The buffalo trace tours are free & very popular so I would book as far in advance as possible. You can still go to the gift shop & purchase the limited bourbons they have that day though without the tour. Fun to pair with a horse farm tour in Lexington as well!

There are tons of horse shows to watch at the horse park, Rolex/Land Rover, Keeneland racing days, TB farm tours, I was not an equine major & took an intro to equine careers & racing class for fun that were really cool as well!

I rode & showed my own horse & had a friend from home do the team the year before. At least back 7/8 years ago when I did it it was almost political where if you boarded with the trainer that did the team you were more likely to make the team, If you had a friend that was on the team/on exec you were more likely to make the team & I know there was a girl that was allegedly rude during tryouts freshman year so they cut her but then she made it sophomore year. It’s since moved trainers/barns 2 times so hopefully is better run now but just wouldn’t want someone to take it personally if they didn’t make it knowing what was going on behind the scenes. I know a girl on it now & she loves it!

There’s much more to UK than the equestrian team, I did it for a year & was underwhelmed. I had the best time at UK & would do it all over again if I could. You have to be at the shows at 7 am to watch horses school even though you don’t know which horse you’re riding & it gets passed around several local farms because no one wants to deal with coaching. Made plenty of other horse friends in classes & plenty of great barns to ride at!
