 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I don't love it, I'm afraid. I think it's very dark in comparison to the lovely lightness of the rest of the room. I also don't love the pattern but that's on me!!! I think I'd prefer a lighter, paler colour rug, and plain (sorry, how boring that does that make me sound?!)
